Deadliest Prey (2013)
Adrenaline-fueled homage to legendary "Deadly Prey"
Colonel Hogan(David Campbell)is back after 27 years of rotting in prison and he surely is very very angry. He gets released and immediately seeks out his revenge on Mike Danton(Ted Prior),extremely skilled soldier and total killing machine, the star of "Deadly Prey"(1987).But this time Hogan want to broadcast his revenge over the Internet. The cameras in the woods are filming every moment of carnage as Mike Danton kills dozens of armed soldiers via Rambo-like traps and his deadly weapons."Deadliest Prey" is very watchable and vastly entertaining action/survival flick with plenty of mindless violence.Prior still looks as menacing as ever and Campbell is delightfully over-the-top as the main villain.Three hackers are quite annoying, though.Overall, pretty cool homage to "Deadly Prey".8 severed arms out of 10.
Subtle but slightly unsettling thriller.
A young couple decides to spend their care-free honeymoon in a remote area.Soon they begin to experience some odd occurrences such as one of their two hamsters killing the other one.It seems that someone or something is watching them.Alice becomes unsettled when she discovers that her wedding gown was mysteriously stolen from the back of their car.Slightly surreal and psychedelic thriller with several subtle scenes of dread. It kind of reminded me Australian horror hit "Long Weekend"(1978) with a bit of "Last House on the Left"(1972)thrown in.The acting is surprisingly decent and the finale is wonderfully eerie.Michael J.Pollard's short performance is quite mysterious and evocative. So if you are a fan of Spanish horror/exploitation cinema from 70's and early 80's you can't go wrong with "Morbidness".9 hairpins out of 10.
Il mostro di Firenze (1986)
"The Monster of Florence" by Cesare Ferrario is based on the original book of Mario Spezi "The Monster of Florence"(1983).The film tells the story of accomplished writer, who tries to write the book about elusive serial killer who murders couples having sex in cars/or tents.Il Mostro firsts shoots both victims, then sexually mutilates women post-mortem.In 1986 Camillo Teti directed the second giallo "The Killer Is Still Among Us",which is based on the same criminal mystery.Teti's film is far more graphic and explicit than Ferrario's "The Monster of Florence"."Il Mostro di Firenze" is relatively sleazy, but almost all the killings are off-screen and there is absolutely no sexual violence.Still the opening double murder sequence is quite vicious and is perhaps the most effective in entire film. There is some suspense plus a bit of sleazy sex for anyone interested, but I can recommend "Il Mostro di Firenze" only for undemanding giallo completists.
La muerte incierta (1973)
Jose Ramon Larraz ghost story set in India.
Quite exotic Spanish horror movie we have here.A planter who lives with his son in a remote area of India has an affair with a native girl.On a trip to England he remarries and the native girl commits suicide. On his return he is seized by a superstitious fear and his wife and son become attracted to each other."La Muerte Incierta" is along with "Emma,Puertas Oscuras"(1974)one of the most obscure horror movies made by Jose Ramon Larraz. It's quite boring and unexciting ghost story with a little bit of gore and absolutely no nudity.Still it's nice to see lovely Mary Maude who was extremely memorable as a sadistic schoolgirl in Chicho Ibanez Serrador's "La Residencia"(1969).Plus the scenes of tiger attack are quite gruesome.6 out of 10.
Melancholie der Engel (2009)
"Melancholie der Engel" by Marian Dora lasts over 2 hours of length. It's also one of the most extreme horror movies I have ever seen.I saw this vomit-fest without English subs,so the most of the dialogue went beyond me.Still the plot is fairly simple:two closely-bonded nihilists meet two women at a carnival and eventually bring them back to an abandoned house near the woods. The house which is filled with animal bones and decaying dolls.Other characters are introduced like BDSM woman,an old painter pervert and a wheelchair-bound girl. The orgy of drug use, rape, sexual perversion and animal cruelty begins there...Lots of pseudo-intellectual nonsense is spoken and many animals are killed.Even the cat has its throat slit."Melancholie der Engel" literally oozes decay. There is some of the most revolting gore ever captured on screen along with various scenes of sexual perversion bordering on hard-core porn. This is truly unforgiving and deplorable journey into perversion and death.8 extremities out of 10.
