Dev Patel directs Armie Hammer in a stylish dark comedy. Don Hertzfeldt delivers a second installment of his award-winning animated saga. And Dime Davis documents artist Mark Bradford’s creativity in action. These are just a few of the treats to be found among the 69 live action, animated, and documentary shorts playing the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.
The Sundance programmers whittled the 69 official selections from 8,740 submissions (down 245 from the previous year). Making the cut were several shorts with recognizable talent in front of the lens: Simon Helberg and Brett Gelman suffer through an unbalanced relationship in Jessica Sander’s two-hander “End of the Line,” Lakeith Stanfield plays himself in Shaka King’s “Lazercism,” and Armie Hammer undertakes a supporting role as a television huckster in Dev Patel’s “Home Shopper.”

"Better living through chemistry" was the slogan of the DuPont Corporation from 1935 to 1982. "Better living through mathematics" could be the tag line for Marilyn Agrelo's film, "An Invisible Sign," an adaptation of the favorably-reviewed novel by Aimee Bender. The novel and movie are both too far on the twee/precious side to be readily accepted by even some art-house audiences; twee and precious meaning dainty, delicate, cute, quaint, affected. The pace is slow, the dialogue is banal, and the performers like figures from the fairy tale that opens the film. The fairy tale, which is told by dad (John Shea) to his small, precocious daughter Mona Gray (Bailee Madison), involves a king whose territory is not large enough to accommodate the population. Each family is ordered to choose one member to be killed, but one family member successfully petitioned: "If we cut one limb from each of us, those...

Author Aimee Bender writes about the lives of ordinary people. But she’s known for gently folding in surrealistic elements into her stories which require her characters to deal with the consequences of shifting realities. Such is the case with her fourth book entitled “The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake.” It’s a novel about a young girl that discovers that she is able to taste her mother’s hidden emotions in a lemon birthday cake.

IFC Films just released a trailer for An Invisible Sign, the drama directed by Marilyn Agrelo, and based on the book by Aimee Bender. The film stars Jessica Alba, J.K. Simmons, Chris Messina, Sophie Nyweide and Bailee Madison. Here is the plot synopsis:
Young Mona idolizes her father, a brilliant mathematician. When he suddenly demonstrates signs of mental illness, Mona begins to obsess about numbers, using them to interpret an unpredictable and threatening world. Now an adult (Jessica Alba), Mona’s old superstitions and compulsive behaviors continue to flourish, but a new job as an elementary school math teacher (a position she both relishes and dreads), may force her out of her protective shell. With imagination and humor, as well as a special sensitivity to the realities of mental illness, An Invisible Sign carries a magic all its own.

What do docs The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters and Mad Hat Ballroom have in common? Both films received their world premiere in Park City, but not at Redford's festival but the other main street venue the hosts Slamdance. If I'm on target with my predictions, we'll be seeing the filmmakers of these docs, Seth Gordon (as a producer) and Marilyn Agrelo in Park City once again, but with Sundance credentials. - What do docs The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters and Mad Hat Ballroom have in common? J.K. Simmons and Chris Messina have signed on to join Jessica Alba in Marilyn Agrelo’s upcoming drama “An Invisible Sign of My Own.”
Based on the novel by Aimee Bender, the film follows a reclusive math teacher (Alba) whose life takes a turn when a new science teacher starts working at her school.
Details about Messina’s and Simmons’ roles are unknown at this point. Variety describes the project as an "Amelie"-style indie.
Simmons can currently be seen onscreen in “Burn After Reading.” His future projects include “Jennifer’s Body” and “Crazy on the outside.”
As for Messina, he most recently starred in Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” and “Humboldt County.” He’ll also appear in Nora Ephron’s “Julie & Julia.”
Final word: Sounds like an interesting project, although I’m not quite sure about this “Amelie”-style thing. “Amelie” is a unique masterpiece no one can get remotely close to.

Marilyn Agrelo's indie project An Invisible Sign of My Own has gained two more great actors: J.K. Simmons and Chris Messina. The two will star alongside of Jessica Alba in a "whimsical fable" that follows the transformation of a sheltered, math-obsessed teacher when a new science teacher arrives at her school. I'm guessing that Alba will be play the math teacher and Messina potentially the science teacher. It's described as an Amelie-style film, for those looking for something interesting to grasp onto with this project. The screenplay was written by writing duo Pam Falk and Mike Ellis (of The Wedding Planner) and is an adaptation of Aimee Bender's book of the same name. I guess this should be interesting? I'm not the biggest fan of Jessica Alba, but I think she really needs some strong indie roles in order to improve her acting. Hopefully this is a movie...

NEW YORK -- America Ferrera has signed on to star in "An Invisible Sign of My Own", a coming-of-age drama that will also mark Marilyn Agrelo's first directorial effort since her breakout documentary "Mad Hot Ballroom".
The movie, expected to begin shooting shortly, is based on Aimee Bender's quirky novel about a 20-year-old loner named Mona Gray (Ferrera) who as a child turned to math for salvation after her father became ill. As an adult, Gray now teaches the subject and must help her students through their own crises. "Wedding Planner" scribes Michael Ellis and Pamela Falk penned the adaptation.
Endeavor put together the project, which will be produced by Jana Edelbaum's iDealPartners Film Fund, the New York entity that's also behind the Uma Thurman comedy "Motherhood" and Lionsgate's Russell Crowe crime-saga "Tenderness".
Ferrera will have a relatively short window in which to shoot the movie; the "Ugly Betty" star is on an aggressive production schedule for her ABC hit, with ABC Studios still in production on the show until early May and then going back into production in June as the show shoots ahead of a potential SAG strike.
