We first came to Lahaina during Covid because my son, Greyson, who was 5 at the time, was losing his mind. He’s a very active boy, and we needed to get him out of the house. My dad, musician Ray Conniff, had a lot of close ties to Hawaii and the community here. He’d spent a lot of time in Lahaina and even recorded a Hawaii LP [1967’s Ray Conniff’s Hawaiian Album]. So we moved here for a couple of months during quarantine, spending time with our friends, Stephen Stills’ son Chris and his wife, Stacy, and their family. My son met a local surf instructor, Uncle Bully, who is an amazing human. He teaches kids, especially locals, to surf and respect the ocean. He became a family friend and taught Greyson how to surf. He’s now 8 and a competitive surfer. The water is his happy place.

Bryce Dessner of the National unveils the new acoustic ballad, “Pope Francis,” premiering via Rolling Stone. The song appears in the upcoming Netflix film, The Two Popes. Dessner scored the soundtrack, which is available for preorder and will be released on December 6th via Milan Records.
The contemplative song was recorded at Abbey Road and features London Contemporary Orchestra. It opens with a tender guitar melody, which blends with warm orchestral swells in the arrangement.

Back around the ‘90s, “music inspired by the film” albums got a bad name, as buyers tired of collections full of random recordings that clearly were inspired by nothing but the desire to use movie branding to launch a hit song. But Alfonso Cuarón, the director of “Roma,” is determined to find some artistic validity in the idea of a companion album that was created independently from a film’s soundtrack… and to actually have there be some truth in advertising in that “inspired by” tag.
Not one of the 15 songs on the newly released album “Music Inspired by the Film ‘Roma’” appears in or was intended for the Oscar-nominated movie. The closest any of the choices come is a fresh recording by English singer Laura Marling of Mary Hopkins’ 1968 hit “Those Were the Days,” a version of which does pop up in “Roma” — albeit not Hopkins’ version, but an easy-listening cover by Ray Conniff.

Not to be outdone by Ariana Grande’s impending record news, filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón has announced the track list and release date for his new album, which, coincidentally, is also due Feb. 8. He’s the curator of “Music Inspired by the Film Roma,” which was already teased by a Billie Eilish track, and is now revealed to include songs from an eclectic lineup of rock, pop and Edm acts including Beck, Patti Smith, El-p, DJ Shadow, Laura Marling and T Bone Burnett.
This new album is not to be confused with “Roma (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack),” which came out in December and contains the songs — mostly but not entirely Spanish-language — heard in the movie. The “Inspired By” album consists of all new recordings, mostly but not entirely in English, and credits as co-producers Lynn Fainchtein, who served as music supervisor on the film, along with Randall Poster, another celebrated music supervisor.

Composer Maurice Jarre died Sunday in Los Angeles. The name might not ring a bell, but his scores certainly do. The triple-Oscar winner wrote the music to many classic movies including "Dr. Zhivago," "A Passage to India," "Ghost," "Dead Poets Society" and "The Man Who Would Be King." His most recognizable work is "Somewhere My Love (Lara's Theme)" from Dr. Zhivago, which also became a pop hit, as recorded by Ray Conniff, in 1966. Like many composers, Jarre , 84, just liked to work. Sure he did the classics, but he also did comedy-- downright silly fare like "Top Secret!" and...
