The Flintstones (1994)
Classic! They don't make movies like this anymore
As the title says, they really don't make movies like this anymore. The theming for this movie is so spot on with the prehistoric comedy and I love all the little hidden jokes (Like the drive in movie sign that sats Tar Wars at the beginning). The details make this movie and the set design and props are literally incredible. All the animals doing their household jobs are a hoot too. I honestly cannot think of better casting for Fred and Barney with John Goodman and Rick Moranis. They completely became/embodied Fred and Barnie and had great best buddy chemistry on screen. This came out in 1994 and was one of my favorite childhood movies. This deserves a better score than everyone is giving it. Is it a bit corny at times? Of course! It's based on a cartoon and is supposed to be cornball comedy. If you have never seen this movie, it is a must watch!
Fatal Attraction (1987)
Absolutely Psychotic
I'm not sure what took me so long to see thia film but I finally did this 2023 and the film does not disappoint. I can see why this has been consistently been considered one of the best thrillers in the history of film.
Why Glenn Close did not win an Oscar for this film is beyond me. Why is it that she is always snubbed for Oscars and Golden Globes for her impeccable character work!? She is national treasure as an actress and this absolutely psychopathic character she presents is terrifyingly memorable! "I'm not going to be IGNORED, Daniel!"
It's incredible how quickly Alex goes from this easy breezy covergirl... acool, calm and collected seductress that Dan has a one night affair with....to absolutely flipping on her head and embodying a dangerous manipulative twisted vengeful psychopath. When Dan tells her that the one night affair is over and he must go, she immediately starts to turn up the volume of psychotic behavior. First by verbally abusing Dan, then crying and slitting her wrists-trying to get him to feel guilt.... which eventually escalates to phone calls and stalking Dan and his family to then killing the family's pet rabbit (the kitchen scene is horrifying) to physically kidnapping Ellen to take her to an amusement park.... to an epic final culmination of that memorable heartracing scene with the bathtub.
My eyes were glued to the screen in this classic thriller . The movie has really stood the test of time since 1987. We don't see many actresses who master the female villain quite like Glenn Close. Alex? Cruella De Ville? Stepford Wives? She is always 10 out of 10!
The Creator (2023)
Beautiful film. Captivating
This film deserves award recognition in my opinion. Beautiful filmography, shots of natural lands and futuristic cityscapes, incredible battle scenes, machinery, and character design. The actress playing Alfie was phenomenal. Such range of emotion! You can't help but love her character. We see a dystopian future come to life and the war between humans and ai. Its something that one could see in the future as our technology continues to progress. Some see ai and robots as servants or "only programs" or dangerous technology. This film proves that the only danger that really lies in this particular futuristic world is fear and misinformation which leads to hatred and violence. Some see these beings are not perceived as dangerous but as family or as loved ones. People grow to cohabitate with ai and robots to live peacefully. The question is, which side will win in the end.
The Addams Family (1991)
No remake compares to this film
This movie is a classic. Plain amd simple. Don't listen to the critics reviews. New York Times called this aimless? A completely rediculous review. Both the original and Addams Family Values are incredible movies and we watch them both at least once a year. The attention to details in the creepy and kooky Addams family mansion still makes my eyes come alive. I see different things each time I watch this movie. I also have to say that the casting of Morticia, Gomez, Fester, Wednesday and Lurch are incomparible to other films and series. Each person embodies the role and becomes the character. I think with Gomez especially, I have never seen anyone play him better. Raul Julia is Gomez! We forget they are just acting! Another thing I love about this movie is the humor. There are one liners every couple of minutes which keeps the audience smiling and laughing. The Uncle knick-knack scene gets me everytime. It's a family horror film with a darker touch! This movie will live on for decades to come. It's already 2023 and this 1991 film is a part of our Halloween tradition. "Snap Snap".
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
Exciting at every turn!
We know from the classic Dracula story that the Demeter had a terrible end but it was only one chapter! Now we finally get an insight of what might have happened minute by minute within those tragic days of her last voyage. I thought the cast did a fantastic job putting intense emotion into each of the scenes from this terrifying tale. It's nice to see Liam Cunningham and David Dasmalchian in more prominent roles than just Davos and Polka Dot Man! I want more of each! Aisling Fronciosi's character was so interesting and breaks away from the classic stereotypical female roles in Dracula movies. I enjoyed her acting. Finally, Corey Hawkins brings a new and fresh character to the typical vampire movie ....possibly more to his tale in the future? Another fascinating touch to this was the appearance of Dracula. Not your usual swave debonair Gary Oldman Or Christopher Lee type. More animalistic. I liked this film! Would recommend. I took points off because I could barely see the scenes in the dark...it was almost pitch black and I was really struggling to see any of the actors at points. I also wanted to see more of the male form of Dracula.
No Escape (1994)
Why is this movie not more popular?
I really don't understand why this movie didn't do well in theaters? Dystopian future sci fi films were everything in the 90s. Waterworld came out only a year later and had the same vibes. My boyfriend and I found this on a streaming service and loved it! Star studded cast with huge sets. The action sequences draw the viewer right in, not to mention the premace is interesting. Prisons that can't be held within the normal facility get transported to a prison island inhabited by 2 barbaric tribes. This film had elements of Mad Max as well as Lord of the Flies as well as Waterworld and Lost Boys as well. Give this one a go if you want a quirky action film starring Ray Liotta! Giving this a 7/10 due to poor script, minimal character arcs and the awful Casey sidekick character. We never get to find out what happens with the Insiders left on the island either.
