A Lonely Place to Die (2011)
Awesome mixed with Blah
There were some serious high notes in this movie surrounded by deep troughs of horrible choices. If they would've taken a few more months combing over the details, this movie would've been a serious contender. It's better than most movies out there on demand. The cinematography was impressive. The landscapes alone are worth watching. The storyline is tight. The dialogue is rich. The acting is in the top percentile with moments of "eh." But the killer... the flat tire of the movie... there were too many moments throughout where they should've gone right, but they chose to go left. Why?
IMDb on the Scene: Academy Awards 2017 (2017)
Ethic Diversification in the Academy Awards
Ethnic equilibrium should never be the focus for an actor being nominated for an award. It's not about color. It's about performance. Please stop making the distinction. The faster we can blur the lines; the faster we can appreciate the disappearance of those lines. You will lose credibility by forcefully shifting the bell curve to compensate for something that is mathematically inaccurate. It's not organic.
Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010)
Welcome to Arboria
THIS IS THE MOST BIZARRE; MOST INFLUENTIAL MOVIE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. It is extremely paced, but any faster... and it doesn't work. It is euphoric and warping. It makes me feel as if someone is constantly behind me. As if there is a secret door in my house that I am unaware of. As if the colors of this world extend beyond the visible light spectrum, and I can now see in UV and infrared. I seriously cannot get this movie out of my mind, and what's worse is... I don't think Arboria will let me go. This is a cult classic and I am obsessed. It will transcend you. Michael Rogers is brilliant, Panos Cosmatos is revolutionary, and Dr. Mercurio Arboria will guide you (gently along the path) to a new, better, happier you.
Dark Space (2013)
Horrible Direction
I love sci-fi, so I am a bit biased in this genre. The story is OK. It's just too predictable. Another poorly scripted movie with heavy VFX; where the dialogue is unrealistic, the personas of the crew are unrealistic, and the actions they take are unrealistic. Poor choices all around. It's just another sci-fi movie on the shelf. I knew everything that was going to happen almost 4-5 minutes before it happened. How did I know a girl was gonna survive to the end and be the heroine? Because the girl always survives. Yawn. Only 1 person gets seriously injured in the crash. Poor choice. The entire party (save for the tech guy and the injured) leave the ship? Um... sorry. No way. The ship is the most important asset. If it's an unknown world, chances are... you guessed it... there's nothing out there worth searching for but food and water. Do they go hunting or collecting resources? lol You guessed it again. No, they go swimming. Wait, you mean to tell me that despite all the survival shows on TV, they missed that? Um, we have crocs on Earth. WTF is in the water dumb@$$. Nobody filled a canteen. They went swimming. Wow. When the tech guy leaves the ship at night, and just stands there waiting for the aliens. Laughable. No f***ing way. I wouldn't even stand outside my tent in Yellowstone with creatures I know exist (bears, wolves) let alone an alien world! And when the aliens are seen zipping by at the speed of blurred vision. It's amazing that the tech guy has all the time in the world to outrun the alien carrying a wounded friend. Wow. Really poor choices. Too many inconsistencies. I will say though... that there were a few moments where I did laugh out loud. Not to the credit of the movie's direction, but because the script was so bad... I couldn't help but think. No one in the world talks this way. I mean. These guys are drinking and smoking on the ship. Party animals, and then when it's time for conversation... the atmosphere feels so dry it's hard to believe that any of these characters are actually likable. They all just talk about sex, but you SEE NOTHING. LOL!!! As in any movie though, if you stimulated a response (my review here)... you've won. I watched the entire movie, so Kudos to the film for getting the job done. I was just left unfulfilled. We don't need more sci-fi movies. We need better sci-fi movies. I own Humanity's End by the way. I love my sci-fi. On your next go-around, please correct these mistakes. Freegin contact me. I'll proof the script. Let's get the next movie done right!
House Hunting (2012)
A Technical Review
Overall, the movie is worth watching. I believe that one must walk away from a movie with a changed perspective or emotional charge. This movie does just that; not initially, but eventually. Cinematography was EXCELLENT. I was thoroughly impressed with every decision they made. They did such an incredible job with the camera. Almost as good as "The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh". Sound was well above average. It wasn't over or under done; just brilliantly done. Lighting was flat; often dark at times, but not in a good way. The story was absolutely magnificent! Eric Hurt knows how to tell a story. A significant problem with this movie was dialogue choices. They were borderline horrible. People do not talk/behave this way. I complained throughout the entire movie saying if the dialogue was on point this movie would've been FLAWLESS. I was so mad because the conversations were painful. The acting was really good at times with a few speed bumps of inconceivable choices. They casted really good actors. There were a few scenes where the director should've re-done them. I cringe when I don't see perfection, but as the movie continues you can clearly see that he gets better at directing. The script and acting steadily gets better as you watch the movie, so if you're a critic like me... it's still worth the wait. Costumes and make-up were good. Despite a sketchy script, the story makes this movie worth while. I look forward to seeing what Eric's got cooking in the oven.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
A must watch movie!
Shawshank Redemption is quite possibly the best movie ever made. This includes all time frames and genres. There are no flaws in this story; only brilliance. It's simply a remarkable story. It's a timepiece feature with an amazing cast. Character development is top-notch. The story line and delivery are extraordinary. I wish I could re- watch this movie over again as if I had never seen it before, so do yourself a favor... if you're watching this movie or plan to watch this movie for the first time... turn off your phone, dim the lights and be prepared to be amazed. It's an enriching story with adult content that is suitable for older kids. You will laugh. You will cry. You will get angry. And... you will feel love, hope and redemption unlike any movie you have ever seen before. Shawshank Redemption is unforgettable.
