Jennifer Ginsberg: Amy Locane, the former "Melrose Place" actress who also starred in "Cry-Baby" and "School Ties," has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and third-degree assault by auto after an alleged drunk-driving crash Sunday night in Hopewell, New Jersey, where she lives with her husband and two young daughters (Paige, 3, and Avery, 1).
Prior to the deadly 9:00 Pm crash, Locane was reportedly involved in a hit-and-run at a nearby intersection. She allegedly rear-ended a car, then drove off in her SUV, knocking down several mailboxes. As a couple was turning into their driveway, Locane struck their vehicle, killing noted art historian Helene Seeman. (Seeman's youngest son, Curtis, 17, was with her when she died.) Seeman's husband Fred, 60, is hospitalized in serious condition.
After the fatal crash, Locane admitted to police that she had had several glasses of wine prior to driving, according to court papers. (Her husband owns a...

Jennifer Ginsberg: I admit it: I am a huge fan of "The Real Housewives of New York City."
While I love the entire "Real Housewives" series, the New York City one is my favorite because I lived in Manhattan and it holds a special place in my heart. I find the women of the show to be an intoxicating combination of vapid and intriguing, which makes for incredible reality television! Also, being a Jewish woman, I am happy to watch successful Jewish women on the show.
Jill Zarin recently coauthored the book "Secrets of a Jewish Mother," and I was thrilled to see a famous woman not only acknowledging, but embracing, her Judaism. I also assumed that Bethenny Frankel was proudly Jewish, but when I recently watched her on the "Real Housewives" after-show hosted by Andy Cohen, I was confused by how she responded to a viewer question. Andy...

Having finally emerged from a winter that made my hometown of Pittsburgh resemble a scene from the film Doctor Zhivago, I'm not inclined to put Al Gore's dire warnings about global warming at the top of my worry list. As Los Angeles writer Jennifer Ginsberg puts it, with Iran on its way to acquiring nuclear weapons, are plastic bags actually the gravest threat to our way of life? And yet, assuming there is a long run, we don't want the free world overrun with landfills, do we? Hence this post about a TV pilot that has made me a little less inclined to roll my eyes each time I sort through my trash, attempting to penetrate New York City's Byzantine recycling rules. The pilot, "Life Without Green," billed by its producers as "an environmental television drama," chronicles the efforts of a young...

Sobriety is easily attainable for most people -- without them having to shell out a fortune.
Jennifer Ginsberg: Brooke Mueller has left her treatment center and returned home with a staff of coaches, therapists and other treatment professionals to help her achieve sobriety. Her rep says she is "aggressively continuing her recovery while spending time with her children at home." It's likely that she made this choice because she wanted to be home with her twin babies, since her husband, Charlie Sheen, has recently entered treatment as well.
High-profile cases like Brooke's -- in which alcoholic celebrities enter pricey treatment centers and enlist a posse of professionals to help them on their path -- might make sobriety seem elusive and daunting to a mom who doesn't have celebrity-style resources. Yes, inpatient treatment can be beneficial, especially for someone who's trapped in the vicious circle of alcoholism and addiction. Total...

Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller, parents of infant twins, are both in rehab. An addiction specialist says this is a positive step.
Jennifer Ginsberg: Charlie Sheen has entered an addiction treatment facility, following speculation he was drinking again. "As a preventative measure, Charlie Sheen has entered a rehabilitation facility. He will take some time off his series 'Two and a Half Men,'" Sheen's representative said in a statement. Sheen's wife, Brooke Mueller, is also in rehab, where she can be visited by the couple's 11-month-old twins who are reportedly under the care of a nanny, Charlie's parents, and Brooke's mother.
The fact that both Brooke and Charlie have taken the steps to both admit they have a problem and seek help for their addictions speaks highly to the future of their relationship and their children.
One of the biggest concerns when an addict enters treatment is that once they are discharged,...

Who is a feminist?
Heather Robinson and Jennifer Ginsberg: We've been asking that question since reading "Going Rogue," Sarah Palin's autobiography, and after reading columns by prominent feminists deriding the idea that the former Governor of Alaska is a feminist.
Many of these columnists do not clearly explain why they believe Palin is not a feminist. But they suggest that her bid for vice president was a slap in the face to women. Their writing is filled with personal digs, referring to Palin, for example, as a "moose-killing former governor and mother of five," and "Caribou Barbie."
When we posed this question to a friend, the reaction was scorn. "Palin is a pathological liar!" she exclaimed with disgust.
"Based on what?" There was no response. We can only assume this was a conclusion drawn from a left-wing media source.
Another friend responded, "She's absolutely not a feminist. She...

What is the psychological fate of little Ava-Monroe?
Ronda Kaysen: Casey Johnson might have been a billionaire heiress, but she reportedly died alone in a filthy, rat-infested apartment with her 3-year-old daughter in her parents' custody. The death of Casey Johnson is not only a story of a spoiled rich girl gone wild, but also a cautionary tale of just how much havoc addiction can wreak on a family and the children left behind.
Casey's end -- she presumably died of a drug overdose complicated by diabetes, her body not found for a week -- is tragic in its own right. Add her adopted daughter Ava-Monroe to the equation and you have a sad story of a little girl orphaned not once, but twice.
"It's really tragic. [Ava's] psychological development and wellness will really depend on how she is cared for," says momlogic expert and New York City psychiatrist Dr. Janet Taylor.

Focusing only on Polanski seems hypocritical in a society that celebrates and exploits teen sexuality.
Jennifer Ginsberg: In the aftermath of child rapist Roman Polanski being taken into custody after trying to enter Switzerland on Saturday, questions about culpability, morality, and teen sexuality have arisen. The Academy Award-winning director pled guilty in 1977 to a single count of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, acknowledging he had sex with a 13-year-old girl, but fled the United States before he could be sentenced. It is alleged that in addition to raping the child, he also drugged and sodomized her after her mother dropped her off at Jack Nicholson's home for a supposed photo shoot with Polanski.
While I wholeheartedly believe that Polanski should be held 100% responsible for his egregious crime, I also feel that only focusing disproportionately on him seems hypocritical in a society that all too often celebrates and exploits teen sexuality.
