Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
They elevated the original Avatar, then crapped all over i!
When the movie started off, I was amazed at how the imagery and details are even more fabulous than the first one! Wow! But my delight was short lived. The moment the dialogues began, disappointment began to seep in.
The script, story and editing are such rubbish. I cannot even! Instead of leading us on a journey into this beautiful world of complex characters, they make us feel like we're in the middle of mediocre, cookie cutter Hollywood land. *sigh*
Whyyyyyy? There's so much potential with this series (yeah there are going to be three more sequels). I'm really, really hoping the writing quality in the next Avatar movie goes up to the level of the first one, or hopefully even surpasses it. Please.🙏🏽
I still give 6 starts because the visuals are so worth watching. So watch it. Just don't have any expectations from the story, acting and delivery. It'll save you some frustration.
Isanghan byeonhosa Woo Young-woo (2022)
Such a heartwarming series!
One of my favourite shows from the recent times. The responsible way they've covered the nuances of being an autistic person is very admirable of course. But it's the talent of the cast, writing and the warmth of the show as a whole that hits home.
So many cute and funny instances woven into a deep, moving storyline. Really one of the sweetest, thoughtful shows made!
I highly recommend giving Extraordinary Attorney Woo a try. Especially if you need a pick-me-up, but even otherwise. We all deserve to experience the kind good feelings generated by such well made content. :)
Needless to say, please watch it in its original Korean audio, with English subtitles.
Maa Ka Doodh (2023)
A must watch movie for all Indians who care about the future of our nation!
Normally I don't watch animal rights documentaries because they upset me and make me feel angry and helpless. I usually reason that anyway I know what's happening, so why subject myself to that energy again?
But somehow I made an exception for Maa ka Doodh after reading a friend's review about it. I'm so glad I watched it!
At first I thought I'd start a bit and stop if it's overwhelming, but OMG they've done such an excellent job of presenting everything! I just went all the way through it.
I'm really impressed at the research and the holistic way of showing how dairy just doesn't make any sense at all for - health, animals, environment, spirituality, or national security.
Instead of only pointing out the issues, the documentary provides hope and solutions too.
A lot of vegetarians believe they're not causing any harm. But the truth is dairy is a lot more cruel and harmful than meat.
I feel like everyone who watches this documentary with an open mind cannot help seeing the truth. The information is too compelling to ignore.
There are some painful, difficult to watch scenes. But no gratuitous gore. Only short clips that are enough to make a point.
Firefly Lane (2021)
Such a lovely show!
Firefly Lane is a beautiful series about powerful, unshakable friendship between two women across three decades of their lives. It's the kind of story that makes you crave for a friendship like theirs.
I love how they keep switching between timelines. Keeps the show feeling fresh throughout.
Both the leading ladies are brilliant of course, but the supporting cast also gives a very good quality performance.
The only drawback is that sometimes things get a tad too dramatic. But everything else about the show makes up for it. :)
Season one and two were absolutely binge worthy! Really looking forward to the next one.
Shantaram (2022)
Show's fantastic. But getting cancelled on a cliffhanger? Come on!
I'd normally have given Shantaram 9 stars for the quality, story, performance... all of it. It's a brilliant show with everything we can expect out of an Apple TV+ series.
You get completely invested in the characters and their stories. Which is why it freaking sucks that they decided to end the season on such a horrible cliffhanger.
Like, was that cliffhanger even necessary? Things could just as easily have been tied up together neatly.
And now the series is cancelled, which would've sucked in and of itself, but a cancellation after that kind of a cliffhanger is just criminal.
That's the only reason for the lower rating. To spare others from investing their time and emotions into a show that doesn't give them closure. *sigh*
This culture of ending seasons on cliffhangers should be banned! If there's no certainty for a top notch show like this to keep going, what hope do other shows have?
Ms. Marvel (2022)
Such a sad waste of potential!
The premise is really good, and so is the acting by the lead actors. Unfortunately terrible writing, direction, and editing messed it up beyond repair.
