Gladiator (2000)
hmmmm.....
I must admit, I never wanted to watch Gladiator because of Russell Crowe - an ill mannered buffoon in my opinion. But I recently decided to sit down and watch the film due to many people telling me how good the film was. I was frankly quite surprised at Crowe's acting abilities (he was pretty damn good!), but overall, the film was lacking something. The effects were amazing, the directing pretty good, the score was fantastic, yet I didn't feel that it lived up to the hype. It just doesn't measure up to other epics such as Braveheart. I think too much time was spent on effects, so some of the heart of the film was lost. I'm sorry...I just can't pinpoint exactly what it is that I mean, but I would say watch it for the effects n Crowe n Joaquin Phoenix's acting, but don't expect it to be as good as it sounded.
Sari & Trainers (1999)
ahem...
'An exotic take on a Bollywood musical' said the TV listings. I could never agree with this. Bollywood films are a constant presence within my household, and I'm sorry to say that I find most of them rather boring, with the same storyline regurgitated time and time again. Boy meets girl, boy likes girl (and vice versa), parents or other family members agree and all ends happily with them together in the end. This film is no different to a hundred other Bollywood movies, apart from the fact that it is even more ridiculous being moved from its traditional setting to London. Sudden dancing and stupid songs (I speak primarily of the brothers' confrontation) have no place in an English film. The acting was not even wooden - it was nonexistent. I thought the use of the sari was inventive, but overall it was a thoroughly ridiculous and boring film, the story being made worse by being taken out of its natural element.
Take my advice and don't watch it - just see a Bollywood movie instead.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
what a let-down ending
I must say, when I started watching this movie, I thought that it was absolutely fantastic, but it's sooooo depressing. I would have liked the film to finish on this note with david staring at the blue fairy, but then when all that fairy-tale narration came into play, it just ruined the whole film. And then those alien creature things? It was too fairy-tale like an ending, and it ruined the rest of the film, whicb was absolutely fantastic. The visual effects were stunning, and the flesh fair scene particularly grotesque. But as I said, what a let down at the end.
