A few years before Roy Thomas Baker gained fame as the producer for some of the greatest albums by Queen and the Cars, he was one of several engineers to work with the ever-prolific Frank Zappa.
A new four-disc box set, The Mothers 1970, spotlights some of the work Baker did with Zappa, including a rare early mix of “Sharleena,” the track that closed out Zappa’s Chunga’s Revenge LP.
Interestingly, it’s cleaner sounding and doesn’t have as much of the mushy background guitar that creeps up in the Chunga version,...

Unheard recordings from Frank Zappa’s short-lived but beloved 1970 lineup of the Mothers feature in the upcoming box set The Mothers 1970, a four-disc set featuring 70 unreleased studio and live tracks out of the legendary guitarist’s Vault.
The Zappa Trust announced the June 26th-bound release with the newly unearthed “Portuguese Fenders,” a searing live instrumental boasting a fiery Zappa solo; the track was discovered among other live performances Zappa recorded himself on his personal tape recorder.

The Cars were the New Wave band with the purest Top 40 heart, thanks to Ric Ocasek’s vision of combining post-punk detachment with glossy hooks and a nervy sense of hunger. The Cars joked that they should’ve called their astonishingly tight 1978 self-titled debut The Cars’ Greatest Hits, for good reason, and they kept rolling out precision-tuned new models throughout the Eighties. Ocasek also had success as a producer and solo artist, and when the Cars returned with their brilliantly titled 2011 comeback LP, Move Like This, they proved they could...

God save Queen. I mean it, man. When the prog-metal glam vaudeville act recorded the album News of the World next door to the Sex Pistols, who were recording the punk classic Never Mind the Bollocks … Here are the Sex Pistols, their drummer gave us a "Sheer Heart Attack." He blew the balls off the amps for an aural attack downstroked from a stack of guitars set at 11. Brian May was the band's guitarist, and a regal hard rock master plucking strings with a six-pence. Freddie Mercury was the singer with the operatic range. But Roger Taylor, a beatkeeper who sang the band's highest parts, came up with a classic shredder riff you "Gotta Fight from the Inside" for a song he played all the instruments on.

“What we’re trying to do is build Guns N’ Roses back into something,” Axl Rose told Rolling Stone in January 2000. “I’d like to take some of the old Guns fans along with me gradually into the 21st century.”
At the time, Guns fans and Geffen Records were anxiously anticipating the supposedly imminent arrival of Chinese Democracy, the band’s long-awaited first album of original material since 1991’s twin Use Your Illusion releases. Doug Goldstein, the band’s then-manager, informed Rolling Stone that “we are now 99 percent musically done and 80 percent vocals done,...

Rock music producer Roy Thomas Baker has filed a federal lawsuit in New York against Sony Music Entertainment, alleging the record label owes significant royalties including at least $1 million in compensatory damages for work on 21 Journey songs. Over the past few years, many musicians have brought claims against major labels for treating digital music as "sales" instead of "licenses" and thus paying a lower royalty rate. Last March, Sony settled a class action lawsuit by agreeing to $8 million
