A lonely motel receptionist, Gulab (Vikram Singh), makes an extra buck by selling the hidden-cam videos of his unsuspecting guests on the internet. But when one such guest turns out to be a young girl named Saloni (Ayushi Nema) who is being trafficked by Bhupesh (Dev Chauhan), he faces a crisis of conscience.
Overall, there’s quite a lot to like with “Incognito.” The central setup employed here, with the sleazy motel owner who secretly records the goings-on in the rooms of the facility and uploads the content online, is a rather cliche one. However, that allows for an effective quick-shot character-build that gets the point of who he is across easily and moves this along. That also allows for an enjoyable unraveling of the trafficking storyline to get drawn out with the discovery of the operation taking place. As the videos slowly begin to point him toward the...

Leena Yadav: 'I definitely didn’t want to make a dark, depressing film about it because I don’t think life is like that and these women that I met were not like that. They celebrated life'
Leena Yadav: 'I’m hoping by the end of the film, people acknowledge that it’s happening in their backyards across the world.' Photo: Courtesy of Wolfe Video Indian director Leena Yadav’s Parched is a film that firmly passes the Bechdel Test, boasting not just one central female character but four – across two generations. While much of the lives of Rani (Tannishtha Chatterjee), Bijli (Surveen Chawla), Lajjo and Janaki (Lehar Khan) is dictated by the men in their life, particularly Rani, whose son Gulab (Riddhi Sen) is a picture of frustrated youth, they are very much their own women and looking to shape their lives.

Director Leena Yadav’s film Parched, which is produced by Ajay Devgn, had its world premiere recently at The Toronto International Film Festival where it got brilliant reviews, standing ovations and sold-out screenings.
At one of the screenings, Leena had a shocking but very pleasant surprise. The screening was so packed that the director herself struggled to get a ticket! The director recalls that in one of the later screenings of the film, post the premiere in the Special Presentation Section, the team assumed that they would not have a full house since it was the last day of the festival and so none of them booked advance tickets. But much to their surprise they found out that the show was a sold-out. Leena says, “We even visited the theatre telling them that we were the crew, but we were told that the only way was to join the rush...

Finding true empowerment is an uphill battle in Leena Yadav’s Parched, which takes audiences on a harrowing journey towards freedom as her four protagonists break their chains of oppression.
We meet Rani (Tannishtha Chatterjee) a widow and former child-bride, is now marrying off her 17-year old son Gulab (Riddhi Sen) to Janaki (Lehar Khan), who is 15. When Janaki appears with shorn hair, and brings shame to her family, Rani soon enacts the same harsh treatment she received from her mother-in-law with Janaki. Rani is heartbroken when Gulab rejects Janaki, preferring to hang out with his friends and chase prostitutes in the city. There’s also Rani’s best friend Lajjo (Radhika Apte), a fun and raucous presence, who is unable to have a child, and routinely beaten by her violent husband. Rounding out the trio is their friend, Bijli (Surveen Chawla) a dancer in a traveling sideshow, disparaged for...
