A Christmas Horror Story (2015)
Nice Little Xmas Anthology!!
This is a well made, well played and worthwhile Xmas horror film IMO. The cast is great and the writing is good and the effects are top notch....plus you have killer zombie elves and Krampus and......SHATNER!!! This is another of the films that spawned during the "Krampus" craze last holiday season. This is one of the better ones. It is set in the same town that the "Ginger Snaps" movie was set in and the stories are all connected somewhat. Shatner plays a DJ who has the Xmas spirit in spades while all around him in his town....well....some crazy stuff is going on.....and meanwhile....at the North Pole?
Krampus (2015)
Actually One Scary Little Ride!!
When this film came out, I ,again, expected an Xmas Horror film. Then I saw the cast and thought "this is going to be a dark comedy" and then I actually watched this movie. What can I say? DAMN!! Do NOT let the little kiddies see this one.....but you SHOULD!! This film was RIGHT ON from moment one!! The story basically follows the folklore fairly closely...and this is actually one fearsome fairy tale people! I enjoyed this movie immensely and plan to watch it again before Xmas is over! I feel the need to tell parents again however....this is NOT "Rudolph" or "Frosty"! While it does definitely fit the mold of Xmas fare....it is a decidedly dark European ghostly tale of supernatural menace and is filled with things that would give most kiddies nightmares for years!! So.....you know it is good!! LOL!! TWO THUMBS UP!!!
You Better Watch Out (1980)
Not Quite Sure What To Make Of This One!
Okay, "Christmas Evil" aka "You Better Watch Out" (which IMO is a better title) is a film I approached expecting something "slasher" in nature. It is not. I would probably describe it as a movie about a man who is losing his mind due to an obsession with Santa and Christmas. And we get to witness this firsthand. This does not make it a bad film. I actually liked it somewhat. The lead character is pathetic. He is a man who was traumatized as a child when he found out that Santa Claus was make believe. As an adult, he is seen living in a kind of Christmas Fantasy world at home and trying to influence others around him to be kinder, etc. He is played by veteran character actor Brandon Maggart who is excellent in the role. You will see a number of familiar faces in this one too. It seems a bit TV movie like and I think this makes it even more interesting. NOT a horror film but a look at a man basically losing his marbles to a Christmas song.
Blood Widow (2014)
OMG!! Are you kidding me?!!
No spoilers could spoil this spoiled mess that is supposed to be a movie! Looks like a film school project! Makes The Blair Witch Project look like an Oscar winner!! The ONLY reason I kept watching this was in hopes of seeing the absolutely smoking hot Danielle Lilley get naked.....and that didn't even happen!! Unless you are having a Absolutely No Good Horrible movie marathon night with friends or are dying for a terrible tease....AVOID THIS STINKER!!! But if you are in the market for something you can play MST3000 on or something to go with say "Plan 9 From Outer Space"....then this is the "movie" for you!! Luckily I got this one for free....and it was about worth what it cost!! Am I over the top or what?
Elysium (2013)
Worth a look if just for the cast!
I rented Elysium not really knowing what to expect. What I watched was ,at least for me, a pretty interesting film. Science fiction. Hard sci fi actually. In the future, due to overpopulation, society has split into two main groups: The "haves"(wealthy elitists) who live healthy lives in the "heaven" that is called "Elysium" and the "have nots" (everyone else living on an Earth that is bursting due to overpopulation) who live lives of drudgery and slavery (and being bullied by androids) in the "Hell" that Earth has become. This "split" reminded me of "Metropolis" in a way. Jodie Foster (in a heavy role for a change) plays the main baddie who wants to keep Elysium free of unwanted people at any cost (including hiring psycho cyborgs and ordering spacecraft blown away). Matt Damon is also surprisingly interesting as "Max" a man who has spent his entire awful life on Earth yearning to go to Elysium. Lots of awesome special effects and action sequences as well. Many of the sequences are set in full daylight, which is very different and actually adds to their effectiveness IMO. My wife watched it three times. She loved it. Worth picking up.
R.I.P.D. (2013)
Not Bad! Not M.I.B. but maybe that's actually a good thing!
I saw this and immediately expected a MIB ripoff! But actually wasn't. Another film made from an edgy comic book series ala Blade, etc. Ryan Reynolds is always likable and for some reason always cast in something that should make some major money but doesn't for some reason( I loved him in this and Green Lantern,in which BTW I thought he made an excellent Hal Jordan). The always great Jeff Bridges is cast as his mentor/partner and brings humor, etc forth in droves (The Dude is getting up there in years though and one can really see it in this film). All in all a good easy choice when at Redbox, etc for a fun two hours at home. The effects are good (lot of CGI but how else can you portray huge overweight monsters bouncing UP buildings...among other things?) and add to the film. Kevin Bacon is cast in this one as well (miscast in my opinion. Who thought of him?). So there are six more degrees.... My opinion? Hell....rent it for laughs! It isn't MIB so don't worry about that! ALSO...loved the idea of the two guys being disguised...Reynold's character appearing as a little old Chinese dude and Bridge's Cowboy looking like a super sexy gal to us living folk...very funny IMO!
The Purge (2013)
Eye Opener At Least For Me!
The Purge was a very good film IMO. Not exactly what you'd expect but engrossing to say the least. One thing about the whole idea of letting society at large have one night to just "do what thou wilt" that bugs me is this : Do you think you can just shut it off after that? Human nature IMO does not operate that way. A "Purge Night" would be somewhat like Pandora's Box and we would never be able to shut the lid again. Ethan Hawke has grown so much since he was that shy boy in "Dead Poet's Society" (remember that?). Lena Headey manages to make you forget her role in "Game Of Thrones" as well. Talented cast. Great story idea. Very scary. Very creepy feeling during the whole thing ( this feeling that someone you know might want to kill you and has one night to do it with impunity). I would recommend this!
