The Many Saints of Newark (2021)
Doesn't even really try to be a movie or do anything
This isn't really a movie. It's just a cynical effort to extract some more money from the Sopranos.
Really nothing much of note happens at all.
You get to see a very brief cameo of a bunch of characters at a different age than they were in the series. Not enough to know or care for them. All of the main characters aren't known to fans of the show.
The action is underwhelming and low budget.
The acting and accents are bad enough to take you out of the movie.
I'm thinking anyone who gave this a good review did so for nostalgia reasons only.
Don't even think about watching this on its own merits.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
I assume acid is like this.
I loved this film. It was so stupid and so clever. So deep and so silly. It takes a decent amount of time, but what starts out as a comedy, then kung fu flick, turns into a lesson in life which will leave you in tears at its profundity.
The action and comedy serve their own purpose and would be enough to get a decent movie together. This film weaves them seamlessly into a solid and novel plot, though.
A multitude of concepts I've never seen mentioned, let alone explored in movies, are swirled together into something really special.
I really have no idea how a human can imagine this and then film it into reality. A visual and emotional masterpiece like you have never seen, guaranteed.
What a thing to make.
Definitely, Maybe (2008)
A massive waste of time, full of shallow characters
Largely like all of this cast, but this is a long and corny movie chocked full of shallow and unrelatable characters.
I can see what they tried to do here with multiple bait and switches.
However, when everything is a twist, nothing is a twist.
Save your time. You won't get depth or humour, or romance out of this movie.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Pointless and self-indulgent with a few fun bits
Pretty slow and meandering, leading to just about nothing.
There are some fun scenes and a bits and pieces. It's all really just a bit random and forced though. If people are saying this is any kind of artistic masterpiece then that's emperor's new clothes.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
Can't understand how this film managed to make me sad without getting me emotionally invested
Every character in this movie is either paper thin or a carbon copy of a Forest Gump character. Making people feel sad watching people age and die is not the same as envoking emotions through masterful film making.
Watch Forest Gump instead. This film is a poor copy of it in every regard.
The Lobster (2015)
Everything you hope a "black comedy" won't be
It's borderline unbelievable that this film could have amassed a rating of around 7. That it has is proof of people priding themselves on being able to see the masterpiece in a slow, senseless, pointless piece of garbage, all in the name of art.
None of the behaviours are even remotely logical. The characters literally don't show emotion. I couldn't ascertain whether this was supposed to mean something, or made sense in the book, but it was just plain bizarre.
If there was allegory or satire here, it eluded me. If you saw it, good for you, you must be so intelligent.
I strongly suggest no-one waste their time with this movie.
Dunkirk (2017)
Utterly underwhelming as a piece of storytelling and a piece of entertainment
I cannot tell you how disappointed I was with this film, being a fan of about everything Christopher Nolan does.
There were 2 ways the story of Dunkirk could be told:
1.An epic which showed broadly the scale of the operation, the death toll and the effect on the war.
2. Follow a group of characters and experience the story through their eyes as they go through it all.
It attempts the latter and falls short in a big way. Paper thin characters across the board left me completely disinterested in the story. Even Tom Hardy failed to evoke an emotion. What were his character traits? I couldn't name one except the obvious bravery.
The effects are seamless, I will give it that, but the quantities of everything are somewhat baffling. I think I saw less than 10 aircraft in the whole movie, yet dive bombing is largely the focus of the film. Did they run out of budget?
I think I watched a different film to the other reviewers.
Pigs (2007)
Pretty funny. Nice ending
I thought this film was pretty funny. If you're a fan of the college/American Pie type genre then give it a go. Interesting ending and a few laughs along the way. You'll probably be surprised at the quality of acting given the anonymous cast list. Typical level of female nudity, chauvinism, sexism etc for this type of film. Don't expect an artsy masterpiece, but I found the cinematography and direction pretty interesting. Generally an interesting take on the college humor genre from a sub-blockbuster level budget. Your girlfriend will hate watching this with you. If you haven't got one then you'll probably enjoy it