It's a really stupidly made show. And that's especially disappointing because it was nice to see brown people being represented responsibly.
I'm giving it 5 stars because of the really nice desi details, focus on partition, racism, etc.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
Never felt this good after watching a show about Murders! Haha
That title track, the acting, the vibes, the pace... such a great, well made series.
The background music is so enjoyable. It's perfect for the show.
Lovely to see Steve Martin and Martin Short after ages. Their best roles yet! Selena Gomez is perfect for Mabel's role. And of course it's always nice to see Tina Faye.
Can't wait for Season 2! Thanks for making such a lovely show OMITB team.
Younger (2015)
Started out so great, but what even were they thinking with that last season?!
So, I absolutely loved Younger when it started out. The wit, lightness, writing, acting...it was such a well done show. They call out so many issues and share very relevant information. It was brilliant!
But that last season was crappy to the point of undoing a the good work of the earlier ones.
It's not the main storyline that was the problem. That part was still great and I really like how they ended the story for Liza too. It was all the absolutely unnecessary, over the top fluff in there that effed things up big time.
Good lord! Half the times I was like "WHY??? What even is the point of showing all this and dragging on and on?"
The relevant material in whole season could've been neatly finished and tied up in about 9 episodes. That would've been a thing of beauty. But instead it was like they were stuffing each episode with more and more tangential drivel just to make it go on for longer.
So yeah, just say skip the last season and watch the rest of the show.
Derry Girls (2018)
So relatable and nostalgic. I think it's my favourite show!
As some who studied in an all girls school in the 90s, Derry Girls hits all kinds of emotional sweet spots for me. I see a bit of myself and my friends in all the characters.
But regardless of that, it's a freaking brilliant, hilarious show!
The acting, dialogues, writing, direction...everything is top notch. So beautifully done.
And of course the soundtrack is perfect!
This is the second time I'm watching the series and it's making me burst out in giggles as much as it did the first time around.
Thank you so much for creating this kind of show. I can't wait for season 3.
Haseen Dillruba (2021)
Stop glorifying abuse!
The movie is stupid, predictable, unrealistic, illogical and overly dramatic. All that might have been excusable and brushed off as mindless entertainment. But then they glorify abuse, and that's inexcusable!
He tries to kill her so many times and she just stays??? What kind of dangerous, twisted messaging is that?
Abuse is not love. Anyone who harms their partner is not a "good guy".
And just because she made the stupid mistake of having an affair with a complete jerk, doesn't mean she deserves to be physically and mentally harmed!
In a country where a large number of women suffer abuse and are killed by their husbands, a movie like this is extremely irresponsible.
Ajeeb Daastaans (2021)
Love the way these characters and stories are not the usual boring Black and White
Netflix is a pro at creating characters who're neither good or bad. They reside in grey areas. Flawed, selfish, but also loving, kind. The true nature of humans.
The acting is powerful! And as most people have said, Gheeli Pucchi and Ankahi are not up to be missed. Though the first two stories are well made too.
I can see why it's hard to digest for people who're used to the usual cookie cutter characters churned out by mainstream Bollywood or Hollywood.
If you get out of denial and sticking to colonial mindsets, and go back instead to our original, pre-British culture, you'll relate to these stories so much better.
Bombay Begums (2021)
Wow!
I started watching the show and am just a couple of episodes in and I'm hooked! Excellent performances and the direction, writing, storyline, everything is brilliant!
Netflix constantly seems to be airing top notch quality Indian shows. And they're not afraid to have nuanced and bold dialogues about women's empowerment issues.
Way to go Netflix and Pooja Bhat and the entire cast of Bombay Begums.
Teenage Bounty Hunters (2020)
I kept pausing to laugh!
This is such a funny show! The snappy dialogues and the pace of the show are both great. The acting (especially by the two lead characters) is brilliant!
Started watching it without any expectations. Turned out hilarious right from the first episode.
I can't understand why Netflix cancelled the show. I really hope someone else picks it up and we have many more seasons to cherish and laugh through.
