In Memoriam (2018)
An outstanding allegorical short movie
In Memoriam, directed by the very promising young director Gustavo Dourado and Thiago Campelo is a poetic movie, maybe a little difficult to follow but with much beauty in its poetry.
As the title says, the movie is about death, memory and nostalgia. It starts with the death of a filmmaker called Lucas Benevides, who won the first Oscar award to Brazil. Some characters act with sorrow when they hear that news, in the radio station. Along the movie other character dies and more people feel pity and think about the inexorable truth that everyone has to die.
But life is cyclical and every day a lot of people die, however a bunch of childen are born. This idea traverses the whole movie.
Actors are stupendous, the cinematography is spetacular and all technical details are perfect, something rare in brazilian short movies.
Legalize Já: Amizade Nunca Morre (2017)
Biography of an oustanding, but mostly unknown, character of Brazilian Rap
The movie title is not very good, since it is not about marijuana or legalization. It is about two rap artists who meet: Marcelo D2 (Renato Goes) and Luiz Skunk (Ícaro Silva) and how they manage to begin a rap/raggamuffin band called Planet Hemp, which was pretty inovative, at least in Brazil 1990's.
The photography shows a gray Rio de Janeiro without postcards, except by the arcs of Lapa, that helps to depicte a city with a lot of prejudice against black and poor people where there is police violence and truculence.
Besides than telling how a band was formed, the film is about how the character Skunk inoculates some thoughts and values inside Marcelo D2, that until now has sound solo career. Those values and thougths were already inside Marcelo but they only came out after his meetings with Skunk. Of course they are often smoking marijuana, what is forbidden in Brazil until now.
Very nice acting by Ícaro Silva and Stephan Nercessian, who plays Marcelo's father.
I missed anything about the other band members such as Gustavo Black Alien and B. Negão.
I won't analyze further because I don't want to create spoilers since it is the first review here.
O Outro Lado do Paraíso (2014)
Beautiful story with some plot problems
The movie is filmed in the countryside of Brazil and also in the capital, Brasília. The story is about a 12 year old boy, Nando, who is played by an first-timer Davi Galeano, that couldn't make a good acting. In other hand, the girl who acts as his colleague, Iara, Maju Souza, is also a first-timer but does an excellent job.
There are some things that I didn't like in the movie. The first is the presence of a narrator, who sometimes tells us something we could understand only by watching the movie. The need for explaining things is, maybe, a trace from the Brazilian television dramarturgy.
The other problem is the soldier, that in the year of the plot, were semi-illiterates, many of them could barely read. But in the movie the soldier knows about communism and socialism. It is very unlikely.
The good points are the images filmed in the early years of Brasilia (my city) who are well placed throughout the movie. It is also a very nice production for the budget and the other actors are very well.
In summary, it is a beautiful story but the script still had some problems that difficult one's immersion in the plot.
Sal de Prata (2005)
Digital video against film
Veronese (Marcos Breda) is a cinema director that has only made short movies, but is somehow respected among his colleagues. In the initial scene there is a discussion in a movie competition, if they should accept digital movies or only 35mm films. Veronese argues that nowadays they should encourage new people to make movies, and accept video movies. In other hand, one director says that a movie to be a movie there must be film, there must be silver salt (Sal de Prata). This discussion will be well developed throughout the movie.
Veronese has a heart attack, in a poor acting, during the discussion. His notebook has some parts of a long movie script. Several of his fellow directors want to appropriate of these scripts, because Veronese is somehow a respected writer, although he is not famous or recognized.
With good performances of both Maria Fernanda Cândido and Camila Pitanga, the plot develops very well, because Veronese played not so well by the experienced Marcos Breda, tells her before his death, that he had a daughter aged 18.
Maybe there is some exaggeration with the love betrayal because at some point it seems that everyone had sex with everyone, but as the story goes you notice that is not quite true.
When his daughter, played by unknown actress Julia Barth, appears, the film turns more interesting. She works as a video editing in a countryside city of Rio Grande do Sul (south region Brazil).
I will not spoil the movie but I liked a lot the last fifteen minutes. In the end, the credits says that the script was part of the Sundance Festival laboratory. Maybe that's why this movie is so intriguing.
