8MM (1999)
Definitely not a date movie
I was in a really morbid mood after watching this movie. I pity the fool who takes his girlfriend to see this. With all the graphic, gritty scenes of bondage and bestiality, it was even a little hard for me to keep looking on. But damn it, the script by Andrew Kevin Walker and direction by Joel Shumacher were just too good. So I have to say it was good. Great performance by Nicolas Cage. Perhaps his best since Leaving Las Vegas.
The message of this movie is clear: we don't know who owns or participates in a snuff film. And you can bet that who ever does looks just as normal as the next person.
Event Horizon (1997)
Cool Stuff
Believe it or not, I saw this the very first day in theaters. Scared the heck out of me, the idea that the ship traveled through hell. I think the graphic illustrations of the fated crew members torturing each other really hit that fact home. That and Sam Neill's harrowing performance together made for a really disturbing film.
Faithful (1996)
In a word...terrible
This movie drips with terrible acting by Cher. It is the poster film for terrible movies. Edward Wood was a Stanley Kubrick by comparison to this film. Cher can sing and I enjoyed she and Sonny a lot. But in the acting field, she's just no damn good. Keep her away from a camera. The only film with her that is worth watching is The Witches of Eastwick. And that's only because Jack Nicholson starred.
Avoid at all costs.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
Great Flick!
This movie is one of those you can watch almost any time, anywhere. I loved the script, the acting and the direction. What more can I say? An all around great film. If you haven't seen it and are reading these user comments to determine whether to rent it or not, take my advice, it's worth the rental charge. If you can get your hands on the DVD, listen to the commentary by director Bryan Singer and screenwriter Chris McQuarrie. They point out quite a few flaws and inconsistencies in the film that you probably never would have noticed. Those two together are a bunch of clowns, but you can tell they love their work.
