Chums, a forthcoming TV series about the Oxford University days of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is set to be illuminated by never before seen stills by acclaimed photographer Dafydd Jones.
Two Rivers recently optioned Simon Kuper’s book of the same name, telling the history of Johnson and fellow Oxford alumni turned politicians Michael Gove, David Cameron, George Osborne and Jacob Rees-Mogg.
Chums is now set to become a four-part series, with many of the stories brought to life through the photography of Jones, who studied his craft Oxford Polytechnic while several of the country’s future leaders partied nearby.
On Instagram, Jones explained how he came to photograph future prime minister Boris Johnson:

Abacus Media Rights has clinched rapid sales in more than half the world’s major territories on “Killing Escobar,” proving the enduring market appeal of one of Latin America’s most powerful IPs, Pablo Escobar – if producers find a new and unique way into his story.
In the case of “Killing Escobar,” this comes via the extraordinary true account of Scottish mercenary and ex-Sas operative Peter McAleese who was hired by the notorious Cali Cartel to recruit and lead a 12-man team of ex-special forces commandos to assassinate the world’s biggest drug baron, Pablo Escobar.
The hit is planned at the one place Escobar thinks he is safe: his Hacienda Nápoles luxury retreat near Medellín whose attractions included an African wildlife zoo and one of Al Capone’s automobiles.
Narrated by McAleese himself, and driven by cinema-standard reconstruction of the actual nerve-biting mission, “Killing Escobar” mixes a combat...

A new feature documentary has secured exclusive access to the story of Peter McAleese, the Scottish mercenary and ex-Sas operative who was hired by a Colombian drug cartel to assassinate drug baron Pablo Escobar.
Produced by Glasgow-based Two Rivers Media and Salon Pictures, the producers of David Bowie film “Stardust,” “Killing Escobar” is told in McAleese’s own words and features never-before-seen footage of his 1989 Colombian mission. The doc also reveals how McAleese’s violent upbringing in Glasgow, Sas training and experience as a mercenary in Africa led him to take on the daring — and seemingly suicidal — assignment.
Commissioned by BBC Scotland, the film is backed by fledgling distributor Abacus Media Rights, who hold international distribution rights, as well as The National Lottery through Screen Scotland. Directed by award-winning filmmaker David Whitney, the film will bow at the Glasgow Film Festival on March 7 and air on BBC Scotland later this year.

Two Rivers Media has bought out parent group Kew Media Group’s minority stake in the business.
Formed by former Stv Productions head Alan Clements in January 2019, the production outfit behind Channel 5’s recent “Susan Hill’s Ghost Story” launched with the backing of Kew, Noble Grossart Investments and Channel 4’s Indie Growth Fund.
Noble Grossart Investments and Channel 4’s Indie Growth Fund are increasing their interests to facilitate the buy-out.
The buy-out comes a month after Kew Media Group triggered a strategic review of its business, revealing that the company could be broken up or sold completely following a financially turbulent period for Kew.
Kew was launched by Steven Silver and Peter Sussman in 2017, and owns a roster of Canadian production companies such as Bristow Global Media, Frantic Films and Our House Media, as well as distribution outfits Content Media, which became Kew Media Distribution, and Tcb Media Rights.

Emma Healey's bestselling novel Elizabeth Is Missing will be made into a three-part series by Stv Productions.
Healey's 2014 debut novel will have a script developed by writer Andrea Gibb (BBC Films' Swallows and Amazons and Music and Silence).
Elizabeth Is Missing tells the story of Maud and her quest to find her missing best friend while battling with dementia.
"Elizabeth Is Missing is a dramatist's dream," said Gibbs.
"It has everything; a great premise, a compelling mystery, an unusual and engaging heroine and is both funny and very moving."
She added: "It is also about something very important. Dementia is a time bomb. According to the Alzheimer's Society, two thirds of people with dementia are women and by 2021 there will be a million people with it in the UK.
"It's not an inevitable disease of old age but a disease of the brain which affects not just the person...

A new unprecedented crowdfunding platform, dana.io, which doesn't take a percentage of the money raised, launches today. Filmmakers, artists, and activists around the world can use it for free. This new model is based on the ancient practice of unconditional giving known as "dana" in the Buddhist tradition. Just as Buddhist nuns and monks throughout history have been sustained by the dana offered to them by supporters, the dana.io crowdfunding platform will be freely offered for the funding of projects. The plan is that users, inspired by the concept that catalyzed the funding of their projects, will, in turn, voluntarily gift some of the money they raise to dana.io. The director of dana.io, Alan Clements, shared his vision in a series of exclusive interviews. His passionate belief in the power of gifting grew out of his experience living as a Buddhist monk in Burma during the late 1970s and 1980s,...

With the huge popularity of Game of Thrones and Spartacus on HBO and Starz respectively, it would appear that sword and sandals genre is poised to make a comeback on the small screen. Now a couple of other shows are trying to jump on the bandwagon by tapping into similarly epic and pseudo-historical material. According to THR, a new series based on the Scottish hero William Wallace is in the works courtesy of Stv Productions. Tentatively titled Wallace, it will not be directly connected to the movie Braveheart nor will it use the Braveheart name, but it is based on an idea by Seoras Wallace, who served as an adviser on the film. The History Channel has also picked up their very first scripted series, a project from MGM Studios called simply Vikings. More details after the jump. The legendary Scottish hero, William Wallace, brought to life for the big screen by Mel Gibson in Braveheart, is getting a new TV series biopic. The historical drama series is based on the life of the war hero who fought for the freedom of Scotland.
The series is being created and written by Mick Davis (The Eleventh Hour), and according to THR "it will focus on Wallace's back story, his years spent attempting to unify Scotland, his loves and losses as well as his legendary battles with King Edward the Longshank and rival Robert the Bruce."
When Braveheart was released in 1995 I did extensive research on Wallace to get to know more about him, and find out what was true in the film and what wasn't. One thing's for sure, the guy was a complete badass, and if a series is being made based on his life, I'll be watching it.

Of course I've never stopped reading the Sun-Times. That's the start of my daily ritual. But while I used to read four newspapers every day, I found that, gradually, I wasn't. You know how it is. You get mired in the matrix of the web and think you're reading all the news you can handle. You have the papers, but they're unopened at the end of the day.
However, during the election season and the Inauguration euphoria, I renewed our subscription to the New York Times and remembered, at first almost unconsciously, how much I enjoy reading a newspaper. The pages follow in orderly progression. The headlines and artwork point me to stories I find interesting. I am settled. I am serene. I read, I think. I am freed from clicking and the hectic need to scroll, to bounce between links. I don't have search for the print stories. They find me.
