Rathnam (2024)
Rathnam: A film for action lovers and one-time watch for families
Rathnam is an action-packed masala film which can be watched for its high-octane action sequences. The story, though predictable, has a different concept which makes it interesting. The script and twists are on lines with various South indian action films, but the fast-paced narration makes the film engaging.
Vishal has done a decent job. Priya Bhavani Shankar is the main pillar of the story and has done a decent job as well. Murali Sharma, Hareesh Peraadi and Vettai Muthukumar have done a decent job as antagonists. Samuthirakani and Gautham Vasudev Menon shine in their roles. Yogi Babu's comedy works in parts.
The positive points are the action sequences choreographed by Kannal Kannan, Peter Hein, Vicky and Dilip Subbarayan. The music by Devi Sri Prasad is ok with Uyire En Uyire being the best song, while Bgm is fine. M. Sukumar's cinematography is good in the action sequences (especially single take shot action sequences). T. S. Jay editing is decent. Hari has made the film fast-paced with action and commercial elements.
Overall, Rathnam is a one-time watchable mass film and can be watched with family if they are able to digest gory scenes in the film.
Beast (2022)
Beast: Thalapathy Vijay's one-man show
Beast - A one-man-army show of Thalapathy Vijay with swag. Vijay excels as a RAW agent and it is his show all the way. Pooja Hegde is an eye-candy and is used only for dark humour sequences. Selvaraghavan, Shaji Chen, Shine Tom Chacko are ok in their roles.
Director Nelson has made an out-and-out one-man army action film with dark humour. The plot is predictable, but has scope for action sequences and Anbariv has delivered a top-notch action scenes in the film with the memorable ones are skating fight scene and action scene after interval. The technical aspects like music, cinematography and editing by Anurudh, Manoj and R. Nirmal elevate the film with the background score blending well with the action sequences, but the film suffers from a weak antagonist.
Overall, Beast is a film for action lovers and watch the film only for Vijay, action sequences and top-notch technical aspects. Watch this film on Netflix and SUN NXT.
Joshua: Imai Pol Kaka (2024)
Joshua: A slick action film with well choreographed action scenes
If you want to see John Wick and Bodyguard in one film, then Joshua is your film.
Joshua: directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, who has delivered hits like Kaakha Kaakha, Yennai Arindhaal, Vettaiyaadu Vilayaadu, has directed this action flick. The storyline is packed with slick and realism action scenes and plot is a mix of films like Bodyguard and John Wick. The action scenes were choreographed well.
Varun has done a good job in acting and action scenes, but his characterization should have been better. Raahei is also good in her role. DD's role would have been like Angelina Jolie's role in Wanted, but couldn't. However, her performance is decent. The other actors have done well in their roles.
Yannick Ben, the unsung hero of the film, has delivered well-choreographed slick action scenes. Some scenes were reminded of John Wick. Cinematography and editing were top notch. Music was decent and the bgm was superb. GVM has done a good job, but the romance track between the lead pair should have been written better as the romantic track in Kaakha Kaakha was one of the best in GVM's films. Dialogues were somewhat ok and cringy. If romance track and dialogues were written well, then this would have been sure-shot success at the box office.
Overall, Joshua is worth a watch for the action scenes. Don't expect any story from GVM as the plot is wafer-thin and has only action. Watch it on Amazon Prime Video for an action packed summer.
Bodyguard (2020)
Bodyguard review: A raw action drama with predictability
Bodyguard is a fast-paced action drama with good performances and realistic action scenes expected from South Korean films. Seok-Chul Kang and Ye-Bin Yoo's performance is the highlight of the film. The antagonist track and performances were good. Cinematography and editing were decent and story is actually routine and wafer thin, but the action scenes were realistic and tension in the action scenes were present, which makes it one-time watch for the viewers. South Korean films are also good in comedy scenes, but some of comedy scenes didn't work in the film. Director Seung-Hyeon Son has done a decent job and the script was decent with runtime being short.
Overall, Bodyguard is a one-time watch for action lovers and family audience. Watch it on Prime Video in Korean and Hindi languages. Recommended for everyone.
Salaar: Cease Fire - Part 1 (2023)
Salaar: A crazy action packed mass entertainer with Mad Max-style world building, drama and high-octane action scenes
Salaar is an entertaining and crazy updated version of Ugramm. The mass elements are fantastic with the action scenes, story buildup and twisted ending for the sequel as the highlights.
Prabhas and Prithviraj Sukumaran nailed their roles as Deva and Vardha and the friendship song and emotions are splendid in this action drama. Jagapathi Babu is a blink and miss role or cameo role, but his character is superb. Shruthi Hassan's character begins the film's story with Mime Gopi narrating about Khansaar after the interval. Eeswari Rao has also done well as Prabhas's mother. Bobby Simha, John Vijay, Garuda Ram, Pramod, Tinnu Anand (the director of Shahenshah), Brahmaji, Devaraj and Bhajarangi Loki also done well in their roles.