Surprisingly very good. This movie didn't achieve much box office or awards, but, in my humble opinion, deserves 9 out of 10.
Area Q. (2011)
Good story in a beautiful city
I am not a sci-fi addicted, nor an UFO believer, though this story interested me a lot. The plot is about a famous reporter whose son has disappeared in Los Angeles.
He must return to work and his boss sends him to Brazil, specifically, Quixadá, a town in the state of Ceará, in the northeast region. The city is small, but has some beautiful spots, as the rocks and the very nice dam (it is a semi-arid land).
The plot starts and has some good turning points but has some holes, which I will not detail to avoid spoiling.
The acting of Isaiah is good and Murilo Rosa is well in the role of Joao Batista, but they used the same actor to play the father and the son, what I think is a terrible choice. We don't believe the character of his son, because is played by the same Murilo Rosa. In this role he is not convincing.
The special effects are very good and they don't appear until the middle of the movie, which I think an excellent choice.
The soundtrack is sometimes over the needed, but I didn't think it was all too bad. What I really disliked was the edition/montage. Some important takes were given just few seconds while others banal where given much more emphasis.
Other bad choice is the constant voice over, by the main character, which is most of the time too explanatory and could be avoided. It was needed, if so, only in rare occasions.
I liked id because it is different than the usual Brazilian latest movies, only about favela or shallow comedies. And it shows a nice piece of land that, as long as I remember, has never been portrayed before.
Billi Pig (2012)
Horrible movie. Money waste.
The director José Eduardo Belmonte has made some good movies, and some bad movies. But this one distunes from all others in his career. Maybe he tried to make money with this movie, which will absolutely fail.
The plot is the main problem of the movie, but the edition is bad, the sound effects are poor and the Direction of the actors is terrible. Belmonte had good experienced actors such as Milton Gonçalves, Selton Mello and Murilo Grossi, but they all play anecdotal characters, far from reality.
The premiere of Grazi Massafera in the cinema can't be considered, because her character is too bad, and probably it was directed in that way. So we can't blame her for the odd acting.
The movie lacks cohesion and the special effects are also bad, especially the duck one. The original music score is good, and the cinematography is reasonable.
In the first scene I thought it would be a children movie, but it isn't. There are gunshots and curse words that makes it inappropriate for children.
Unfortunately this is a very bad movie, from one Director of the same city of mine. Don't watch it.
400 Contra 1: Uma História do Crime Organizado (2010)
A spoiled chance to film a great story
The movie is about the early creation of the biggest criminal organization in Brazil, the "Comando Vermelho" (Red command). The movie is inspired in the book of William da Silva, played very well by Daniel de Oliveira (Cazuza). It is an outstanding REAL story, very interesting.
Unfortunately the acting, besides Daniel and a couple of other actors, is poor, with some unknown actors that didn't convince as captain Werneck.
There are also other problems such as the confusing editing, coming back an forth between 1980 and 1970 too many times, complicating the understanding of the movie.
Another flaw is the prison. There are three groups in the jail, and each group had too many characters and they all had the same appearance, so that the spectator has difficulties in distinguishing the gangs. And sometimes one gang member murders another and we don't know the reasons nor which gang was fighting other gang.
Some prisoners are killed by the guards while trying to escape, and another, Baiano, for the same reason only has his head shaved, and the movie makes it a huge punishment. (I prefer bald then dead.) This sequence is terrible, as is the one when other gang members with bald heads protest in the refectory.
The budget is not 400 million, it is incorrect in this site.
Concluding: They had the chance of making a great movie, with an amazing story but made only an average film.
Histórias Que Nossas Babás Não Contavam (1979)
Guaranteed laughs
The movie is a parody of Snow White and the seven dwarfs, very funny indeed. The plot is similar to the famous tale, except Snow White, in this case Clara das Neves, is the king's daughter with an African queen, who died already. The actual queen is malignant just like the original tale.
Clara das Neves is played by the stunning Adele Fatima, famous mulatto model and actress with a superb body. The queen is also very beautiful and there are many hot scenes.
