Brad Anderson's rollercoaster ride is a lean, taut, brilliant B-movie
The Call is a welcome little late summer treat, a juiced-up B-movie kidnap thriller from regular Fringe director Brad Anderson, admirably succinct at 87 minutes, constructed around the conversations between an abducted girl (Abigail Breslin) and the responder (Halle Berry), who picks up when the girl calls 911 from the trunk of the kidnapper's car. It's a machine designed to thrill, please and satisfy; a one-sentence pitch – 911 responder breaks rule No 1, and gets emotionally involved – deftly realised, manipulative and clever enough to be irresistible. Add an ending that's midnight-black, morally, yet somehow just right, and it's the kind of throwaway thriller that could only be improved by seeing it in a nighttime drive-in with a date, some reefer and a fifth of Old Harper. Pure guilty pleasure.
The set-up is simple. Six months earlier, Berry botches a 911 call – promises her first abductee she'll get her home,...

Melbourne, Apr 19: Australian doctors have agreed that less is more when it comes to cosmetic procedures - to avoid patients looking "like aliens".
World-renowned plastic surgeon Dr Arthur Swift has suggested that doctors, who give in to patient demands and overdo procedures, are creating unnatural appearances, News.com.au reported.
Australian College of Cosmetic Surgery spokesman Dr John Flynn said that managing patient expectations was a concern.
Flynn said that some patients do demand more and more and it's incumbent on ethical and well-trained doctors to resist demands for procedures, which achieve outrageous results.
He said that the concept they would be looking at is achieving a result where the patient.

He added, “Print will be with us for many, many years”, but we must also provide our readers with the greatest news experience possible on other platforms”. The address was intended as a morale booster for News Ltd.’s journalists after a sweeping restructure by chief executive Kim Williams, which resulted in an estimated 300 layoffs. – Don Groves ‘Strong Medicine’ To Get Reality Treatment In Holland Dutch broadcaster Sbs has commissioned a local reality version of Lifetime drama Strong Medicine. HollywoodNews.com: The newest cast member of ‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ is just like many of the ‘Housewives’ women as she is reportedly being sued for fraud.
Dana Wilkey and her fiance, John Flynn, are reportedly being accused of defrauding an investor out of $53,000, states TMZ. Mary Painter claims the two and another man promised her a 10% return on her investment back in 2008.
Painter reportedly claims she has tried to get her money back over the years, but has had no luck. She is now suing for breach of contract and fraudulent misrepresentation.
Flynn has commented that there is no fraud going on here and that Wilkey should not be named in the lawsuit.

Rotten is the S'mores of zombie comics. The Rocky Road of westerns. Meaning; it combines 3 of my favorite things into one delicious package. Namely; zombies, westerns, and a tough as railroad-spikes hero. It's horror with history. The Walking Dead in the old west. Romero-Eastwood. A top notch zombie comic. Not as good as Wd, but so far it's a cut above the rest. Grade A undead meat ripe for mass-consumption while you wait for the main course...

New York - "Comcast's acquisition of NBC Universal is a transaction like no other that has come before this Commission - ever…And it confers too much power in one company's hands."
That is how FCC commissioner Michael Copps explained why he was the lone dissenter Tuesday in the regulatory agency's approval of the Comcast-nbc Universal deal.
"It reaches into virtually every corner of our media and digital landscapes and will affect every citizen in the land," Copps also wrote.
He summarized his biggest concerns like this: "The Comcast-nbcu joint venture opens the door to the cable-ization of the open Internet. The potential for walled gardens, toll booths, content prioritization, access fees to reach end users and a stake in the heart of independent content production is now very real."
The Justice Department, which had signed off on the deal in an antitrust review, is expected to announce its own...

Alive Entertainment chief Philip von Alvensleben and former Columbia TriStar vp James Veres have optioned "Noble Soul," a screenplay by Joe Wallenstein, a producer and USC film school administrator.
"Soul" is a fact-based legal drama probing the Supreme Court's landmark 1966 Miranda case on criminal-arrest procedure. Wallenstein based his script on accounts passed on by his friend John Flynn, the attorney who successfully pleaded the case.
"In some quarters, Miranda was and remains a deeply unpopular decision," Wallenstein said. "However, it is crucial that all Americans remember that at no time is their liberty more precious than when it is unpopular."
A TV multihyphenate on such series as "Knots Landing" and "7th Heaven," Wallenstein is director of physical production at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. He is repped by Roger Strull at Preferred Artists and Dionell Guanco at Avery Management.
Financial terms of the "Noble" deal weren't disclosed.
