Martin Shaw, who has headlined some of the most popular English dramas of the last half century, says he has the role of his career in “George Gently” as the title character, a police detective who struggles to find his footing after his wife is killed. The long-running British series is finally eligible for the Emmys thanks to the participation of the streaming service Acorn TV.
Back in 2007, Shaw had his pick of projects and was drawn to this loose adaptation of the Alan Hunter crime novels by the creative forces behind the scenes. “Peter Flannery has such a wonderful reputation. He’d won awards for ‘Our Friends in the North.’ His name first and foremost made me drive to London to meet. I read the first script and thought it was sensational.”

The last installment in the series, “George Gently and the New Age,” is contending for Best TV Movie at the 2018 Emmys. This finale brings Shaw’s character full circle as he inches closer to solving the death of his wife. We round up the latest horror-tinged Blu-ray and DVD releases....
So, after a brief hiatus, it turns out a lot’s happened in the few months between these round ups. A snap general election has been called, terror has struck at the heart of Manchester and a scandal approaching Watergate levels has hit the U.S presidency. More importantly, Troll 2 has finally come to UK Netflix and is the cherry on the cake made entirely of a series of kind of wonderful, kind of… not films on DVD and Bluray.
So, 1990’s Troll 2, you may or may not be aware of, is generally regarded as one of the very greatest 'so bad it’s good' movies. There are many worse (The Rollerblade Seven or Gary Oldman little person rom-com Tiptoes come to mind), though it’s difficult to think of many other truly awful movies...

George Gently, Series 6
Created by Peter Flannery
Available Streaming on Acorn.TV
The police procedural is as old as television itself. Over the decades, pretty much every permutation of the genre has had its day in the sun, with the genre itself often changing as television progressed. From the original Golden Age classic Dragnet, to the increasingly serialized Hill Street Blues, to the grittier NYPD Blue and the modern era’s novelistic, realistic masterpiece The Wire, the genre shifts with each age, and reflects back on the society that produces it.
You may have noticed that all of the shows in the above paragraph were American productions, and in fact, most of the genre’s heights hail from this side of the pond. Yet the British have their own history of police shows (from Z-Cars, through Prime Suspect, and even last year’s Broadchurch) to draw from. George Gently, which just wrapped its sixth series,...

Inspector George Gently
By Kieran Kinsella
With most of the nation under extreme heat advisories there has never been a better time to close the curtains, crank up the A/C and power up the DVD player. You can begin your summer TV-fest by watching Acorn Media’s George Gently series 4. Gently is utterly captivating. It’s set in the same dreary North Eastern corner of England as ITV’s Vera but unlike that show, Gently is set in the swinging sixties rather than the present time. Both shows tackle hard hitting subjects but George Gently isn’t as soul destroyingly depressing as Vera.
Series 4 consists of two feature length episodes. The first centers around a group of teenage girls who are desperate to enjoy the new found freedoms of the era regardless of their parent’s concerns. Things change pretty quickly when one of the girls is murdered. Gently...

The BBC has commissioned four new George Gently dramas to air next year. Based on Alan Hunter's Inspector Gently book series, the new films will focus on veteran Scotland Yard detective George Gently (Martin Shaw) and his partner John Bacchus (Lee Ingleby) as they solve crimes in '60s Northumberland. Peter Flannery and Mick Ford will co-write the four instalments. "The joy of writing the Gently stories lies in the period and the place," said Flannery. "The place because it's where I grew up; the period for the same reason, plus it gives me a chance to write about a (more)...
