World War Z (2013)
Fast, pacey but not scary
In todays 'Call of Duty' generation where viewers can't seem to go without action for more than 10 seconds, horror films have to be diluted into action spectacles. Removing the subtleties and tension that make films scary only creates a mindless action fest. World War Z follows Brad Pitts character as he travels around the world investigating the cause of a 'rabies' style outbreak which is turning people in fast, agile crazy people. The zombies themselves are more like rabid dogs, so calling them 'the undead' doesn't seem appropriate. The film relies on large CGI set pieces rather than tense and claustrophobic horror (although to its credit, the film does include some of this classic horror later on) In terms of characters, the film leaves them undeveloped and one- dimensional. There is potential, but the film would rather jump from place to place, feeding you the same formula each time without really giving you any deeper meaning or discussion.
World War Z suffers from what many generic action films do - a huge VFX budget and a bland un-engaging script, designed to wow audiences with a flashy look but leaving very little food for thought or substance.
Worms (1995)
How about ' Worms: the Movie'
Think about it. Such a fun but simple concept which has proved its success with so much attention and several sequels.
If there was ever to be a film of Worms it would be CG, of course, but could probably work with concepts used by the ledgendary 'Battle Royale'. You could have all the worms being thrown together and having to make friends, then being forced to kill each other and having to wait their go.
I know it sounds crazy but since Uwe Boll is already trying to make a movie of 'Pac-Man' with Jack Black, then how about they give something to video game adaptions that would be more accepted.
28 Days Later... (2002)
Complete and utter rip off.
Not only is this film boring and dull, but it is also no where near as original as everyone thinks.
The whole virus concept has been used millions of times- e.g.Resident Evil (i hate the film but I'm using it here as an example. The games are much better)so why does everyone think that 28 is so great? Also, this is NOT a zombie film. Zombies don't run and we are told that these people are infected with 'rage'. Yeah, we all feel like that sometimes don't we? These are called 'the infected' as if that gives them some sort of excuse... I am a student and i went for an interview at Salisbury College where i was told lots of people helped to make the 'zombies' for 28. See, people don't know what zombies are any more...
The whole storyline is ripped off a book called 'Plague' that i read in year 8 about the black death. It has the deserted London setting, and comes complete with a young girl coming home to find her parents dead in bed together having left her a note. Really Danny Boyle, Trainspotting was great but cant you be that original more often with your films? For my last point, everyone says how great the opening is with Jim coming out of the hospital and seeing deserted London, but I've got news for you. Its already been done! If you have ever seen 'Day of the Triffids' then you will know that the film opens with a meteor shower and then a man wakes up in a hospital with signs of chaos, things knocked over and glass broken, then he walks outside and finds that London is silent and deserted. He even walks past a bus lying on its side.
I think that if Danny Boyle wanted this film to be any sort of a tribute then he should have made it clear in the documentaries.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
Why cant these British directors just let a someone direct a film based on a game who knows what they're doing?!
What don't we know about Lara Croft? She first entered the small screen and all our hearts way back in 1996 and brought the genre of action gaming to a whole new level. Such a super sexy sleuth, wielding pistols and shotguns, able to leap across unfathomable crevices and battle with creatures from beyond our wildest imaginations! So with this in mind, British director Simon West decided to have a stab at making the much loved grave robber into a film. Okay, lets look at the basis of how a game adaption should go: 1.BASE IT ON THE GAME!!!! The idiot took Lara, her house and her pistols and inserted them into a plot (and an awful plot at that) attempting to drag the whole tomb raider story right up to date. Why bother inventing a whole new idea when you have 5 games with fantastic plots, deadly foes and action that we have all grown to love. The way this film (and so many other game adoptions) was made is the same as taking the 'Harry Potter' series and removing all the characters, settings and events from it, then taking odd bits from throughout the series and tossing the casually into the smelting pot to produce a pile of rubbish that is supposed to do it justice!! It doesn't make sense- your supposed to make a film OF the books. So why cant a GOOD director make the films of the legendary Tomb Raider series? Then maybe we can wipe away the tears and enjoy what should have been made so long ago. Maybe.....
Resident Evil (2002)
'A secret experiment. A deadly virus. A fatal mistake.' Yeah,it was a fatal mistake!
This review may contain spoilers. I have been playing the Resident Evil series for nearly as long as they have been around, and as my username suggests, i have a very large passion of them. Therefore i was horrified when the film was finally made. Not horrified by the 'horror' (loose term) but by the way it was made. For starters, there is no-one in the film who is actually from the game, and the settings are just as abstract. What a stupid concept. Surely the idea of making a film of a game is to actually BASE it on the game. Apparently not, according to Paul W.S Anderson whose track record includes 'Mortal Kombat' (not a bad film from a game adaption point of view) and the huge flop 'Alien Versus Predator'. The film is a complete insult to the games and should have been made by someone who knows what they are doing. Not play the games for 5 minutes then see what you can invent to be made into a film. Mila Jovovich ruins it to. The entire film is focused around her and what involvement she has with Umbrella. I can tell you that- NONE! She is the main character and yet is not in any of the games. In fact, she is getting married to Paul W.S Anderson and i have a strong reason to believe this has something to do with her role. Where were the S.T.A.R.S team? Or the hunters? A terrible film, yet being a film student it is my vow to write a better script and show the world what the fantastic story is all about. Before Paul W.S. Anderson does anything else (he is working on a third Resident Evil film).
