Director: Adam Wingard | Stars: Sharni Vinson, Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen, Nicholas Tucci

More thriller than traditional horror – a home invasion movie wrapped in a bloody package – You’re Next delivers.

2. Evil Dead (2013)

R | 91 min | Horror

57 Metascore

Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.

Director: Fede Alvarez | Stars: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci

Votes: 197,196 | Gross: $54.24M

The remake is dead on with their handling of special effects. Gore, blood, the evil forest, and lots of interesting wounds are all well executed with minimal CGI. Everything looked and sounded real.

3. The Conjuring (2013)

R | 112 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

68 Metascore

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.

Director: James Wan | Stars: Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor

Votes: 554,628 | Gross: $137.40M

Congratulations to James Wan and The Conjuring team for a beautifully done descent into the depths of horror and possessed insanity.

4. World War Z (2013)

PG-13 | 116 min | Action, Adventure, Horror

63 Metascore

Former United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself.

Director: Marc Forster | Stars: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale

Votes: 719,160 | Gross: $202.36M

Once upon a time, zombies were hidden in the corners of low budget horror. Although there have always been vocal fans of this horror sub-genre, it has only been in recent years that zombies have proven themselves as a cultural force that won’t be ignored.

World War Z further proves this trend. It is an a-list Hollywood movie with a pretty massive budget. For that alone, it gives us cause to celebrate. It further legitimizes zombie movies, and the horror genre as a whole.

World War Z is beautifully produced. All the parts (the music, effects, writing, etc.) come together to create a believable take on the zombie apocalypse.

5. They Will Outlive Us All (2013)

Director: Patrick Shearer | Stars: Jessi Gotta, Nat Cassidy, Alyssa Simon, Gavin Starr Kendall

Votes: 138

Produced, written, and staring Horror Queen Jessi Gotta, They Will Out Live Us All is pure magic.

(If you enjoyed Slither, you will likely enjoy this flick.)

6. Bettie Page Reveals All (2012)

R | 101 min | Documentary, Biography

64 Metascore

The world's greatest pinup model and cult icon, Bettie Page, recounts the true story of how her free expression overcame government witch-hunts to help launch America's sexual revolution.

Director: Mark Mori | Stars: Bettie Page, Hugh Hefner, Olivia de Berardinis, Dita Von Teese

Votes: 1,631 | Gross: $0.10M

What makes this film exciting is Bettie’s personal involvement. She was very choosy about who she shared with, who she told her story to. This movie goes a step further as she takes on the role of the narrator – it’s her voice telling her story.

7. Dysmorphia (2012)

12 min | Short, Horror

One man prepares to remove a limb that he perceives as being 'alien' or 'foreign'.

Director: Andy Stewart | Star: Gordon Holliday

Votes: 88

It is the micro moments, the impeccable sound design, and the final reveal that make Dysmorphia more than a sum of its parts.

8. To Jennifer (2013)

Director: James Cullen Bressack | Stars: Chuck Pappas, Jessica Cameron, James Cullen Bressack, Jody Barton

Votes: 800

Do you like POV movies? Because To Jennifer is one of the best out in a long time. After The Blair Witch Project made it big, the horror genre became saturated with movies that address the camera and use filming as a plot device. Where others have failed, To Jennifer kills it. They give us a plausible reason, a compelling story, an interesting cast of characters, and a punchy third act. To Jennifer is a very strong horror movie with thriller and humor elements.

9. Hayride (2012)

Not Rated | 93 min | Crime, Drama, Horror

A college student returning home for Halloween is forced to face his childhood fears when an escaped killer takes refuge in his family's "Haunted Hayride".

Director: Terron R. Parsons | Stars: Richard Tyson, Sherri Eakin, Jeremy Ivy, Jeremy Sande

Votes: 827

It is a nice set up for a new face in the slasher genre, and with a sequel already in post-production – it could be the creation of a new cult icon.

10. A Date with Ghosts (2015 Video)

70 min | Horror

A group of friends get trapped in a haunted abbey with no easy way of escaping.

Director: Jason M.J. Brown | Stars: Dereck Beilby, Jason M.J. Brown, Deborah Carlin, Chloe Clarke

Votes: 79

The monk ghosts are creepy because of their simplicity: they are ominous and powerful.

According to Brown’s IMDB profile, this is his first jump to a feature length movie. It is a strong first showing, and we are looking forward to what he has in store for us next.