This movie is a classical of the "Pornochanchada" genre. Although there is much prejudice about this genre, I like it very much. It is not pornographic, it is just an erotic comedy, without explicit sex scenes. Sometimes you get excited and sometimes you laugh, and better, sometimes you laugh while excited.
Despite many technical problems such as sound, the movie is well resolved. The plot is in its essence very funny, as the original Snow White story is subverted in an erotic tale. The virgin princess Clara Das Neves is deflowered by a bankrupt Prince who had an affair with the queen, who is Clara das Neves' stepmother. The Queen's mirror keeps telling her that her stepdaughter is prettier and younger than she.
The highlight of the movie is when the Queen calls the hunter, played by Costinha, an memorable humorist who passed away a few years ago. His scenes are so good that make you understand why he became part of the history of Brazilian comedy.
The director is also very famous and made more then 50 movies, most of them in the Genre Pornochanchada.
Grab your girl and enjoy this funny movie.
Mulher, Mulher (1979)
An erotic and psychological drama
This little Brazilian production of 1979 is quite a good movie. The photography is simple and so does the sound track, with good instrumental music. The actors seem to be dubbed in studio, which guarantees a good sound, however sometimes it is out of sync with the image.
Besides technical imperfections, the plot is very interesting. Alice (Helena Ramos) is a recent widow, married to a psychiatrist interested in sexual issues of the mind. She finds his audio tapes and listen to it, which contains some psychiatrist sessions recorded. She is strongly influenced by the recordings and start doing things just like her husband's patients.
It has some hot erotic scenes, as any other Brazilian movie of that time. Helena has a stunning body, very natural, different than the actual pornographic women, who have an artificial shape. There are two controversial scenes with a horse, what rose polemics at the time of the release. But notice that it is not only a sexual relation with the horse, she really loves the horse Jumbo, and is jealous about this relationship. She said in an interview that the trick to the horse lick her, was pouring a mint cream over her body.
The drama of her sexual psyche is very thrilling and is the high point of the movie, like the erotic (not pornographic) scenes. There are also some poetic scenes, very beautiful and surprising, and I didn't expect it.
It's a good movie, 7 out of 10.
It shows often in "Channel Brasil" and is sold in the internet (a pirate copy).
Federal (2010)
Brazilian federal police investigation movie.
The story is about a Brazilian police crew, composed of Federal, Military, and Civilian policemen (Brazil has different police forces). They try to take down an international drug dealer, called Beque. To do so they have the help of a DEA agent, played by Michael Madsen.
The plot scenery is Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, a city in the mid-west of the country. But Brasilia does not have the drug problem as it is in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, and some shooting scenes seem quite unlikely.
Although the police has helped in many scenes, the production of the action scenes are not very realistic and aren't so exciting as the famous Brazilian movie Elite Squad. Federal is a smaller production and the technical details are not so sophisticated. In some scenes the image looses focus and some actors with smaller roles are not very well prepared to movies. Too bad that the superb actor Andre Amaro has only a small role, as the reverend.
Unfortunately the plot has some small holes, but the overall of the movie is good. In my opinion the end makes a counterpoint with the ending of Elite Squad I.
The original music, by the experienced Eugenio Matos, is very well done and works fine, with the use of some Brazilian sonority instruments.
O Contador de Histórias (2009)
Wonderful story. Beautilful movie
The movie is based on a true story, the life of Roberto Carlos Ramos, a poor kid that went to FEBEM, the children's penitentiary in Brazil. FEBEM, also present in the Babenco movie Pixote, is an institution that worked (it is now extinct) both as a jail and as a home to poor child. But this institution had more kids that they could handle, and no kid is well treated there. Therefore Roberto Carlos escapes this institution and start living in the streets, struggling to survive.
One day he meets a french pedagogue woman that takes care of him. I had already seen this story in an interview of Roberto Carlos in Jo Soares (this is in you tube) so I knew the story, but even though it was a great time seeing this movie. I realized as the narrator is the true Roberto Carlos himself.
Some scenes that are about the memories of Roberto Carlos childhood use a fictional scenography, very poetic as is reminds the child's imagination and vocabulary.
