Desperate Housewives (2004)
"Desperate Housewives" - The End of Reality TV
Desperate Housewives 4.0-5.0 Stars. Starring Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria, and James Denton.
Desperate Housewives was a surprise for me at the end of 2004. With too many reality TV shows involving Housewives such as "Nanny-911" and "Trading Spouses", I had assumed that this would be similar. Though this show is nothing like that, but is however a cullinan diamond in the rough. The show starts off with a bang; we venture into the lives of five regular housewives on Wisteria Lane where life seems to be nothing but tea and crumpets until the sudden mysterious suicide of Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong). Suspicions start as a secret unfolds one after another about Mary Alice's Seemingly perfect life when a blackmail note is discovered in her drawers. "I know what you did, It makes me sick, I'm going to tell" it reads, as her four friends Susan (Hatcher), Bree (Cross), Lynnette (Huffman), and Garielle (Longoria) try to uncover the secret their friend had tried so desperately to hide, that she would eventually die for it. Even worse is the fact that nosy neighbor Martha Huber (Estabrook) reeks more havoc with her little black book filled with devastating secrets of each family, until someone becomes brave enough to stand up to her. However, they soon find out that Martha Huber was only a red herring, and that things were only about to get worse.
Things that make this show so interesting and so persistently fresh is its smart and edgy creator Marc Cherry, who keeps the plot sharper with more twists and turns.
The genre isn't SO specific; the show is more or less a comedy, somewhat of a drama, and mostly a mystery/thriller. I classify it as Dark-Comedy/Drama/Mystery/Thriller.
TV Rating by MPAA: TV-14 for Violence, Sexual Content, and some language.
My Rating: 15+. Desperate Housewives has some very adult themes, and somewhat explicit depictions of domestic violence including a gruesome death of young girl, suicide, and murder. Though the sexual content isn't too bad, the language used is at a PG level. The harsh dark story line and the adult themes is the thing that should keep young viewers under 10 supervised with an adult.
Overall Grade: A-, brilliant story line, wonderful acting, and impeccable plot twists will keep this show going for years to come.
Running time-Approximently 1080 Min's. Color/Surround Stereo Includes Special Features such as commentary and Deleted Scenes Release Date: September 20th, 2005
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
'Sith' barely makes it past the satisfaction level
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005) Starring Hayden Christensen, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman and Frank Oz.
Revenge of the Sith starts out similar to 'Clones', two Jedi's blast in the screen with guns blazing and ships blowing up, yet again overdoing the CG to cover-up what seems an awkward choppy script with such bland dialog. The thing that was most bothersome was the characters deaths were so quick and unexplained, not to mention the forced 'love' that Christensen and Portman played throughout the film. Let's face it, Christensen cannot act. The whole movie it seemed like he was just saying his lines, not even showing any expression, which in a way is good, because when he did it was so embarrassing, I almost laughed out loud in the theater (not to mention the infamous scene when he cried "No" like Frankenstein did in the 40's.)
The good parts of the film were by far the most memorable events of all Star Wars films, including the scenes where the 'Sith' took over. Although the first 10 minutes were slow, they quickly pick up, then slow down until the 40 minute mark where Palpatine (McDiarmid) and Anakin share a very memorable scene that will remain controversial for years; and sent chills to the audience. After 45 minutes into the film, it remains to shine for the most part with a few exceptions like the 'love scenes' between Padme and Anakin, and not to mention the lame deaths of some important characters. Luckily, the storyline was so phenomenal that it would shine through all of its flaws, however many there was (countless).
The consistency was mostly the musical score, which Williams has NEVER let us down, his music shines brighter than all of those special effects used in the film. And yes, all the questions are answered in the film such as why Anakin turned to the dark side, and what happened to Padme, however they were so predictable that you mind as well have guessed it rather than spend two and a half hours in a movie theater just to find out. The only regret I would have is having better actors, and re-writing some of the dialog to make it more exciting, and not so childish or bland, and to give the well respected characters not such shawty death scenes.
Why four stars then? After all of this rambling about its flaws you would think I dislike it, however I personally thought that the 40 minute mark and beyond (besides a few minutes that made me gag) made up for it. It's near perfect, next time if they redo this, change the acting style, and fix up the crappy 'love' scenes.
Genre: Action/Sci-Fi-Fantasy/Drama Tech: Color, 140 Min's.
