There's no more maligned comedy format than short-form improv. It falls somewhere below clowning on the respectability scale, inducing instant eye rolls from comedy geeks and making long-form improvisers shudder with disdain. It's fine; I get it — no one treasures super-schlocky one-liners. But when it's done well, short form is the quickest path between silence and laughter, and the return of Whose Line Is It Anyway? demonstrates once again how funny and joyous — and rare — spontaneity is on television.Whose Line got its start in the U.K., and the American version aired on ABC from 1998 to 2007. (It remained popular in reruns on ABC Family through 2011.) Now the CW is reviving the series, swapping in Aisha Tyler for Drew Carey as host but keeping the rest of the show basically intact: Colin Mochrie, Ryan Styles, and Wayne Brady are all back, as is musician Laura Hall. "You'll never guess what's been happening in triage. Apparently everyone’s a lesbian!" — Shortland Street Receptionist, 2011
There’s this thing that happens at my house on week nights when my housemate Sarah comes home from work.
Sarah: Oh it’s 6:30, Neighbours is on!
Me: Ergh, Neighbours. Back in New Zealand, where everything is awesome, Shortland Street is way cooler and better in every way than Neighbours.
Sarah: Shh, it’s starting!
[Silence for approximately 45 seconds.]
Me: Pfft, you call that drama? This one time, on Shortland Street, Donna and Rangi continued to have an affair even after they found out they were half-brother and sister; it was amazing! Oh, or this other time, a truck crashed into the hospital...

No matter what else I may ever see him in, I will never be able to look at Wayne Brady and see anyone other than the man in the Dave Chappelle skit who sells drugs, runs a prostitution ring, and then defiantly screams, “I’m Wayne Brady, bitch” after shooting Dave Chappelle in the legs. That persona was, of course, a semi-retaliation against his reputation as a family friendly inoffensive black comedian, a reputation that he largely got by working on this show. Now, it seems that the entire show is trying to expand beyond its ‘family-friendly’ reputation with the release of this ‘uncensored’ DVD set, which collects ten episodes of the original series featuring material not included in the original broadcast.
