La La Land (2016)
Balance between ambition and love.
"La La Land" masterfully portrays the poignant dilemma faced by Mia and Sebastian as they navigate the intersection of their dreams and their love for each other. Mia and Sebastian are both fiercely dedicated to their respective aspirations. However, their ambitions often clash with the demands of their relationship, leading to moments of tension and conflict. They grapple with the fear of failure and the pressure to compromise their dreams, all while trying to nurture their love for each other.
A deeply moving exploration of the human condition, offering a nuanced portrayal of the delicate balance between ambition and love.
Nimona (2023)
Political but still very much enjoyable
The film deals with the problems of the LGBT community and how its members are seen in society. It's just that it does it in a rather subtle way, even though the main character is clearly a member of this community, the film did not want to hide this at all. A film on which Netflix has made its well-known mark.
But that doesn't mean the movie wasn't great. The way the characters are built, with well-established and determined personalities, is done extremely well. We see the protagonists going from one emotion to another, the hardships they went through and how they develop.
The relationship between the two main characters develops incredibly well and their story takes you from one state to another. The story is well written and even if the action is a bit predictable you are not getting bored through out the film. Funny and heart warming, this film will be loved by kids and adults too.
The animation style is a visual feast, from the whimsical transformations of Nimona to the sprawling landscapes that serve as a backdrop to the characters' adventures.
So if you overlook the subtle political message of this film, you are left with a story that delivers laughter, excitement, and a warm fuzzy feeling that lingers long after the credits roll.