Anbariv's action scenes are splendid after their recent Malayalam film RDX. Ravi Basrur's bgm is splendid and blends well with the fight scenes. Bhuvan Gowda's camerawork is absolutely splendid, crazy and magnificient. Editing by Ujwal Kulkarni is superb and the Dark Theme is really good as it reminds me of Zack Snyder's Justice League and 300 film series. Prashanth Neel has done a superb job with narrating Ugramm in a crazy yet splendid manner. The Khansaar's backstory and Game of Thrones style story was superb especially the zombie scene (which reminds me of Netflix film Carter).
Overall, Salaar is a must watch mass action entertainer in theatres and a festival for action lovers of blood and gore. Ignore negative reviews and watch as an audience rather than expectation/watching as a critic, you will surely be entertained.
Sisu (2022)
Sisu: A high-voltage gory actioner
Sisu is a 90 minute massy action feast which will be a festival for action lovers. The writing is fast paced and story is wafer-thin. Jorma Tommila as Aatami "The Immortal" is superb, though he has less dialogues. The performance is his career-best. The Nazi soldiers especially Aksel Hennie was superb in his performance. The main highlight was the well-shot gory action sequences from beginning to end. The action sequences were like John Wick and Rambo style. Cinematography and locations were showcased wonderfully. The editing and VFX were top-notch and also customes and world building. If anyone want a Rambo and Tarantino style action set pieces, watch Sisu in Prime Video with a tub of popcorn and enjoy the wild ride.
Taken (2008)
Taken review: A gripping film with tried-and-tested story and awesome action choreography
Taken is a game-changer for Liam Neeson who starred as the antagonist in Batman Begins. Liam Neeson's performance was good especially the iconic dialogue when his daughter was kidnapped. The story is tried-and-tested one, but is gripping till the 90 minute runtime.
Action choreography deserves appreciation and is the highlight point. Editing and cinematography is also praiseworthy. Director Pierre Morel has done a phenomenal job with his direction and writing was engaging for the viewers. The bonding between Liam Neeson and his daughter is also showcased well.
Overall, Taken is a must watch for action fans who love to watch a gripping film with popcorn. If you want to see the Kannada version of the film with mass elements watch Chingaari (It is the remake of this movie) starring Darshan (DBoss).
Style King (2016)
Style King review: Ganesh's show all the way
Style King is one of underrated films of Ganesh who excels as a grey shaded character and a mass character. The story revolves around two lookalikes who cross paths with each other. Remya Nambeesan, Girish Shivanna and other actors also did well in their roles. Rangayana Raghu, Padmaja Rao and Sadhu Kokila excels in their comedy timing. Sai Dheena is menacing as the antagonist.
The action sequences were entertaining with Arjun Janya's background score, but the makers added unnecessary masala elements which distracts the story. Director P. C. Shekar should has done a fair job but could have made a genre film as it is a black comedy action film which would have been entertaining.
Overall, Style King can be watched for Gsnesh's performances, action sequences, plot and background score, but the masala elements ruined the film. Watch it on SUN NXT for a time pass entertainment.
Transporter 2 (2005)
Transporter 2 review: A pure popcorn action entertainment
Transporter 2 is an over-the-top popcorn action flick and a improvement over its prequel The Transporter. It is a tailor-made role and film for Jason Statham who excels in car chases and and to hand combat scenes. Alessandro Gassmann and Kate Nauta were menacing as the antagonists. Hunter Clary as Jack was also good in the role.
The main highlight of the film is the action sequences especially the climax garage scene, along with the car chases, lab fight and aeroplane climax were tension-filled and entertaining. Director Louis Leterrier who also co-directed the first film has done a good job with the story, direction and action sequences. The length is also short and fast-paced which makes its more watchable.
Overall, Transporter 2 is a must-watch for Jason Statham's fans and action fans who can enjoy this film with popcorn for its insane action, gripping story and direction. Concluding the film as a pure popcorn action flick, Watch the film on Disney+Hotstar if you like fast paced popcorn entertainment films.
Sarrainodu (2016)
Sarrainodu review: An action-packed mass feast
Sarrainodu is an action packed feast for mass action lovers in Indian cinema. It has the ingredients of a massy action entertainer expected for a OTT-fun entertainer. Allu Arjun and well executed action blocks by Ram-Lakshman are the highlights of the film. Story is 80s old and predictable, Rakul Preet Singh's character is a weepy character and a drawback while Aadhi Pinishetty is the highlight point as a menacing antagonist. Boyapati Srinu has done a good job with Arjun and Aadhi's performances, action blocks and S. Thaman's background score, but the songs, story and comedy were not good.
Conclusion: A mass action feast for fans and action lovers. Watch it on SUN NXT.
