The Marvels (2023)
Back to fun story telling
As someone who is totally burned out on "multiverse" nonsense (if a multiverse actually existed, it would not be full of clones of people in ours), it was refreshing to have a movie grounded in a single timeline (mostly).
Lots of action combines with some inspired humor to bring around the best MCU film in a while. Stealing every scene she's in is Ms Marvel (gotta go back and watch that series now to catch up). Captain Marvel and the not yet named third member of the group are wonderfully cast alongside Nick Fury in what is now the shortest film in the series (a movie should only be as long or a short as the story demands, and this was on target).
It's not my favorite Marvel movie, but it's a lot better than half of them. Watch and enjoy.
Star Trek: The Galileo Seven (1967)
So much wrong here
The point of the episode is to demonstrate the superiority of emotion over logic, but so much goes wrong. First the bureaucrat made his point the first time. Treating Kirk as his enemy is plainly stupid. Next, the rampant insubordination of the shuttle crew is grounds for a court martial. The insistence on burying a dead crew member is downright confusing. And the characterization of the final solution as being emotional in nature is simply wrong. The logical choice when the options are a tiny chance of success vs no chance make the choice obvious.
This episode was tiring and irritating. I'm unlikely to ever waste my time on it again.
Encanto (2021)
Best Disney Film in Years
We all have our preferences, but between the fantastic music and the moving story, this film is amazing. The animation is top notch, but you expect that from Disney. The music is brilliantly incorporated in the story line, and you don't quite know where the story is headed from scene to scene.
I won't spoil anything, so my advice is to just watch it. The song lyrics move fast, so don't watch it distracted. I hope it brings you joy.
North (1994)
Maybe You Just Have to Be In the Mood
This movie gets so very little love from viewers and critics. I'm unsure of why. It never intended to be of great importance, but it is heartwarming and silly.
Virtually every scene is played over the top, and some of the dry humor is just so fun. Abe Vigoda gets a wonderful one as he contemplates his future (don't want to spoil anything). And it's packed with clever casting choices.
If you go in expecting a movie for the ages from the director of "When Harry Met Sally" and "The Princess Bride," you'll be disappointed. If you go in wanting some comic relief, this movie is sure to please.
Gone Girl (2014)
Interestingly Stupid
So here's the thing. The setup for the movie is very engaging. It's a fascinating story told with an interesting plot sequence.
I've seen reviews here, and they seem to run the gamut from amazingly good to amazingly bad. It is the latter, and yet I say two stars because the story of how their lives got to the point of the disappearance is fascinating, but even while watching the movie, questions entered my mind that I just couldn't answer, even after knowing the ending.
Why did Neil Patrick Harris' character show up so early in the story? Once he showed up, why did he appear to actually work against our protagonist? How could the feds be so mind numbingly stupid? You've got a police officer in your midst with valid questions: why would she be ignored? And the worst offense: that ending. Not since "Solitary Man" have I seen the credits appear, and I felt the need to complain out loud in a movie theater about the ending. Boy, was that a stupid ending! I've already noted that this review could include spoilers, but I feel the need to not spoil too much (if you're a sucker for punishment, by all means, spend the money: it's tripe, but it's pretty tripe), but oh, how I wish I had someone else to talk to about how stupid this movie was in more detail.
