Meg 2: The Trench (2023)
It's Exactly How You Think It Will Be
I'll keep this brief, my opinion is most likely unpopular but I needed to vent somewhere.
The original Meg is probably in my top 5 most hated movies of all time. So out of spite to myself, I decided to sit through this one, purely because Ben Wheatley was directing. 5 minutes in and I knew then I made a big mistake.
Going into it, I kind of knew what I was getting myself into. I'm under no illusion that I'm watching a movie about a giant shark that only wants to eat people. Everything was bad, the CG on the sharks at some points was laughable, the dialogue was so cheesy it makes you uncomfortable. Things happen with no explanation as to why, Statham going for a swim 7 kilometres underwater with zero equipment was ridiculous.
Again I know what I'm watching but don't make it so implausible that it comes off as a joke. It felt like I was watching something from Asylum Studios that was made on a quarter of the budget. There were scenes that are literally taken from other movies but filmed badly. The final showdown was like watching a bad John Woo movie from 1995.
It's safe to say that I have tormented myself enough wanting these movies to be something they are definitely not, if there's a third, I'm not putting myself through the pain of watching it. But, like all movies, make your own mind up.
Evil Dead Rise (2023)
A Worthy Addition To The Evil Dead Legacy
As a massive fan of the original trilogy along with the 2013 sequel and the Ash Vs Evil Dead series. I was quietly holding my breath that this would be faithful to the storyline while having the gore and tension of the sequel.
I was not disappointed, once the book is found, it's non stop. The makeup and sound department went above and beyond to bring fans a hell of a bloody ride.
I can understand that it won't be for everyone, but if you are a fan of old school body horror you will have a great time. In a world full of CGI and green screens, it was a pleasure to sit and watch practical effects and sets used perfectly. A great addition to my favourite franchise and I hope they get to make more.
The Meg (2018)
So Incredibly Disappointing
First of all, I really, really wanted to love this movie, I went into it with positive thoughts and the hope of receiving that satisfying feeling of happiness when it was over.... how wrong I was.
If you are, like I was, hoping to see a great action horror movie with a giant shark destroying all in its path, well my friends, you are going to be greatly disappointed. Even Jason Statham couldn't save this pile of garbage from sinking to the depths of oblivion. It was a battle to actually sit through the entire thing. I don't think I enjoyed anything about it, from dialogue and jokes aimed at children, to Statham receiving relationship advice from an 8 year old girl in a subplot that was so incredibly cringeworthy and unnecessary to the plot I was completely embarrassed to continue looking. Along with moments of cgi that belong on the Syfy channel and a scene basically ripped directly from Jaws, It continued to get worse. The thing that annoys me with these particular films, especially when adapted from books, is that the premise and source material are there for the taking and time and time again we are given these crap movies that are nothing more than a waste of time. I understand it was never going to win any academy awards, but at least create something that I can enjoy from the word go. The Meg has now entered the list of my most hated movies of 2018.
Dredd (2012)
KARL URBAN IS DREDD
This is what the real Judge Dredd should look like on screen. Fantastic visuals and aggressive violence are pieced together perfectly from a script by Alex Garland. Every scene was executed brilliantly with a camera being designed with the specific purpose of showing the audience something we had never seen before, when the effects of the drug "Slo-Mo" start to kick in, and it is hard to forget.
Karl Urban is Dredd, he brings the character to life straight from the pages of the comic and is what many fans have envisioned him to be. Unlike Stallone's ego driven 1995 version of himself, Urban embraces the legacy of the character, while letting his talent speak for itself. Dredd is a tortured and tormented individual who shows no remorse for criminals while remaining a symbol of hope for the rest of humanity. Dredd was the movie all fans were waiting for, and it did not disappoint.
Let's hope we can get a follow up of some sort in the near future either on the big or small screen.
Fahrenheit 451 (2018)
Such a waste.....
As a massive fan of the novel, I was eager to see how it was going to be adapted using today's effects. What I got was a script that butchered the original storyline so much, I was confused as to what I was watching.
If I hadn't initially read the book, I wouldn't have a clue as to what the idea behind burning every book in existence was.. The main subject of the book was thrown away and what is left is a forgettable piece of film that all involved should be ashamed of. I'm only giving it 2 stars because I like the previous work of Michael Shannon. TRUST ME, READ THE BOOK! It's is more relevant now than it was when it was written.
