F for Fake (1973)
One of Welles strangest and finest films
Welles makes great films there is no doubt about that. I think that most critics would agree that his films are some of the finest of American directors, but why is this film so good? It seems like a simple answer at first but Welles' films never have simple reasons for their quality. I think what makes this one of Welles greatest films is three major reasons the editing, the humanness of Welles, and the spectacle that the film creates. The editing gives this film its base and gives the misinterpretation of a documentary feel. I'm not sure why people think this is pre MTV editing, but I would think it has something to do with the switching and fast-paced attitude that the editing offers. I think this editing is just simply documentary editing at its finest because documentary are suppose to give the illusion that it is real events that are being filmed when it is only an interpretation of reality. The humanness of Welles astounds me in this film as well. I think that Welles left in scenes that made him look bad simply to make that movie have a human touch of the director, who had a long history of fantastic films, to make you feel that you are his friend and that the movie is personal. Which I believe that it is Welles' most personal of all the films he made. The spectacle can only be described by actually watching the film, which if you like art movies, is sure not to disappoint. Welles felt in the film that all art is subjective and easy copied. Find out for yourself if you agree with Welles and this masterpiece of modern cinema.
The Nativity Story (2006)
A new classic of cinema
This film is a classic because it contains everything that a classic film needs to be considered so. Every major artistic angle is covered to pitch perfect quality in this film. Although this film will "probably" not be nominated for any major awards it should win best picture this year easily. The acting is superior as well as the editing, cinematography (which is its best feature if you had to pick one), directing, and story. All aspects carry the film into tremendous weight of a classic film. If you think this film should not be a classic ask yourself why that is? Because this film is artistically superior. This is a perfect film for non Christian people during the holiday season because this is the true reason for Christmas. This is also a perfect family film because it is God's story of love and hope.
Hudson Hawk (1991)
The Worst Movie I Ever Loved!!!
I love Hudson Hawk period. From start to finish the movie delivers nothing and everything at the same time. If you hate the movie you have good reasons I'm sure, it is about as realistic as Hollywood lives our in the realm of reality to the average person. I personally think that almost all comedy will date itself eventually; this includes the Marx Brothers which I also consider beside Chaplin to be the foremost comedic experts on film. So if you don't understand the significance of "will you play Nintendo with me" I can understand why you may not like the movie. This movie fires on all of it's cylinders at all times, the effort of all the cast, I would say, was probably truly genuine to make the movie good. If you love or hate Hudson Hawk I hope that you can appreciate the apparent attempt to not even come close to beginning realistic to reality in its comedy which would be similar to Dr. Strangelove's comedy. That is why I truly appreciate Hudson Hawk even years after I have seen it, it just sticks with me. The movie at no time ever gives the claim that this will be a realistic comedy, and I found the breaks with reality very enjoyable. This movie I would compare with the comedy of the Marx's Brothers "Duck Soup", and currently the TV show "Phil of the Future", the comedy is extremely enjoyable if you can break yourself from the habit of believing that not everything you see on TV is real or could happen. Just remember that "the guy on the donkey is just a guy on a donkey".