One Night with the King (2006)
Bad script, captivating story and scenery
I had never read the story of Queen Esther/Hadassah. This movie captivated me from the start. Loved watching Luke Goss, Tiffany Dupont, James Callis and Especially John-Rhys Davies this. I don't often see bibical films but this was delightful. The vivid scenery, costuming and sets were a feast for the eyes. I was fascinated by the plotpoint of the king searching for a new queen. It made me sad how incredibly misogynistic an act it was to round up all the women in the kingdom for his own satisfaction, but you can't help but look away and root for Hadassah. She shows immense strength in the film in overcoming the fear or her discovery and the fear of disobedience. Did I love the script? No. Did i love the acting by some of the characters? No. But overall I thought there was great storytelling here.
When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
Such a classic
I don't know how Rob Reiner did it but this by far one of the best rom coms ever made. The interviewed couples are my favorite part throughout the movie. Billy and Meg have such great chemistry in this film. Opposites really do attract. It is magical to see Carry Fisher in this as well when she was young. All the little details of single life, and the roller coasters of relationships are shown here. The comedy and one liners from Billy Crystal make this movie. Some of the things the coming out of his mouth are so funny/sad/true. This is also one those films where the movie takes us through different seasons and areas around New York. We see famous places, beautiful autumn trees and Christmas and New Years. You are really immersed and fall in love with the characters. Top 10 rom coms of all time for sure!
Moonstruck (1987)
SNAP OUT OF IT!
This is one of my top 5 movies of all time. I can't express how much I adore this film. We see an oscar winning actress emerge from this film. Cher and Nicholas cage completely KILL it is in this film. Props to Olypia Dukakis as well for her stunning and hilarious performance as Cher's mother. "YOU GOT A LOVE BITE ON YOUR NECK." In fact, The entire cast works so well together as a slightly dysfunctional Italian American family who get on each others nerves, borderline ruins their relationships, yet comes together in this end knowing they are a family and love each other. The grandpa with his dogs is absolutely hysterical. For Nicholas Cage, this is one of his earlier films. His heartbroken rage and passion make him perfect to play opposite of Cher. The scene where he overturns the table and kissed Cher always gets me! "YOU'RE A WOLF."
The film keeps you laughing but also creates an unforgettable coziness and love story that will keep you rewatching this for years. Moonstruck has struck home in all of our hearts.
Victor/Victoria (1982)
You can't take your eyes off Julie
I saw this for the first time this June 2023 and I can't believe its taken me this long. This film is one of the earlier well known films to shine a light on lgbt lifestyles and lgbt culture, including drag as an art.
One of the first things I noticed about this film was Julie Andrews timeless presence and voice gracing the screen again and pairing with the dreamy James Garner. I also hadn't seen a film with Robert Preston since the last time I saw The Music Man! Why does he have the most amazing male voice? Him and Julie's friendship really flowed on screen. They had great chemistry. Loved it. Prestons last act in drag is something you don't want to miss. The numerous musical numbers, sets and costumes are unforgettable as well in Victor/ Victoria. Not to mention it combines humor and very real dramatic issues together. I took one point off because the second act sort of slows down a bit, but the positive side is we see the acting talent of Leslie Ann Warren as well.
Murder in the Private Car (1934)
The end is the best
The witty dialogue in this film keeps up the fast pace. The detective played by Charlie Ruggles lights up the screen with his humor and one liners. Theres terror and laughter all rolled up into one in this film. Murder cases on a train are classic and this movie makes all the stops. No pun intended.
It's really the ending that sucks you into the film completely. Watch as the caboose/private car is unlocked and seperated from the train (orchestrated by the murderer) and the train goes completely out of control. The amazing filmography of how this train (full of explosives mind you) narrowly escapes in such a high speed chase is so exciting.
Note: Some of plot seemed off and unnecessary. There are far fetched ideas presented, like one of the female characters being the "long lost daughter of a railroad tycoon?".
Note: There are negative racial depictions presented in this film.
Dune (2021)
A visual masterpiece
I tried watching the 1984 version and found this to be so much more understandable. There are things in this that remind me here and there of Blade Runner, The Fifth Element and Star Wars. It's beautiful, daring and dramatic and I love when films like this take you far into the actual world of the film...not just the main characters but the lives of the surrounding smaller characters and little details of people/locations. I was floored at the costumes....just so creative Also the acting, the air ships, architecture and locations. Can't wait for part 2!
A Rainy Day in New York (2019)
Charming! Great dialogue and acting
Loved watching Timothy Chalamet just kill it in this movie. His acting just shines in this. Almost a combination of Woody Allen himself plus vibes of Nicholas Cage, James Dean and Christian Bale. I love the rainy feel of NY and reference the romanticism of old movies. Jude Law was a great addition as well as Will Rogers as Gatsby's brother. I got a real kick out of the scene with Gatsy's brother and fiance! I notice that Woody Allen likes filming cities in the rain. Same with Midnight in Paris. It just works and creates a complete mood. It's a funny, witty film and honestly I couldn't be happier in spending time out of my day watching this. Would highly recommend!
