Storyline

The real story behind the creation of the Comando Vermelho (Red Commando), the powerful criminal organization that terrorized Rio de Janeiro for several decades. The movie follows William, who is sent to a notorious prison island during the military regime, and there he befriends other criminal people like him and also many political prisoners of the place, full of ideologies and demanding better conditions in the place. Soon, what started as a movement dealing with improvements behind bars became a violent group that escalated outside of prison, with members involved in criminal acts, robberies, murders and spectacular jailbreaks. Quotes

[last lines]
William da Silva Lima: Peace, justice and freedom. That's the slogan we created and is still used on the Red Commando slums. But it's peace to the collective, our comrades of suffering. Justice is that we have our own law. And freedom, it's the freedom of jumping the walls, of escaping at any cost.

Don't expect it to be any closer to City of God or Elite Squad!

It's hard to follow the story and sometimes you're under the impression that there's something wrong, since you can't really connect the different pieces to build something coherent.

It's built on top of a number of stereotypes, it narrates an important period of Brazilian history without the proper attention that it deserves.

I'm amazed to see that such a bad movie might have cost around BRL 478mi, which is as off today around US$ 288mi. Worst than that is the fact that most of it might have come from public funds.

There's a number of interesting Brazilian movies out there that you should be watching before you spend your time with this one.
