The cinematography disconnected me
21 April 2022
There are some flaws in the story, however that is not my main concern with this film. While some people might enjoy the type of cinematography this film had, for me I felt like it ruined the entire film. This type of random cinematography cheapened the film in my opinion, and I also did not like the color palette they put it with either. As stories about corruption are very important I think that this was such a shame, because the film simply lost me because of this and I felt disconnected the message it wanted me to come across. However I do like the theme of the film, and I certainly think more films should be made about corruption and the less fortunate, just not in this way.

A pure masterpiece and truly heart scaring
12 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I went in to this film without knowing what it was about, other then that it had something to do with WWII. I went out of the film with nothing short but the feeling that I had just seen something truly exceptional.

The romance genre is not my favorite out of all the genres out there, however this film absolutely stole my heart from the very first minutes of the film. There are plenty of plot explanations of this film, so I will not include that in this review. But as for the visuals of the film, absolutely stunning, great job from the cinematographer John Seale, and a well deserved Oscar win. The production design and costume design is also perfect and very fitting for the period the film is set in. The acting is superb and the score is incredibly haunting and beautiful, and is incredible at enhancing this beautiful, yet haunting love story. The directing of course from Anthony Minghella is very, very good, as he is able to tie all the strings together in this film, in a very neat and beautiful way. Some people have complained about this film, claiming that the pacing is too slow. I however found that this pacing was absolutely perfect in making us more involved in the films romances. Never at any point, did I feel bored or unentartained because the film is crafted in a way that makes us always longing for more, both in the love affair between Almasy and Katharine, but also in the love life of Hana.

A poetic film, that makes you really think. I for one, thought that Katherine died in the plane crash at the beginning of the film. When this turned out to not be true, I was filled with much more sorrow then I already had. And also, because Almasy kept saying "my wife", I genuinely thought he and Katharine had gotten married, which led to me expecting that they would get back together in the film, although this does not happen until Katharine is on her dying foot. A story that constantly unfolds, is the only story there is, and this film does this in such a beautifully touching yet horrifying way, that you only want more. I am excited to see what I get from it when I will watch it a second time in the future.

100 percent worth your time, not just if you're a romance lover, but also if you are a film buff because this was nothing short but a cinematic masterpiece.

A nice ride but at times too ridiculous
30 March 2022
Like Fargo, The Coen brothers have decided too add the same spirit to "The Big Lebowski". I certainly think this works as the whole motive of the protagonist is to retrieve his carpet, which is something ridiculous. Yet this idea still works very well and is very entertaining because of the great pacing, aesthetic and spirit of the film.

In the film we follow Jeffrey Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) known as "The Dude". Beacuse of the great production design, costume design and directing, as well as the spot on acting from Jeff Bridges, we get the impression that The Dude is living a life where he does not really care about much. However he cares deeply for his carpet that got ruined because of two debt collectors who mistook him for a different Lebowski. The Dude then later goes on to try to get a new carpet/money for a carpet by finding the other Lebowskis wife. This goes wrong and the rest of the movie than follows The Dude and his friend trying to fix this up. The film has suspense, comedy and an interesting plot, however it sometimes becomes too ridiculous. I personally thought the "dreams" The Dude was having while he was doped were a little out of place/unnecessary. Because the film already follows a comedic plot, and the films spirit is at the same level, these shots I found were personally too much. With that being said I found the film entertaining and a fun ride to watch. The Coen brothers certainly are great storytellers.
