Casablanca (1942)
Casablanca- Amazing
In a time totally crammed with WWF wrestling, boy groups, Canadians having intercourse with dead moose, and morons in the oval office, its good to know there's a safe haven. No, not a methadone injection, but 1942's classic, CASABLANCA.
The writers ( Julius J. Epstein, Philip C. Epstein, Howard Koch ) must have been struck with a stroke of genius while penning this sensational piece of celluloid. Bogart reaffirms his acting greatness and a terrific supporting crew finishes out the fabulous cast. Michael Curtiz pointed the camera and showed, and continues to show, the world what movies should really be like.
This is a movie.
City Lights (1931)
City Lights- Spectacular
Sometimes movies disastrously complicate themselves with convoluted language and incessant dialogue ( sometimes movie reviewers do it too. ) But Charlie Chaplin, proving he is truly one of the greatest actor/directors ever, shows that linguistic simplicity speaks volumes. With CITY LIGHTS Chaplin has created one of the greatest movies of all-time, using sparse dialogue and constant hilarity.
The boxing scene is one of the best pieces of cinema ever, comedy or not. In those seventy years, since CITY LIGHTS came out, movies have come a long way, but that one scene has not been equaled. The comic genius of Chaplin shines vibrantly in this masterpiece.
