Wish (2023)
Great Thanksgiving movie with the family
To start off, I have to say this rating is getting a boost for the following reasons:
No sexuality
No politics
No ideologies
The story is very predictable for an adult, but the way everything gets resolved isn't. Because there is magic, you're expecting something magical, which is not "technically" the case.
Our heroine is a good person trying to do good for others for non selfish reasons.
Our antagonist is a very typical trying to do the wrong things for the right reasons and eventually is seduced by power.
And in the end, what trumps evil is a very basic human need that we sometimes give up.
All in all it was a great movie with a good moral to the story and the music was great.
The Menu (2022)
A review with no food similes
I'm quite surprised this has a 7 star rating as it seems like most are giving this a 3-5 star because they don't like the characters and thought the point of the film was useless.
However, knowing it's a horror and thriller with a bunch of "random" people going to a secluded island, you should be able to gather something isn't quite right, and already know what is going to happen. It's more about the why behind it all. So the plot isn't the point cuz you already know what's gonna happen, but rather the scenery along the way.
Ralph Fiennes is great. He is one of the best insane villain actors. Anya Taylor-Joy was great as she was the only normal person in attendance.
I enjoyed the slowness of the plot as it kept you wondering and once I knew where everybody stood, I enjoyed the last 30 minutes of how do I escape.
Justified: City Primeval (2023)
How to ruin a good show
I rewatched the entire Justified original series. You actually cared about the good guys and the bad. Funny characters with fun personalities with a rich back story and everything.
Now let's reboot it cuz ideas are hard to come by, and why the heck not?
First, let's find someone with an insanely annoying voice that makes you cringe every time they talk.
Seconds, since it's the year of our Lord 2023, let's ensure to bring up race CONSTANTLY. Even better, we'll constantly make the non important characters say how much they hate the other race and fixate on stereotypes that aren't really called for.
Finally, remove all the charm. Nothing but dark and bleak cinematography to really captivate the audience.
Now you've got yourself a modern reboot.
Marmaduke (2022)
Unwatchable
First off, I hope this was made by high school animation students or the budget was incredibly low. Mouth movements are poor and overall character design is ridiculous.
Then the story... swing and a miss.
Netflix is headed for quantity, not quality.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)
Solid movie with 2 issues
Great movie with plenty of fun and interesting story to go around.
Two problems are, the 20 min tangent right in the middle that had nothing to do with anything was dumb, and would have cut the movie to a more acceptable length. Since it's Jim carrey and Hollywood, I'm sure they all patted themselves on the back with the obvious Trump reference. We get it, you hate Trump are we done with this yet??
Halo (2022)
New universe
After reading some of the reviews, seems like most people don't like it for 3 reasons: acting, story, not canon.
Acting - it's ok... since there aren't any A listers, so it's understandable. I assumed right off the bat most of the budget is going into CGI, which rocks BTW
Story - hard to know where everything is going after one episode. So way too many haters for this reason. I'm definitely intrigued.
Canon - Halo already has books and video games with the official canon. This is BASED on all that. I liken it to the new Maleficent movies. Characters are there, but the universe around it is totally new. Same here. Same Halo universe, different version. So who cares it's not exactly like the game/books?? Too high of expectations I think...
This show could end up being a solid sci-fi series. We'll see...
Turning Red (2022)
Worst Pixar ever?
This movie has a giant problem, and it's not necessarily the red panda. As a dad with 2 girls about ready for this stage, I welcomed the humor and idea of a movie about the quirks of the age and most importantly, how to overcome and become better.
But, it wasn't funny and it was way too over the top trying to squeeze as many innuendos in as possible.
Maybe had they skipped about 20 minutes of fluff and destruction and gotten to the moral of the story faster with less distractions, it would have been better I think.
Vegas Vacation (1997)
Great comedy!
Are others putting this movie up against Schindlers List? This is a Chevy Chase comedy and with uncle eddy, nick papageorggio and Wayne newton! Great laughs and a classic lampoon vacation.