The acting is good, good production, great casting, some funny scenes, story is superb, and REAL! Very nice, touching movie that I recommend to you all.
If you have already seen it and liked, I recommend you one harder movie that you might like: Pixote - A Lei do mais fraco.
Salve Geral (2009)
He lost a great opportunity of making a great movie
The movie is about the killing spree that São Paulo passed through in 2006. More than 40 policemen were killed, many others civilian and a lot of criminals, and innocent people that the police said were criminals.
This rebellion is one without equals, a very rare case, where the authorities had to negotiate with the criminals. But in the true story, they negotiate through a woman attorney, that is present in the movie plot (ruiva) but not quite like the true story. This case has been deeply studied by the press and the authorities, and it could be more realistic, in my opinion. In fact if it were more realistic more people would have watched and the movie would be much more interesting.
They could explore more the situations inside the penitentiaries, but instead the character Rafa leaves the jail and keeps doing stupid crimes, like burning a dressing store, which seems quite implausible.
I found that the lawyer Lúcia, main character, very unlikely would fall in love with one criminal inmate. And the scene where she tattoos a snake in her breast is really unlikely and is totally dull, unneeded, without any consequences. I thought her son would see this tattoo and ask about it, but NOTHING happens.
The acting of some actors, like the characters HD and public security secretary is very poor, irritating.
But as the plot is very very interesting, and the movie is well produced, I give 7 out of 10 to this nominee candidate to the Oscar of Foreign Language by Brazil.
Revolutionary Road (2008)
Hopeless emptiness
The drama is about a couple played by Leonardo Di Caprio and Kate Winslet. When he meets her (April) he already says he works only for the money, without any passion. She, in other hand, dreams to be an actress.
But she is not talented and her career doesn't emerges. Every problem they have, the man starts some discussion and the woman tries to avoid it, in contrary to the usual, a typical change of roles.
Years later he keeps working in an unpleasant job while she is a housewife with two children. They live a tepid life without any big emotion and both keep fighting each other.
But one day, after a big fight where he seems very angry, April finds a photograph of him in Paris and a dream rises. She convinces him to go live in Paris and they tell everybody in town. Nobody seems to understand this immature idea, except the psychotic man called John. He is the one that understand the hopeless emptiness that rule their hearts. However it seems that the emptiness is stronger in the woman than in the man.
The woman than acts like an actress in her real life. In her last breakfast she is a great actress and the husband really enjoys it, even though I think he could realize that she wasn't being real, because of her great coldness.
After the movies end, I kept asking myself if I were in his skin, if I would have gone to Paris. This decision was foolhardy but I think he could convince his wife to go on vacation first, or something like that. He couldn't just say her plan, her dream was silly.
The main problem between the couple is that April dream about glamour and Frank was more realistic, more grounded.
Something I liked very much in the movie is the acting of Kathy Bates and the fact that she smokes a lot, even when pregnant. That was realistic because the time of the movie is around the fifties.
Something I didn't like in the movie was that even though they are parents of two children and some of their problems is because of them, the kids rarely appear in the screen. Other thing I didn't like was the scene he tells her wife that he has cheated on her.
But overall I liked because the movie makes you think. Sam Mendes is really nice.
Nome Próprio (2007)
Poetic and literary
The story is about Camila, a young alcoholic woman that writes an internet blog. Her blog seems to have several followers.
She has many relationships throughout the story, all of them pretty troubled. And the sex scenes are rough, in my opinion too detailed, which I found exaggerated.
The acting of Leandra Leal is very convincing and has gave her two awards. She is actress since childhood in Globo Television. After her two most famous performances in "Cazuza" and "The Man Who Copied" she performs her most challenging character and this consolidates her as one important actress in Brazilian cinema.
The total budget is clearly very cheap, as it was filmed in digital cameras and the scenarios are not very sophisticated. The great value of this film is in the artistic way the scenes are shot. There is also quite a poetry influence in the text of Camila's stories which one may find beautiful.
But the movie is not quite entertainer, and does not keep your attention during the whole movie. In fact after so many Camila's relationships you don't differ one partner from other and her behavior seems quite dull.
