Sexy
20 April 2002
In 1994 I saw 'Interview With The Vampire' and decided it was the most sensual and sexy movie I had ever seen, and eagerly awaited the sequel. In the meantime I read the books, and was a little disappointed, though not dettered in the slightest. Tonight my wait was finally over when I saw my long awaited sequel... Despite Tom Cruise's fantasic performance as Lestat in Interview, I think Stuart Townsend did the character justice, while adding something Cruise couldn't have even tried to pull off. It still retains the sensuality of the first film, though in a darker kind of way. The visuals were great, though Interview still stands as the greatest Vampire film of all time, this one runs definitely in the top ten.

Ultraviolence, A bit of the Ol' In-and-Out, Ludwig Van, but no Clockwork Oranges
10 December 2001
I always think of the book of A Clockwork Orange as a 10/10 masterpiece, as original as it is brilliant and terrifyingly beautiful. The movie, for me stands then same bar one seemingly small, yet highly important aspect not included in the film... Nowhere in the film is it explained why Alex is A Clockwork Orange, nor what the bloody hell a Clockwork Orange is. If I hadn't read the book before I saw the film, I would be stupendously confused, putting all of the film's bizarre qualities down to 'oh, it's just Kubrick's style'. To appreciate the full philosophical nuances of A Clockwork Orange, please read the book first. For those who can appreciate it in its fullness, A Clockwork Orange remains one of the gretaest films ever made...Kubrick's cinematography is mezmorizing, and watching it is like being seduced.

Love need not be a catastrophe after all...
28 July 2001
You can read the plot outline a million times; university students Mia and Alice are looking for a flat mate. Michael is looking for a flat. Mia and her girlfriend Danni are breaking up and Ari, though being the "Warren Beatty of the campus", the cool philosopher type with a degree in classics, is discovering a few of the simple things in life. But no matter how many different ways you can hear the plot, it will never come close to describing just how darned good this movie is.

There's no gloss, no glamour, just good Aussie film making, the way it was meant to be.

This is a day in the life story, where enough happens to fill a lifetime in any other person's life. At the end of the day, everyone gets what they deserve, and they all get a little bit closer to that thing we all crave... happiness.

Excellent. 10/10

Amazing
25 July 2001
What prompted me to write this was reading another viewer review that claimed this film was terrible. Now, I am not going to attack that reviewer; everyone is entitled to their own opinion and all that, but I am going to tell you why I disagree with what that person wrote.

Eunice and Miriam are the central characters. Known to each other as Eu and Mi, (You and Me). Eunice feels God has forgotten her, so makes has to punish herself or her sins and crimes. Miriam is a sweet, sensitive girl, a complete opposite to Eu. At opposite ends of whatever the scale might have been, Eu and Mi cross the country so Eu can find the only person she has ever loved...

It is a shocking tale. It is disturbing, depressing. It is, for me more of a tragedy that Hamlet and Macbeth put together and multiplied a hundred times. Love and Redemption. Love. Love. Love. That's what it's all about.

The final scene of any film should be something. I have never cried so hard in a film as I have in this one. Everybody who considers themself a fan of the 'non-Hollywood' style film with heart and guts, then see this incredible film! 10/10

Pulp Fiction (1994)

It's everything.
25 July 2001
When I first saw pulp fiction, I thought it was a kinda cool movie; violent, but in a 'cool' way. Shocking, but in a 'cool' way. I don't know how many times I have seen this film, but I now see it's so much more. It's a rich intertextual film going experience. It's a gangstar movie. For lack of a stronger term, it's a black comedy. It's a renegade boxer story. It's 'Easy Rider', 'Deliverance' and 'Shaft'. It's a film noir, it's a melodrama. It's romance and action. Its narrative flow is not just novel, but near genious. If Tarantino was only allowed to be credited with one film in his amazing career, this would definitely be the one.

Moulin Rouge! (2001)
10/10
I never wanted it to end!!!
24 June 2001
There are as many bad reviews as here are good ones out there for Moulin Rouge, so I had to see it for myself. The previews showed a lot of glitz and a lot of glamour, but no real substance to the plot or characters, so that's pretty much what I expected; a good looking film and not much more. I'm glad to say I was mistaken. Of course, the film is visually dazzling, not just from the sets and costumes but from Baz's nifty trademark directing also. Nicole Kidman, (whom I never really used to like very much) was outstanding, beautiful and in every way stunning, as was Ewan McGreggor, in this gorgeous fairy tale Romantic romance. A story about 'Truth, Beauty, Freedom, and above all Love', Moulin Rouge is, in a word, SPECTACULAR!!
