Statham is fun to watch when he fights, but yikes. A bratty kid does something to a weaker being (not a puppy dog this time). Statham, playing a mysterious retired baddie known as a Beekeeper, takes down hordes of baddies in revenge. The Beekeeper organization is sketchily explained in a few dozen sentences. They have a call center which is like a modern update to John Wick's 1940s-esque ladies on phones; they send out missions via text; nothing else is explained about it except that Beekeepers are orders of magnitude more badass than your basic government badasses.
So there's all that. But also, the female FBI agent doesn't seem to have a compelling reason to go after him! We kept wondering why she was pursuing him so doggedly when she clearly understood his revenge motive and also equally clearly agreed with what he was doing. And she seemed to be barely repressing a smirk a lot of the time, even in serious downer situations where it was inappropriate to the story.
The story was very formulaic. A passable popcorn movie for a boring afternoon, watching the ways Statham comes up with to accomplish his goals, but I'm glad we didn't see it in theatres.