So if you don't mind watching cheap movies, I recommend it to you because of Leandra's stunning acting and the artistic text that is written on the screen. It happens as people type their text in e-mails or blogs on the internet.
Lula: O Filho do Brasil (2009)
Very nice true drama story.
The story is about the life of Brazilian President (2003-2010) Luis Inácio Lula da Silva. But the movie doesn't concern politics, since it ends before he becomes a politician. It is a humanistic story, very sad, based on a true story present on the book with the same name of the movie. It is always very touching to see that someone who suffered that much could end being a president.
However, there are some corny scenes, very unlikely true. Moreover, Lula's father is shown very very mean, and Lula has told he was bad, but not that much.
The acting of Gloria Pires I found very nice, but the child actors are not well prepared. And the main actor, Rui Ricardo Dias is never shown with his left hand open, which kind of annoys me. I think they should have used some special effects to hide his little finger (which was severed), since it is a production of 9 million dollars, the most expensive ever made in Brazil.
When Lula is already a syndicalist, there are some real scenes that were taken from the excellent documentary "Linha de montagem", of Renato Tapajós. But the cinematography is different between these scenes and the filmed now, so it seems a little strange, but it is comprehensible.
The one fact that really annoyed me is the credits mixed with the story in the beginning. This irritated everybody in the theater and is very unpleasant.
But what matters most in a movie is the story, so how the story is outstanding, the movie is 8 out of 10. The movie "2 Filhos de Francisco" from Breno Silveira is very similar to this, but in my opinion, better directed. And those who likes Lula's biography should also watch the documentary "Entreatos", from João Moreira Salles.
Loki: Arnaldo Baptista (2008)
Very crazy life
The movie is a documentary produced by the Brasil Channel about the great personality of Arnaldo Baptista, the most creative member of the music band "OS MUTANTES". The trio begun in the 60's with him, his brother Sergio and his wife Rita Lee. Rita did not appear in the movie and she says she will never talk about the past with OS MUTANTES.
This fact even leads to an idea that she was responsible for Arnaldo's sadness and craziness and the end of the band. Indeed, she seems to be the bad girl.
The movie has comments of friends and critics, besides Arnaldo's own comments and his brother Sergio. The movie is chronologically organized and mixed with some pieces of concerts, but it never show a whole song, which I found good. My only critic is that when OS MUTANTES are shown performing, they are mostly singing Caetano Veloso's songs, like "Panis et Circensis" and Baby, but Caetano is not mentioned in this movie.
As many cine-biographies, it is a good movie mainly because the life or Arnaldo is very very interesting. If somehow you like rock, or psychedelic music you must see it. Includes the comment of Kurt Cobain telling he loves "OS MUTANTES".
Ódiquê? (2004)
Good movie, but the plot has problems
The movie is not as bad as the others commented here in this site. Maybe the commentarists are too old. I am young like the characters in the movie and I perfectly understood the dialogs and the situations exposed.
The story is about three youngsters from Rio de Janeiro that have no money and want to play carnival in Arraial D'ajuda, a paradisiac beach in Bahia. Many young people don't like the carnival in Rio de Janeiro and find more exciting in other places, as is said in the movie: to see and kiss other girls. But without money they cannot go.
As they smoke marijuana, they have an idea to steal small drug dealers, and manage to do it and earn 150 reais. This is the first plot problem, because it is really very very dangerous and nobody would have this stupid idea, because behind a small drug dealer there is always a big drug dealer.
Later they call another friend, son of a congressman to join their group. In Rio de Janeiro there are some youngsters that feel exciting in committing crimes, not for the money, but just because of the adrenaline. So they start committing crimes, until someone has an idea to kidnap some other person. This is the main gap in the plot, because it is not well explained and doesn't make sense at all.
Beside the story problems, the dialogs are very funny and very alike to youngster cariocas that smoke marijuana. The character Tito (played by Cauã) seems to be high during the whole movie, which can be somehow annoying but also very funny.
There is a scene where he humiliates a black retarded boy. It is very cruel, but the movie doesn't turn worse because of it. If it was true, some Hitler and Holocaust movies could never be shot. It is a shame that some dialogs cannot be understood because of bad sound mix, but the quality is better than "Cama de Gato", a movie that looks like Ódique.
