Kochaj i tancz (2009)
Simply Beautiful!
This movie was a great surprise for me. I will definitely pay more attention to Polish movies from now on.
The only word I find to describe "Love and Dance" is "beautiful." It is a beautiful mixture of colors, drama, comedy, romance, art, commercial, music and dance. The result of it is a marvelous feeling. The viewer simply falls in love with the characters.
The actors, as well, do a very good job. It's so refreshing watching Central and Eastern European actors at work in movies which are not all about the dark era of some kind of a totalitarianism regime. They are simply amazing.
The director puts together a puzzle of such colorful and heartfelt scenes...
I recommend you to watch this movie if you have the chance. You will definitely not regret it!
Gigantic (2008)
The unexpected and the unexplained in our lives
This is an hour and a half of reality. If you are looking for some movie to make you forget about the gray life and all of its happenings, don't watch Gigantic. If you want to see how normal people react in extraordinary situations, without any imaginative and "hoolywoodistic" improvements, go ahead and watch. Very few people understand the poetry of Gigantic. Even fewer understand why the movie is called this way. And the explanation is almost obvious: because what's happening to Brian is gigantic and what's happening to Happy is even more gigantic.
Brian and Happy don't react extraordinary, cinematographically, in front of these gigantic situations, but they do what all of us would have probably done. This is why Gigantic is a good movie. Some have criticized the fact that Gigantic was put in romantic comedies genre. I have to disagree. Just because it doesn't have a cinematographic touch, it doesn't mean Gigantic is not funny or romantic. It's true, the jokes are Britishlike.
But the romance is sparkling. Brian and Happy are obviously in love from the first time they meet. And they share some pretty moments together. The homeless guy represents the unexplained in our lives. He lives only in Brian's head, or maybe he doesn't. Just like all the things we can't explain. Gigantic is not a beautiful movie. But it definitely is a good movie.
Stardust (2007)
This movie is incredible!
Silly me I never watched Stardust when it came out in 2007. I read some bad reviews and I was fooled. I would have never guessed this movie was so incredible, that it is now in my top 5.
The storyline is fantastic. I used to read stories all of my childhood, but I swear that in quite some parts the storyline of Stardust overlooked my guesses.
The characters are also fantastic: starting with very small parts - like Bernard's, to the main characters - Tristan and Yvaine. Every character has a great deal of importance in the story, and every actor did his or her best job becoming a part of this story.
It is so beautiful that great actors, older or younger, like Peter O'Toole and Rupert Everett, make the best of their small appearances in the movie. I loved all the subplots, especially the one with the ghosts of the king's sons, which were hilarious.
But what I love most about this movie is the way it made my heart beat for two hours. I can still remember how fast my heart went beating when Yvaine confessed her love to Tristan. And then how amused I was when I saw his little mouse eyes. And how melted my heart was when I realized that this story is about an impossible love, made possible by extraordinary characters and extraordinary adventures.
The lovers came not only from different worlds, but from completely antagonic worlds, that could only exist one opposite to the other.
Love, adventure, imagination, fantasy, humor, great image and soundtrack, great story, even great actors - this movie is a must see!
I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (2007)
Great movie for a relaxing evening
I gave my excellent ten not because this is the best movie ever, but because this is an excellent movie for a fun, relaxing evening. Great jokes and sense of humor, a Sandler in a macho man part that almost suits him and a very sensitive chubby guy, that would do everything for his kids. I watched the original movie (maybe you didn't know, but there is a similar movie, made in Australia, in which the first actor is the guy that acted in Crocodile Dundee)and I really liked it, so when I first got the chance to watch "I know..." I was sure it would be a bit lousy (a Hollywood remake of an Australian movie with British humor about homosexuals didn't sound that good). But I was wrong. There are very funny lines and scenes, there's a hooked story and some great actors having fun acting their parts. The only thing the the Australian movie did better was a more realistic view over the gay problems and the motivation for two straight guys to get married. So if you want to watch "I know..." sit back, relax and don't take popcorn, because you will have troubles from eating and laughing at the same time.