Rated: PG-13 for sci-fi violence and some intense images.
My Rating: 11+, Though some of the violence is strong, I think that without blood or gore it makes it less adult. There are a few strong emotional scenes, and some graphic violence (more towards the end of the film) that include be-headings, limb loss, realistic unflinching acceptance of death, and life changing injuries that are more vividly shown. There is a small sexual reference, some kissing, however no language or drug use/references.
Odd Girl Out (2005)
The real deal on High School
"Odd Girl Out" (2005) Alexa Vega, Lisa Vidal, Leah Pipes. 4.5/5.0 stars. When a girl (Vega) finds that her closest friends start to spread rumors and ruin her life she starts to break down to the hurtful and often harmful rituals of High School. Vanessa is your average girl trying to find herself in the world. She is friends with Stacey (Leah Pipes), the most popular girl in school, until Nikki (Elizabeth Rice) and Tiffany (Alicia Morton) sabotage her friendship with the queen bee and the clique. She is tortured throughout the school year until finally, the words start to get to her, and not in a good way. The school outcast, Emily (Perry) joins Vanessa on her quest to navigate through the dreadful everyday life that our teens go through everyday. My thoughts on it-This definitely hit the surface with a stone, and made some huge points that "Mean Girls" (2004) failed to point out. HIhg School may be the hardest times of our lives. Especially when your friends turn on you, and you are all alone in a teenage wasteland of betrayal, rumors, and raging hormones. This is the real deal. The secret life of girls is NOT pretty. What goes on behind our backs-Its one place where you cannot protect your children. Parents should know that this movie does contain some very dramatic elements to it. There is some very intense moments or drama and schoolyard insults such as slut, whore, or bitch. There is some sexual references made through out the movie. Children under 13 should have an adult or guardian around for some mild discretion.
Rated TV-14 for Strong language and thematic elements.
A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)
Awful! Jeez Gordon, you sure know how to turn things into sh*t!
I cant even explain how mad I am right now! He totally ruined it!
I am a huge Lemony Snicket fan, but this piece of crap that Mr. Gordon pulled out of his arse was terrible! I had a high expectation, I really hoped it would be as well as the books, but of course, I was terribly wrong! I think that the funniest thing about all of this is that it costed $125,000,000 to produce and it was only about 90 minutes long! The first three books weren't even followed very well! I mean the first book was covered in about 16 minutes. Throughout the rest, they continuously jumped throughout the 3 books and generally skipped PLENTY important parts that played a major key role in the story. The lamest thing I can think of about this movie is that the ending had the Baudelaire parents miraculously survive. I mean OMG, they are dead! The director, Mr. Silberling has yet again been proved untrustworthy, and would NEVER, EVER continue directing, especially for Robert Gorden, who was the main reason that this movie blew! He ruined "Men in Black", and now Mr. Lemony Snicket's books. I think that this could have been done a lot better with a different crew. The cast however, Brilliant! Although Mr. Carey wasn't my choice for Count Olaf, he was OK... I guess. There was still many flaws to be fixed. As for the screenplay... They left out about 3/4 of all the books, tossed the remains into a blender, put it on puree, then spread it about on a old cookie sheet and OVER cooked it.
1st part of the movie: Way way too short. They left out many parts that was very important especially how Violet saved Sunny from the tower. And weren't the Baudelaires suppose to meet Justice Strauss a few times? Well, thats Mr. Gordon for you Eh???
2nd part: Woah! It was way too rushed! Next time instead of combining 3 books, do us a favor and take time to appreciate ALL 3 of them for f*cking god sakes!!! Not only was the timing off, but all of the elements, including the kidnapping were deleted.
3rd Part: Started out as OK, It didn't seem rushed until the dinner scene was brought up. Then it was rushed. The lamest part was that the play "The Marvelous Marrige" was suppose to be in the first part, not after the 3rd. And I mean, how could they possibly rearrange everything and not expect the audience to be confused??
Overall: Count Olaf should have been crueler, less silly, more abusive, physically, and mentally. And he wasn't suppose to be captured, I mean Lemony (as Jude law) said clearly at the beginning that it didn't have a happy ending, but instead, Count Olaf made it to jail, and it seemed that they all took the books and took it in a completely different direction. DO NOT TRUST THEM, this movie is terrible, do yourself a favor and read the books, they are much, much, much better.
