A country home holds hellish horrors for the Harcourt family in Peter James' new book, The House on Cold Hill. To celebrate the novel's recent release from Pan Macmillan, we've been provided with an exclusive excerpt that teases a glimpse of something supernatural... and potentially sinister.
The House on Cold Hill synopsis: "Moving to the countryside is a big undertaking for born townies Ollie and Caro Harcourt and their 12-year-old daughter, Jade. But when they view Cold Hill House—a huge, dilapidated, Georgian mansion—they are filled with excitement. Despite the financial strain of the move, Ollie has dreamed of living in the country since he was a child. Caro is less certain, and Jade is grumpy about being removed from all her friends. But within days of moving in, it becomes apparent that they aren't the house's only residents. At first a friend of Jade, talking to her...

Downton Abbey became a worldwide television hit before I even had some basic grasp on the thing, so, of course, you know how these things work: the show gets big, a lead in said show does a few movies, and they eventually break away from their launching point to pursue a career in the better medium. It’s probably too early to say if that will happen with Hugh Bonneville, but a film is in his future.
As ScreenDaily (via ThePlaylist) reports, the actor will take to the big screen to lead Dead Simple, an adaptation of Peter James‘ crime novel that Daniel Eckhart will script. The story, as described by ScreenDaily, is a “race-against-time thriller about a bridegroom buried alive after a stag night prank goes wrong[;] Roy Grace must find this living coffin while coping with the mysterious disappearance of his wife.”

[1] Whether the world really needs another Romeo and Juliet adaptation is up for debate, but Carlos Carlei's upcoming film boasts some intriguing talent, at least. The script comes from Gosford Park and Downton Abbey writer Julian Fellowes, while young up-and-comers like Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Ed Westwick, and Kodi Smit-McPhee are lined up to star. The latest addition to the project is the always welcome Paul Giamatti, who's set to play Friar Laurence. A confidant to both Romeo and Juliet, the character plays a key role in the star-crossed lovers' fates. Shooting on the film, which is rather discouragingly being described as "Romeo and Juliet for the Twilight generation," is slated to begin this month in Italy. [Variety [2]] After the jump, Dr. John Watson and the Earl of Grantham book big-screen gigs. Martin Freeman, Noel Clarke, and Tim Curry will lend their vocal talents to Saving Santa, an animated film about a clumsy,...

Before we get started with today’s news, I have to confess that I’ve never seen Downton Abbey. In fact, like most ignorant Americans, I thought it was “Downtown Abbey” until the Golden Globes show a few weeks back. That being said, here’s some news that will certainly make sense to fans of the show. Hugh Bonneville is the latest actor (following in the footsteps of Jessica Brown-Findlay, amongst others) to parlay the British drama’s success into paying big screen work. IndieWire says Bonneville has been tapped to play the lead role in the upcoming adaptation of Peter James’ bestselling novel Dead Simple. Television’s Earl of Grantham will play detective Roy Grace in the film – which finds the sleuth searching for a groom...

Hugh Bonneville, better known as Downton Abbey’s Earl of Grantham, has just landed a rare leading man role in a big screen movie. Screen Daily reports that Bonneville will play detective Roy Grace in Dead Simple, an adaptation of one of Peter James‘ crime books based on the popular Brighton-based hero.
The ticking clock thriller finds Grace investigating four gruesome murders linked to a groom who has been buried alive somewhere on the eve of his wedding day. It’s the fifth book in the Grace series but one that could potentially kick-start a franchise about the quirky detective who is solving murders whilst trying to overcome the pain of losing his wife.
James has become a huge best-selling author in the UK where he is outselling Jeffrey Deaver and James Patterson right now, but he has a background in film after working as a film producer and financier...
