The Crush (1993)
Alicia Silverstone shines in this teenage drama
It's very hard to understand why this movie is rated so low. I really enjoyed watching this film, which was Silverstone's first major role. She plays a crazy teenager who has a crush on a guy who lives in a guesthouse. In her selfish pursuit of the object of her affection, she makes the guy's life a living hell. She also makes the life miserable for anyone who tries to "steal" the guy from her. I think Silverstone fit her role perfectly. The plot was very good as well, and I was always wondering what Silversone's character (Alicia) would do next. This movie gets a solid 8 from me.
American Beauty (1999)
A good movie which gives some food for your brain
American Beauty is a movie about a dysfunctional suburban American family. Lester Burnham (husband), tired of his bitchy wife and boring job, falls in love with his daughter's friend Angela, while his daughter falls in love with a boy who moves in next door. So, the story evolves around these two main events, plus some interesting subplots which you need to see to appreciate. The bottom line is that this movie makes you think about the purpose of life and exposes materialism as an evil which destroys American families. Please note that the movie contains female nudity, a sex scene and male masturbation, and is appropriate for mature adults only.
The Whole Nine Yards (2000)
This romantic comedy will definitely satisfy you
Advertised as a funny story about a hitman, The Whole Nine Yards is a romantic comedy with some spice and action (which was so glaringly lacking in "You've Got Mail"). Bruce Willis is superb, Matthew Perry is good, and Duncan is as big and imposing as always. Females in the movie are beautiful, and Henstridge's beauty is simply stunning. I was envious every time Perry would kiss her :) This is a very good "date" movie. Not recommended to those offended by brief nudity, some profanity and "matter-of-fact" homicides. Recommended to everyone who wants to be amused and to see great actors doing a great job.
Pitch Black (2000)
A good movie for those of us who like to be scared
The opening sequence was very good. Lots of action. Then there were many hungry aliens in total darkness, and a group of people tried hard to stay alive. Very good performance by Radha Mitchell (Fry). She's quite cute, so the entire movie I was hoping she wouldn't become someone's dinner. As for Vin Diesel (Riddick), he plays a hardcore criminal who killed many people, but he looks and acts like a teddy bear. Someone you want your daughter to marry. That was a big minus, I think. Also, lots of profanity spoken by small kids. I was sort of offended by that. It wasn't as gross as in Bullworth, but still was absolutely unnecessary. The bottom line: it ain't "Alien," but if you want to see good special effects and get a little scared, and you don't mind mindless profanity, I recommend this movie to you