La casa del buon ritorno (1986)
Unusual and disturbing giallo.
A young girl dies under mysterious circumstances whilst playing hide-and-seek with a young boy.Fifteen years later.Luca returns back to mysterious villa where past tragedy occurred. He quickly becomes disturbed whilst staying in this house of memories.Luca sees mysterious lady in black and he becomes obsessed with creepy looking mannequin."The House of Blue Shadows" by Beppe Cino enters giallo territory when mysterious killer appears and begins to stalk Luca's girlfriend...Very rare giallo which was never released on DVD.It's quite unsettling little film with ominous atmosphere of dread. No gore and nudity, but plenty of uncanny atmosphere. The comparisons to "House with the Windows That Laugh"(1976) and "The Perfume of the Lady in Black"(1974)are more than accurate.8 white Onibaba masks out of 10.
I Drink Your Blood (1970)
Cheap and gory trash classic.
A group of satanic hippies called the Sons and Daughters of Sadus after performing some black magic rituals decide to hole up in a small town.It isn't long before residents take notice of the group and their deviant behavior. After hippies beat and humiliate his grandpa a young boy Pete decides to get revenge on the group the best way that he knows by feeding them rabies injected meat pies."Satan was an acid head".Definitely."I Drink Your Blood" by David Durston is one hell of an exploitation classic. The film is filled with cheap gore and crazy scenes of carnage. The script is wonderfully weird and the characters are colorful and gleefully off-beat.So if you are into rabid hippies and construction workers and "Night of the Living Dead" bloody rip-offs "I Drink Your Blood" will certainly leave you speechless.8 hydrophobic killers out of 10.
Dark Heritage (1989)
A group of campers is slaughtered whilst camping in a wooded area.Press reporter Clint Harrison decides to try to find out exactly what happened to those campers who died.He enlists two other men for help and goes to the woods where they reach an abandoned creepy looking mansion.Clint's team begins to die killed by some sort of bizarre creatures. What's going on in this derelict mansion?"Dark Heritage" by independent film-maker David McCormick is a watchable albeit quite slow-moving horror film inspired by short story written by H.P Lovecraft titled "Lurking Fear".The acting is amateurish and the dialogue is often terrible, but the monsters look creepy and the story is cool.6 Lovecrafts out of 10.
Tag: The Assassination Game (1982)
The Assassination Game
A group of students in college are playing a game called TAG:The Assassination Game with plastic dart guns.A college newspaper reporter played by Robert Carradine decides to write the story about TAG after one of the players beautiful Linda Hamilton hides out in his room.Gersh(Bruce Abbot)becomes angry after failing the game,so he starts to use gun with a real bullets and the hunt begins..."Tag:The Assassination Game" was directed by Nick Castle who played Michael Myers in John Carpenter's "Halloween".It's also worth checking out for fantastic actors including Linda Hamilton,Bruce Abbot,Robert Carradine,Xander Berkley,Michael Winslow and Forest Whitaker. The score is excellent, the pace is fast and there is a bit of violence but no gore and nudity.7 deadly dart guns out of 10.
The Devil's Men (1976)
Donald Pleasence vs Peter Cushing = campy satanic horror.
An ancient stone fortification in the land of Minotaur hides the lair of satanists led by creepy local Baron(Peter Cushing).Three young amateur archaeologists Ian,Beth and Tom find a small golden talisman and suddenly disappear.Aging priest(Donald Pleasence)living on the island of Minos must stop evil Baron and his sect of satanists. He enlists New York detective Milo Kaye to help him.Satanic bloody sacrifices in the hidden chamber of Minotaur must end...Pretty tame and surprisingly bloodless satanic horror with fine performances of Cushing and Pleasence. It's kind of similar to "Blind Dead" series but without gore and nudity.Still it's worth checking out for anyone interested in cult 70's horror.7 Minotaurs out of 10.