I think that for a first movie, it can be considered a success for Moretzsohn. Hope he returns with even better movies, for the good sake of Brazilian cinema.
A Noite das Taras I (1980)
Three episodes with sex and fun
This movie is composed of three episodes independent. All episodes are shot in São Paulo and the main characters are sailors that landed at the Santos port.
The first episode is "A carta de Érico" or, in a free translation, Erico's letter, directed by John Doo. It is quite artistic, and the woman has a very good acting. But there is only one sex scene that is not very hot. The plot is a little unlikely, but it has a cohesive story.
The second episode, "Um peixe dentro d'agua" is directed by Davi Cardoso, maybe the greatest pornochanchada masculine star, who doesn't acts in this movie. This one is starred by Matilde Mastrangi, the greatest female pornochanchada actress. There are a lot of sex scenes, very hot and quite funny. The bad part is the dubbing of some actors with caricature voices.
The last episode is the funniest, directed by Ody Fraga where the sailor meets six hippie girls that try to kill him by having sex with him. The makeup is good, the sex scenes are very well directed and the acting is very good, leading to laughs at the sailor that has his finale like many men would like to have.
Though it is nos a masterpiece nor a sophisticated plot, I recommend you to watch it, mainly if you like the pornochanchadas, or erotic comedies.
As Seis Mulheres de Adão (1982)
A simple plot with hot scenes
The movie is about one man, called Adão, played by Davi Cardoso, who is a women dangler. Davi Cardoso is also the director of this and many other movies of the so called gender "pornochanchada".
In the movie, Adão is rich and strong, and makes sex with a lot of girls. He has sexual relationships with six girls, each one is minutely shot. It is not a pornographic movie like the actual ones found in the internet, it is quite different, not only by the story, but also by the way it is shot. Only in the first scene there is explicit sex, the others are simulated (or seems so).
The comedy has great laughs, most of them during the sex scenes. But the serious acting is poor, not spontaneous, seems to be forced.
As the pornographic aspect of the movie the actresses are hot, but Davi Cardoso is very narcissistic, and many sex scenes focus on him, which is very unpleasant for male audience. There are a couple of shots that causes disgust like the scene he receives massage from a gay butler, or the one the camera focus on his flaccid dick.
If you are man and want to watch it, see it in DVD because you may fast forward some scenes.
Querô (2007)
A criminal child with no future
The movie is about a teenager, Querô, who is raised by a pimp woman, owner of a whorehouse, after his mother died on childbirth. The old woman treats him badly and he doesn't have the opportunity to get proper education.
To earn some money, and looking for some status, he enters the crime world. One day he is arrested and goes to the FEBEM, the old Brazilian prison for children and teenagers (the same of the Pixote movie).
The plot is interesting, and he suffers a lot, in a verisimilar way, but sometimes the dialogs are not spontaneous, not natural.
Mainly the Querô's monologues are quite forced. The main character is a teenager without education, but still though he philosophize about life in quite an intellectual way, as if he were an experienced adult.
The actors are good and the movie is well directed, except by the fight scenes that are shot too close.
This movie gets 6 out of 10, but if you want to watch a masterpiece on the same theme, you must see "Pixote, a lei do mais fraco".
As Vidas de Maria (2005)
A simple drama with an interesting plot
This movie tells the story of Maria, a girl that is born in the same day Brasília city is inaugurated, April 21 of 1960. Her father was a "candango", how is called the people who built the city. Her mother dies on child-birth. Her father can't find job after the inauguration of the city and goes to the north region of Brazil to build the Transamazonica road. But he doesn't abandon her daughter, instead of it he leaves her with her godfather, a black man that works as chauffeur to a congressman. As the girl Maria grows, different actresses play her role, with highlights to Sthephany Britto, Brazilian new sex symbol, which was just a child, but was already very beautiful. Although the plot is interesting, with a lot of conflicts between the characters, somehow the dialogs are not very natural and often sound a little corny. Some crying scenes, like the one Maria goes to her mother grave, does not touch the viewer, because there is no relation created between Maria and her mother. The movie has good scenes of Brasília, the Brazilian capital, but some characteristics of the early years of the capital weren't truthful, along the time, like the cathedral that was not white, only being painted in the early 90's.