Bhaag Beanie Bhaag (2020)
Fun, with some great nuances
Yet another well made Indian show on Netflix! Don't let the low ratings dissuade you from watching it.
It's all in the nuances. Indian Netflix shows are meant for the kind of person who appreciates the small but very important details in the dialogues and story.
This series yet again features an empowered woman and the pressures and micro aggressions she has to fight every single day just so she can do something she loves.
Beautiful acting. Light and funny. Really looking forward to the next season.
Dash & Lily (2020)
It's so cheesy but so different too! Hard to explain. Haha
Light, feel good story. Lovely acting. It might've been like any other predictable romantic comedy from the 90s or 2000s.
However, this one is completely refreshing, not least because of all the diversity and general woke-ness of the characters.
Even if you're bored of cliched Christmas stories, you'll enjoy this one! But if you're a fan of Christmas themed stories, then you're in for a treat with Dash & Lily. 😊
Kärlek & anarki (2020)
Love it!
I was under the impression that Norway, Sweden and such were capable of churning out only dark and depressing content. Then I discovered Love and Anarchy!
I enjoyed almost every about the show. The acting and nuanced facial expressions of the main actors especially are brilliant!
And the story demonstrates how you can highlight serious topics and difficult human emotions while still allowing the watcher to feel good and hopeful through it all.
Very refreshing. I can't wait for S2.
A Suitable Boy (2020)
The acting is everything!
It's a given that no movie or TV series can ever match its original book, so I'm very glad I haven't read the novel yet. I'm one of the lucky ones who could enjoy this series for its own merits, without comparison or prejudice. :)
Mira Nair as usual is a beautiful story teller. Anything she directs carries a certain unique charm and A Suitable Boy is no exception.
And I'm beyond impressed by the acting. Everyone was amazing.
I am especially impressed by Mahira Kakkar, the woman who plays the mom! What even are those expressions she can make? (My favourite is that fleeting pleading face when she says, "is he a Parsi?" LOL) So sweet! I had no idea who she was before this, but now I'm going to check out her other work too. I have to!
I binged the show in 2 days. You should too. :)
Masaba Masaba (2020)
Need more Indian shows like these!
Such an excellent series! The acting, writing, everything is so well done.
Don't trust the low rating (and the "chick flick" tag 🙄). The quality and content is on par with some of the best international Netflix shows, while also speaking to an urban Indian audience.
You need to be able to appreciate nuances and a natural acting style to enjoy it.
Nathicharami (2018)
Very progressive and out of the box storyline
I'm really proud to see a Kannada movie of this calibre. None of the usual commercial nonsense here. Just excellent acting by everyone and a unique storyline.
I was so impressed with the non judgemental way in which grey areas are covered in the story.
Kudos to every behind this movie! Looking forward to more films like this.
Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011)
Depth in simplicity. Beautifully uplifting film.
I have never bothered to write a review for any movie before but this one made me want to create an account on IMDb just so I could praise it.
There is a lot more to this movie than meets the eye. Though it appears to be a regular story about family and relationships, there is a much deeper meaning to Jeff, Who Lives at Home. It's all about that quote by Jeff at the beginning of the movie. Watching for the signs that the Universe sends us. There are many movies which deal with the cosmic plan aspect of life but what's remarkable about this one is that it is presented to us in this sweet and simple story. And that's exactly how these things work in real life too! The miracles are in the little things and all we need to do is to watch for them and allow that inner voice to guide us.
Jason Segal is just amazing! He's so sweet and sincere. Overflowing with kindness and optimism. I simply can't imagine anyone else playing the role of Jeff. He is absolutely perfect for it! That last scene where he's watching TV is so deeply moving. I had tears in my eyes as I watched his expressions.
I really liked all the other actors too. They played their roles so naturally. It wasn't at all like they were 'acting'.
I wholeheartedly recommend this movie to anyone who has an inclination towards spirituality.
I'm going to be talking about this movie and referring to it the way Jeff keeps referring to Signs. :)
Oh and I haven't watched Signs but because of this movie, it is now on my list.
