"Casi Divas" (translated: "Almost Divas") hit Mexican theaters in April and now it's coming here to the United States on August 21 in a limited release. The story follows four women, all of them from different parts of Mexico, who are in competition to star in the next movie from Alejandro Mateos (Julio Bracho), the country's most powerful producer. The foursome form a tight friendship as Eva Gallardo (Patricia Llaca), a bonafide diva, schemes to win the part for herself.

In Mexico, it opened at number one at the boxoffice and was among the top five grossing films of 2008.

Director Issa Lopez (Efectos Secundarios) will helm Casi Divas (Road to Fame) for Columbia Pictures Producciones Mexico, the local production arm of Sony Pictures Entertainment. The film, which stars Patricia Llaca, Julio Bracho, Maya Zapata, Ana Layevska, Diana Garcia and Daniela Schmidt, will be produced by Luz Maria Rojas (Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Mask of Zorro). Divas, which is based on an idea and story by SPRI executive vp creative advertising Ignacio Darnaude, marks the fledgling production division's second feature. The first was the acquisition El Crimen Del Padre Amaro, which became the biggest Mexican film of all time.