Germania anno zero (1948)
The nazism description after the war
This movie is a masterpiece. Some other movie critics may tell you better what is neo-realism and such things. I will not do it, instead I will tell you why I liked so much this movie.
In the beginning of the movie, the voice of Rosselini says: Something must be done to change what these German kids think of life, or else they will love nobody. The kid (main character) has only seen terror and misery his whole life. Before the end of the war, his father tried to take his name of the Führer youth, but the kid betrayed his father saying that the document was false. He did it because all the society, including his teacher (Herr Enning) was pro-nazism.
The housekeeper, Herr Kanengaard says that it would be better the kid's father die, because he is sick. The father says he should die, because he is sick and tired of being a obstacle in their lives. Finally the teacher says that it would be better if the father died, and starts preaching the same concepts that made nazism kill millions of people during the war. That the young and health should eliminate the old and worthless. The stronger must subdue the weaker, that's how nature works. Then the kid poisons his own father. That's what I found genial in the movie, Rosselini shows the perversity of nazism, even after the war, without any cannon or bullet fired, without showing any concentration camp.
Later Edmund shows to be just a child, running and playing, and he did only what he was told to do, but now the teacher said he is a monster. He keeps playing and fooling around, but then when he realizes the suffering he would have the burden of his life would be too heavy to carry, he kills himself. That's the time when I shivered and cried.
Boca de Lixo (1993)
A stunning and impressive movie.
This movie is a documentary that comes as extra in the "Peões" DVD, by Eduardo Coutinho. The director began in the "Globo Reporter" TV show in Globo, Brazil and then started filming pictures.
The picture begins with a garbage truck dumping trash in the big trash terrain near Rio de Janeiro. People start struggling for the most valuable trash, which are food, metal and plastic. Scenes of young child eating trash is really shocking and if you don't have enough guts you may even throw up. Do not eat popcorn while viewing.
It is pretty intriguing to see that people get used to the trash, like an old man who tells that if he stays one week far from the garbage, he have to go there on Sunday to smell it. Yikes! It is also stunning to see the mother that was born in there and has already seven kids. Moreover, she and his husband say that they want twelve, and maybe "if God sends" even eighteen children. In one way it may show like irresponsibility, but in other hand it shows courage and bravery of that poor people, who sees happiness and joy in the children. Should be example to rich people.
By the way, this movie is much better than "Peões".
Entreatos (2004)
Excellent movie, a funny documentary with serious theme
The movie was filmed during the presidential elections in 2002, both first and second turn. The movie was filmed in miniDV. The president appears in a way that he had never shows up before. He smokes his cigarillos and always has a beer in hand when he is not working.
He says he doesn't like military forces, he tell bad things about his opponents and speaks a lot of bad words. Seeing this movie you realize that he is really an unique president, like no other in the history of Brazil, or many others countries. His friends and politic Allies are also showed in the picture with very much reality.
Of course everybody saw the camera, but even though, they acted different than they would act on television cameras. In the campaign it is clear the importance of the marketeer. A person that can change the result of the elections, and change the future of the country. It takes to another discussion: should the people vote for the best politician or the best marketeer ?? Anyway, it is a raw look at the high politic campaign. And for bonus, it is very funny, because the president Lula is very funny.
You must see it !!
Bar Esperança (1983)
A delicious comedy with much alcohol
This comedy passes in Rio de Janeiro, mostly in a bar. Ana is a soap opera actress and Hugo Carvana, her husband is a frustrated writer that doesn't like to write to television. The most funny is their two children, Yury (Jonas Torres), that follows Yuri Gagarin and another girl.
I won't tell so much about the story because it will ruin your movie session. I just say that it has a little of society appeal and also some questions about what is art. You can see it in the character played by Anselmo Vasconcelos, Salvador daqui. Oh, and there is a brilliant strip-tease.
I recommend it, principally for the not brazilians, that will have a good vision of the cotidian of Rio de Janeiro.
