When Mathieu Béjot starting work on this year’s edition of Sunny Doc of the Doc – a La Rochelle-based marketplace for documentary and factual content that runs from June 22-25 – his guiding principle was continuity.
Stepping into a role closely associated with doc world veteran Yves Jeanneau – who co-founded Sunny Side in 1989 and oversaw it until his passing in November 2019 – Béjot intended, above all else, to make the June event feel of a piece with the thirty versions that preceded it. Only, things did not exactly go as planned.
“Obviously, our plans changed mid-March,” says Béjot, who served as executive director of TV France International from 2000 to 2018 and joined Sunny Side with the newly created title of Director of Strategy and Development.
“Moving online forced us to rethink [our programing and the way we presented it]. We had to become more hands-on in assuring concrete takeaways for our participants, because we know that time is of a premium.

History-focused 28th edition of documentary and factual content event runs June 19-22 in La Rochelle.
Upcoming documentaries exploring the life of Mikhail Gorbachev, the space race and Jackie Kennedy’s anti-segregationist work will be among the projects being presented at this year’s Sunny Side of the Doc (Ssd) this year.
The 28th edition of the documentary and factual content market and conference, running June 19-22 on the historic docks of the picturesque French port town of La Rochelle, is putting the onus on history this year.
The focus is in keeping with Ssd’s four-year cycle alternating the annual theme between history, science, human interest and wildlife. But the fact the history theme falls this year is also timely, comments founding director Yves Jeanneau.
“The phrase ‘reinventing history’ sums up what’s going on at the moment. We’re witnessing a renewal and rejuvenation in the way history is being told, both in terms...

PARIS -- The organizers of Sunny Side of the Doc on Wednesday unveiled the lineup for the international documentary market's 15th edition, promising a "bigger and better" market over four days instead of the usual three. The market runs June 19-22 in Marseilles, France. More than 325 exhibitors have signed up, compared with a year-earlier 235, along with an expected 300 buyers and commissioning editors, organizers said. The market will welcome an official Chinese delegation for the first time, as well as representatives from 150 European companies and delegates from the United States, Canada and Brazil. Yves Jeanneau, a documentary film producer who co-founded the market in 1990 along with now-deceased director Olivier Masson, stressed that despite its burgeoning size, the market will retain its unique niche as an event that demystified the increasingly complex documentary genre.

PARIS -- International documentary market Sunny Side of the Doc is anticipating an overall upswing of more than 20% for its 14th edition, which runs June 25-28 in the southern French port city of Marseilles. "Nobody today can finance their own documentaries. (A smaller market) is a necessity," said the market's general commissioner, Yves Jeanneau, on Monday, who cited the success of Etre et Avoir (To Be and to Have) and Bowling for Columbine for part of this year's growth. More than 285 exhibitors have signed up for this year's market, up from last year's 237, along with an expected 230 buyers and commissioning editors -- both figures keeping up with the 20% growth.