Ajagajantharam (2021)
Ajagajantharam review: An action-packed chaotic entertainer
Ajagajantharam is an action feast of 122 minutes for the youth. A chaos of egoistic men occurs at the temple festival is the one-line story of the film. Keeping aside the story, the action sequences are well-staged, grounded and choreographed realistically. The song Ollulleru is entertaining. Antony Varghese does an exceptional job in acting and action scenes. Kichu Tellus and Vineeth Vishwam: The writers of the film didn't add any twist or turns and they also showcased the traditional temple festivals in Kerala villages. The lack of twist and turns is not a drawback, but it is a good sign as it would give a feeling of watching a feel-good film because many action movies add twist or turns in the story which sometimes makes the film boring, and this film is a relief from twist and turns which makes it enjoyable. Arjun Ashokan is also menacing in the film. Kichu Tellus and Vineeth Vishwam are also the actors in the film and they also done their job well. Cinematography by Shameer Muhammed is brilliant and music by Justin Varghese is superb, especially in the action sequences. Tinu Pappachan's direction is also good and did a good job in showcasing the realistic action sequences with slo-mo motion style.
Overall, Ajagajantharam is a theatre/binge popcorn watch with its realistic beautifully staged action sequences, cinematography and music being the main highlights. The lack of story can be compensated for the action sequences. Watch this entertaining action film on SONY LIV with your popcorn in this summer.
Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (2023)
Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ka Jaan review: A one-time watchable family entertainer
Just finished watching Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan on ZEE5 and it is a one-time watch family entertainer from Salman Khan after a terrific cameo in Pathaan. Salman Khan nailed his role as usual. Pooja Hegde has nothing to do, but plays a typical village family girl. Venkatesh is good and his performance is superb in the climax. Jagapathi Babu and Vijender Singh are good as villains. Bhagyashree's cameo is also superb and will be feast for fans as they reunite after the superhit 90s flick Maine Pyar Kiya.
The story is an age-old outdated story and adaptation of Tamil flick Veeram. The production values are colorful and performances from the cast makes it watchable and the songs are unnecessary placed in the film making it feel irritated. Ravi Basrur's background score is mind-blowing in the emotional blocks and action sequences, especially the entry scene, train fight and climax. Farhad Samji has done a fair job, but he should stop doing comedy films and focus on old-school action films even some of the dialogues are irritating and cringy.
Overall, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan is a one-time watchable family entertainer especially Anl Arasu's action sequences, background score and cimematography. Watch it if you can bear some cringy dialogues and outdated storyline.
Suzume no Tojimari (2022)
Suzume review: An engaging and emotional story with brilliant animation
Just watched Suzume and the thing which this anime film gives is a breath of fresh air from action anime shows like Tokyo Revengers. Suzume's characterization and design was relatable and superb, especially Souta and the two cats (white and black cats). It also details about the disasters which occurred in Japan and the preventing the disaster story is novel and thrilling. The chemistry between Suzume and Souta is hearttouching and the climax sequences were brilliantly animated.
Overall, Suzume is a must-watch anime masterpiece with families and also gives powerful message in the film: Past is Past, but the future will be perfect and should focus on present. Guys watch this masterpiece if you haven't seen it in theatres. It will provide you a fresh feeling of watching a good film for non-anime people and anime fans.
Commando (1985)
Commando review: An edge-of-the-seat action packed feast for Arnold fans
Commando is a gripping edge-of-the-seat action feast and is a must watch for Arnold Schwarzenegger's fans. Arnold totally nailed his role with his physique and acting and is superb in action and shootout sequences. Rae Dawn Chong is also good in her role and her comic timing is good. Vernon Wells is menacing and stylish as the antagonist.
Director Mark L. Lester has given a proper action feast in 90 minutes and the screenplay by Steven E. De Souza is very engaging from beginning to end. The action sequences especially the fight and climax shootout sequences are fantastic and awesome. No doubt, a cult classic has emerged through this film.
Overall, Commando is a 90 minute action feast for Arnold and action fans. Watch this film in any streaming platform and you won't regret watching this. Go Watch it now!.
Hai Phuong (2019)
Furie review: Despite a simple and routine storyline, the action sequences are impressive
Furie is an out and out paisa vasool action flick and an inspirational film for women to learn martial arts.
Veronica Ngo plays an ex-gangster and a single mother and is also superb in action and emotional moments. Cát Vy's acting is really good in emotional sequences. Phan Thanh Nhiên as detective is awesome especially in train action episode. Tran Thanh Hoa is menacing and stylish as the antagonist, where the idea of a stronger woman antagonist deserves appreciation.
Credit should also be given to the well designed and superbly choreographed action sequences as the story is action-packed yet simple and routine. Director Le-Van Kiet's direction is brilliant along with camera work and cinematography.
Overall, Furie is an action-packed feast for fans who love violence and martial arts. Watch it on Netflix for a thrilling experience. There should be a sequel to this film.
