This really is a gorgeous movie, Weta FX have done amazing things in the years since they were first founded (though, admittedly, The Frighteners is the earliest movie they worked on that I've seen so far) and their work here just shows why they're considered one of the greatest VFX houses in film today. The detail in their apes, the nuances of facial expressions that they've captured and recreated, EVERYTHING they've done here is incredible, and there is nothing on any of the actors' performances that lets them down at all.
The story, though, did disappoint just a little. However that may be because I couldn't help wishing we'd got just a little more of Caesar's story and his family's story. I actually had the rare experience of going into this knowing NOTHING about the movie except that it was set some generations after Caesar died, and that it would somewhat mirror certain aspects of the 1968 original. I have to say, it was kinda refreshing? It was also a little distracting, though, because I kept wondering what the bigger picture was that this movie would fit into. So for that reason, it's really my own fault that I probably didn't enjoy it as much as I normally would have.
Don't make that mistake. Check your expectations at the door and enjoy, because it really is a thoroughly enjoyable movie, and an incredibly gorgeous one.
