The Conspirators (1944)
Realistic portrayal of anxious life during WWII Europe
The greatness of this film lies in its ability to make you feel absorbed in the story, characters' lives, and outcomes. Negulesco's masterful direction and the excellent cast's strong delivery leaves you wanting to follow every move and hear every word.
There is also a nice variety of scenes throughout that engage you in the complexities of the characters' thoughts and lives. It adds to the sense of anxiety they felt during the war, even in neutral Portugal. Through Henreid's early anti-German sabotage in the Netherlands, music at Café Império in Lisbon, barroom conversations and back alley meet-ups, everything feels and moves perfectly, adding depth to the story. No scene, word, or movement is ever out of place.
The entire movie was interesting and enjoyable and I watched it several times in 1 week. Isn't one hallmark of a high quality movie the need to watch it several times to pick up all the nuances? Even so, I never felt like it was on repeat.
One final note - the picture is a little dark, so I increased the screen brightness and turned off the lights in the room and that helped. Also, wish it were available in HD, but otherwise highly recommend!
High Sierra (1940)
Humphrey Bogart & Ida Lupino at their best
This film shows Humphrey Bogart's incredible versatility and natural talent.
The story and his acting as a gangster are so believable and Ida Lupino was a perfect match. Her performance was so great that in my mind she is forever typecast in the role.
How many times can you say you enjoyed every minute of a movie? I'd put a small handful in that category, all of which star Humphrey Bogart or John Wayne.
This one is even available in digital HD! Thanks Warner Brothers - score huge!
Allegheny Uprising (1939)
Terrific and very underrated
I've long thought this is one of John Wayne's most suspenseful and overall entertaining films. The story is so well acted and believable that you're actually there. It's easy to see why he is so legendary - he had an on-screen/off-screen presence and ability like few others.
Claire Trevor is also very dynamic here. She's funny, witty, has impeccable timing and is perfectly cast. She brings incredible energy and top-tier talent.
How often can you say you enjoyed every minute of a movie? Far and away, this is a perfect example. Its all around terrific, underrated, and the epitome of a memorable, enjoyable film. I only wish it were longer and available in HD! Warner Brothers - can you deliver for a loyal fan?
Enjoy!
North to Alaska (1960)
A true gem & one of Wayne's best
This movie is wide-ranging and has every dynamic you can fit - action, suspense, comedy, romance, adventure. Above all else, it is funny, its paced perfectly, and keeps your absorbed. John Wayne is at his best.
My wife isn't a huge fan of John Wayne or westerns, but after we watched this together, she said, "That was a great time." She's never said that about any movie - and we've watched many.
To me, this is one of Wayne's best, and to us, one of our favorites. We wish we had seen this years ago. We purchased the HD version and it is worth every penny.
Enjoy!
Passage to Marseille (1944)
There's always something to be learned from those who fight for freedom.
This is a fascinating story with intriguing progression and characters. The flashbacks and twists throughout keep you absorbed. The dialogue is snappy; the music fits perfectly. Bogart is central of course but the full supporting cast is terrific and provides greater depth.
Most importantly - whether yesterday or today - there's always something to be learned from those who fight for freedom. What sacrifices do we make or measures do we take to protect our freedom today, and what do we learn from how that parallels this story? Times change, but the principles remain the same. This movie is a simple but great reminder of that for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and rate it among my favorites along with other Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne, and Randolph Scott films.