Shut In (2022)
Review reflects budget
Don't get me wrong, this movie has its issues. Some of it seems implausible and far fetched, but I went in with open eyes knowing who made it and their budget.
I was entertained. I liked the ending and the little girl was awesome.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Not my cup of tea
This was the first suicide squad I've seen, so because I'm not judging it against the other horrible DC movies, my take is a little different.
I don't like any of the characters they are trying to get you to like. The painfully absurd back stories of each, trying to switch from typical James Gunn funny over the top comedy (which isn't funny in this context) to a serious scene trying to explain each character doesn't work that well.
The evil plot is dumb. Either Rick and Morty ripped it off, or the writers of this ripped them off.
I guess I just don't like the suicide squad and nobody can make these silly characters likeable for me.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Lots of great action sequences!
My biggest complaint isn't the movie, but with those who can't just enjoy an action movie. Every movie with time travel has holes in it.. just enjoy the movie!
At first the movie is about saving the world, but later becomes much more about Chris Pratt's character and his personal shortcomings.
Great cast, great acting, typical random comments to break up the serious/tense situations, awesome action scenes and wonderful moral of the story.
Just like when Marty McFly's YOUR FIRED fax is erased. Your future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one.
About Time (2013)
Where did that come from???
At first glance, you're like, oh I like Rachel McAdams, this seems like a fun premise. Then when it's over you're thinking wow, what an amazing movie and what great advice to live life.
I found myself looking into my own future from both perspectives feeling optimistic about the future.
This movie will definitely be in my yearly rotation.
The Boss Baby: Family Business (2021)
Slow silly start but sticks the landing
Movie has lots of fun parts that hold it together. But is definitely trying too hard for the first 30 minutes.
Once the plot is clear, it gets good. The silliness is appropriate and the baby/kid jokes are funny and adult and kid friendly.
High Score (2020)
Intersectional hard at work
This was a pretty good series with lots of fun information about video game origins, but there was so much time wasted so Netflix could check the intersectionality boxes so Twitter wouldn't throw a fit.
Rogue One (2016)
2nd best Star Wars
Just watched this movie again after having seen it before, and also after having seen all other 9 movies within a week.
I realized that this movie makes A New Hope better. It really starts off the original trilogy off a great feeling that the Empire can be beaten.
Also, I know C3PO's job was to be comic relief, but K2SO is funnier and much more realistic.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Amazing yet boring
The Sci-Fi aspect of this movie is amazing. The space, green screen backgrounds of other planets and such. But because you don't really know why anything is happening and there was so little character or situational development, when you learn new information throughout the movie be it good or bad, I felt like it didn't matter or so what.
Soul (2020)
Adult animated movie at its finest
This movie is the reason I love animated movies. They are usually funny for all ages, well written and most importantly make you feel good afterwards. This particular instance lacked the funny humorous character, which lead to my kids age 5 and 7 leaving after about 45 minutes. For an adult it was still funny enough to keep you going.
However I was glued. I couldn't wait to see how the protagonist was going to "get what he deserved" after all his hard work and it didn't disappoint.
Little Fires Everywhere (2020)
Great till I hated Kerry Washington...
What a great premise, great lead actresses and awesome characters!
This show had me totally sucked in until I started hated Kerry Washington's character more and more. The constant playing of the race card gets old.
Maybe if everything wasn't constantly about identity politics it wouldn't bug me as much. But it just gets old, so I decided why bother continue???
Aladdin (2019)
just watch the original..
Why make this a shot for shot, song for song remake? Nobody can replace Genie, nor the original songs so why try? That's why this movie is awful and so un authentic.
Frozen II (2019)
Swing and a miss
This had serious potential. The story was headed down the right track but two things got in the way, the need for a useless forgettable song every 15 minutes, and a unknown detour in the plot ever 20 minutes. Cut out all the stuff that doesn't matter, and it could've been great. However I was so bored by hour one I just wanted it to be over.