Baby Driver (2017)
B-A-B-Y, Baby
Let's be honest, there are not many films made these days that you can say, " I can't wait to watch that again!". Then comes Baby Driver, a cool, clever, well written, beautifully acted piece of visual pleasure. Edgar Wright has used the skills of indie film making and produced something truly amazing. From the opening scene with driving that would make Vin Diesel's stunt man stop and stare, to the one continuous shot of baby going to buy coffee, absolutely incredible. Accompanied by the best soundtrack since Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown, Baby Driver is one of those movies that will never go out of style, and for me has joined the small list of classic movies that will always be welcomed viewing on my television screen.
Death Note (2017)
Death Note... Who's name would you write down...?
So first of all, I don't think I'm alone when I say, I don't care about the anime, source material that the story came from or the fact it's not an exact duplicate of the Japanese movies, why make the same movie again? (*cough REC / Quarantine *cough). I had never seen or heard of any of them before watching this version, so coming from an unbiased perspective, the movie was great! Acting was solid, it looked fantastic and the story, although at the start felt a little rushed, if you have half a brain you don't need 30mins of character development to get a movie such as this moving along. Willem Dafoe still, has never done wrong by me.. I always enjoy watching anything he does, even if it's only lending his voice this time around. I'm not going to rewrite the script on here and claim it as a "review" I'm simply going to give my recommendation to give Death Note a watch. Forget the haters who want to try and relate everything back to the original material (they are still residing in their mothers basements). Death Note is a new take on the story for a completely different audience, and they absolutely succeeded in doing so. Do yourself a favour and watch it, even if it's only for Dafoe. Who's name would you write down?
The Gracefield Incident (2017)
Tommy Wiseau Version 2.0
The Gracefield Incident... I don't usually write reviews, I'm more of a creepy scroll through kind of person, but this ladies and gentlemen is an exception.
To start off, I'm not going to basically regurgitate the script like most user reviewers on here. I'm simply going to explain my thought process while watch this 'film' (I use the term loosely here).
From the opening scene I knew I was in for an average journey of misplacing 90 minutes of my life. The lead protagonist and his iPhone camera supported eyeball was almost enough for me to turn it off and put it on the list of easily forgettable movies. Instead, I proceeded to endure. The acting was so bad, I thought to myself, 'this guy has to be the director, no one would have cast him otherwise'. So after a cheeky IMDb search, bingo! Writer, director and star Mathieu Ratthe. His laughable attempt at an American accent was irritating beyond belief, and this is coming from an Australian. The writing is terrible, with horrible dialogue, delivered by a group of people who couldn't get a job at local school production.
As it continued, I couldn't really put my finger on who the lead reminded me of, and then.... it hit me! Tommy Wiseau, the infamous creator of the now cult film 'The Room'. From the inaudible dialogue, to the over acting, to the scenes filmed in night vision that have been clearly film in daylight with a green filter added in post-production. I'm assuming this copycat of every other found footage film ever made will reach that status though.
In the end, what really annoyed me was the premise and idea was actually pretty good, I was excited to see it. Now that I have, I feel as though I have lost precious brain cells. If you feel the need to waste some time, by all means give it a go, but please fellow IMDBers, let me be your guinea pig. It hurt, and I don't want to go through it ever again!
The Boondock Saints (1999)
They just simply, walked away".
From the first time we see the brothers inside the church, listening to the priest tell the story of disgust, you immediately know that this is not just another failed attempt at a crude vigilante movie. Connor and Murphy are two Irish brothers fed up with the filth and injustice that is taking over the world, so they decide to take it into there own hands. Perfectly cast, with Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery as the Macmanus brothers bring a real heart and conviction to the at sometimes shocking story. David Della Rocco is amazingly brilliant by basically playing himself, and another (as always) shining performance from Willem Defoe as Detective Smecker. Writer / Director Troy Duffy has managed to create a world where criminals are the ones in fear and the good men rise above. I recommend The Boondock Saints to everyone, only to make you own assumptions on not only the movie itself, but on whether or not you be on there side.
