Independence Day (1996)
Will Smith playing a toxic male over-compensating yahoo.
Could have been a good movie, until the scenes with Will Smith start getting more screen time.
Jeff Goldblum does a fantastic job, as does the rest of the all-star cast.
I wish there were a way to just edit out the Will Smith scenes.
The tech is pretty awesome for the era. It is all done with models and real physics, not computer simulated physics. So things crash and burn in realistic ways.
There were many "end of the world" movies at the time and it is a fun genre, but this one is way over hyped and only continues to be relevant because it takes place around the July 4th holiday in the United States.
Black Mirror: Beyond the Sea (2023)
This episode is infuriating
Black Mirror has been so good, so often, it is hard to imagine how Beyond the Sea got greenlit. The script has so many holes in it that it should be called Taking on Seawater.
Two astronauts on a six year mission have zero friendship or chemistry. This is impossible. They should have solid unit cohesion... based on months of training together. Instead, they are like random roommates who found each other on craigslist.
Two astronauts are completely on their own to figure out how to handle a mid-mission tragedy. No support from ground control.
Two astronaughts, on a high-profile mission, have zero security for their replicas and their families on Earth. And, most unbelievably, after one of the families is murdered by members of an anti-technology political cult, the other family does not receive increased security.
It is not character driven. The plot has holes. What about the technology? They can send consciousness across galactic distances to a replica. Well, if they could do that, why not send the replicas into space and let the astronauts stay safe at home?
It is all too much.
Still Alice (2014)
Deserves every award it got.
Everything is great about this film. Writing, Directing, Camera. But the Acting stands out above all. Just superb. Bravo.
Infinite (2021)
Interesting premise does not live up to its potential
People who can clearly recall their prior lives. Such fertile ground for interesting exploration. Instead we get nothing but car chases and fight scenes.
Santa Clarita Diet (2017)
Fantastic cast - Great show running
First the cast. Timothy Oliphant and Drew Barrymore have fantastic timing. Their humor is fall off the couch funny. Skylar Gisondo is superb as are the actors in other character roles. Yet, amidst all this, Liv Hewson stands out. Every scene she is in sparkles. Congrats all.
I managed to string this show out, because I knew I would be sad when I reached the last episode. It was always great to come back and soak in a few episode and re-enter the Santa Clarita world.
Kidding (2018)
Mental health breakdowns are not this much fun
Let me first say, the acting in this show is fantastic. Jim Carrey, Judy Greer, the whole cast is great.
The writing is irresponsible crap. The main character is clearly suffering from severe mental health issues and, in spite of the fact that he has a hospital wing named for him, he never sees a doctor for his condition. His family controls him, and worry about him, but never seek help for him.
As he randomly flips from mild-mannered children-show host to an increasingly unwell person suffering from what might be PTSD, scizophrenia, or a severe personality disorder, we get meager hints of his violent past.
The acting carried me through to the end of season 1, where I was left horrified.
