Moonbase 8 (2020)
A perfect brew of Krisel, Tim, John and Fred
Whilst some will not love Moonbase 8, this gem deserves as much of a chance as possible, two episodes in and I was already squeeling and laughing with delight of seeing Tim Heideckers character struggle with his shortcomings and loving everyone's tightly tuned performances. It comes from years and years of these guys working together and knowing each other's comedic tics and seeing where something funny can take the scene. With Jonathon Krisel at the helm, John C. Reilly's "Cap" grounding the story perfectly and Eric Wareheim serving as a producer... this is gold for any fan of the 'Abso-Lutely' universe and should be great enough to get under the skin of a newcomer to the comedic art of how these guys work. This show, sadly... may be too edgy or different from generic comedies to survive, however if the stars align... we might be lucky with the ratings and we might see more seasons of this great show with so much potential to grow and flourish. It has so much heart and Tim Heidecker gets another great chance to show his range beyond just comedy, he knows how to switch on and be real as an performer and that's one of many keys that give this show energy and magic. Please watch this show, and watch as much as you can, it gets its legs and the funny grows and continues to grow. I love it and hope you will too.
Round the Twist (1989)
Fantastic
When I was five years old, my favourite t.v. show was Round the twist, no matter how badly directed it was and how bad some of the acting was, I will always hold it dear to my heart. As an Australian, I can safely say that to have a teenagers program set along the Great Ocean Road and have some Australian humour set in with it, makes it a timeless classic. And the characters in it that are portrayed are funny and interesting, such as Sam Vandenberg as Pete Twist when he can't stop saying "without my pants", Paul Jennings is a genius. My favourite place in the whole world is the Great Ocean Road and to see it used in such away makes me a proud Australian, because lets face it, we don't have many good shows, and the ones that we do have are very few and are unfortunately fading out of popularity with the gross overimposement of American television shows
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Most amazing movie of all time
A Clockwork Orange changed me, when I was 16 I was at the video store and I saw it and my Mum says it was great, I was doubtful. I put "A Clockwork Orange" into the DVD player, the next few hours of my "viddying" changed my whole perspective on cinema. Malcolm McDowell is absolutely perfect for the role of Alex and as he says he was born to play Alex. At first I was totally thrown by the outlandish language and dress code of Alex's gang of droogs. In fact the entire cast was perfect from Michael Bates as the Chief guard to Philip Stone as Alex's Father. Stanley Kubrick is a god and everyone who wants to direct a movie should bow down to him, and we should all try to phase out appalling movies like XXX, The Fast and the Furious and Van Helsing (yuck)
Gallipoli (1981)
One for the Classics
Gallipoli has some of the best Australian characters in movies to date, and Australian culture. In Gallipoli, with such scenes as playing Australian Rules Football at the Egyptian Pyramids and sticking it to British Soldiers whilst riding on donkeys are genuine, ingenious and charismatic ideas that come from director Peter Weir, plus many of the scenes were thought up on the spot by the crew and cast, like the scene where the Australian soldiers are parading through the Cairo slums on donkey and slandering the seniority of the English army with quick-witted songs. Also the use of Jean Michel Jarres' Oxygene in the sprinting scenes were an amazing addition the movie, especially where the two boys were running through the desolate outback and it provides a certain feeling of great open spaces and appreciation of the Australian outback.
Australian movies like this just aren't made anymore and it is sad, but unfortunately the movie market tends to sway towards Hollywood and that is where the rest of the world misses out.
