Avatar (2009)
It's not a movie, it's something else!
After seeing first trailers in cinema few months ago I was skeptical. I love James Cameron very much, his every movie is cult, and I was afraid to expect too much, although seeing the trailers I wasn't sure what to expect. Didn't want to know anything about it but in the end couldn't resist reading some opinions, both from critics and regular folks. When I first read Ebert's review I was encouraged, than after reading more and more reviews my expectations began to build up which I didn't like because of those complaints about the story.
Finally last night I went to see it. Well, all fears just vanished as soon as the movie started. What can one say?! I'm still blown away I'm going to see it again tonight, but in 2D version to see the difference.
Movie is so beautiful, story is so warm and sad, well, it is translation of what is happening here on Earth, fortunately we won't be able to reach other worlds before we destroy ourselves here. OK, story is not complex but why should it be? It is perfect for this movie! Some people always want some crazy twists but they aren't always necessary for movie to be great. It is very well told and you really care for the characters, it moved me to tears several times. But of course, for such cynics and nay sayers no such story is good, they just enjoy bashing, it is in their blood, so don't care too much about that.
From visual stand point movie us just beyond this world, it is Pandora's world! I bow to James for such vision! To conceive this in your head and materialize it on screen is just pure art and he is Picasso of our time! Again and again he manages to create something not yet seen, he is simply the best! This movie really deserves an Oscar, at least dozen of them! I respect all the other amazing movies of the year but Avatar is just something else!
The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
Amazing movie!!
I was lucky to see the movie this afternoon (November fifth) at 3pm in my home city of Zadar, Croatia. We had a world premiere while movie opens tomorrow regularly. To all Matrix fans, that didn't spit on Reloaded, don't worry, movie is AWESOME!!! Through out the movie I was riveted to the seat and movie is full of memorable scenes. Yes, the ending surprised me too, maybe even shocked (NO SPOILERS). Completely different of what I've expected but on the way home I realized that it is most logical one and everything makes sense to me. Why? I would like to explain but I must not to, to not spoil it for you. MAYBE A SPOILER - since everybody knows that Zion battle has to happen I have to say that it is THE BEST battle in any SF - action movie so far, WOW. I left the theater sweaty and had walk for a while to cool down and rethink. Revolutions is amazing, can't wait to go again. I'm sad that everything that has the beginning has the end, especially considering Matrix trilogy.
Rane (1998)
Rane (The Wounds) simply rule !
Srdan Dragojevic does it again! After "We are not Angels" and "Pretty Villages, Pretty Flames" he wrote and directed another masterpiece. This is one of the best gangster movies I saw. What makes it even stronger is the fact that Beograd underworld really looked like that between 1992 and 1997. Someone who isn't familiar with the situation in Serbia during those years of sanctions might think that some things in the movie are exaggerated but they are not. This movie makes fun of everything. From former Yugoslavia to todays Serbia, from Tito to Milosevic and whole situation in Serbia during those years. Actors are great, especially Dusan Pekic (Pinki) and Milan Maric (Svaba). I hope that people across Europe and USA will get a chance to see this movie.
Armageddon (1998)
So bad that I can't think of such bad summary to write !!
The only reason I like that this movie was ever filmed is Trevor Rabins score. And they almost didn't release it. The movie was such a disappointment to me that I can't even describe it. It started so good. Than it all went wrong. Intro scenes are the only good part of the movie. I don't know what Bruckheimer wanted with this movie. Is it a parody, comedy or he wanted to be serious or it is just mix of all stuff ? I think he just wanted it to be a Bruckheimer movie but this time he really crossed the line of good taste. I laughed where I wasn't suppose to and sometimes I was dead serious where I should have laughed because I just couldn't believe how far they are going in absurdity. It is just typical American-Hollywood cowboy stuff bulls****. Story is so shallow. The sad thing is that it made 200 million. I find the subject to be too serious for me to find any fun in this movie. They tried to pull something out with love story and Bruce's sacrifice for us all. It just doesn't work for me and I find "Deep Impact" to be much better (even it isn't so good itself, but clear winner between those two).
Sphere (1998)
Not that bad !!!
In Hollywood they film lot of crap. All those who read the book have been wondering what are they waiting for with Sphere. Fantastic book and best seller. And finally it happened. And than BOOOOM. Disaster. I read and heard all bad reviews. Movie plunged at box office. So I joined the stream and didn't go to theater to see it. That is not what I usually do and I like to be my own critic. Now when it is released on video I decided to take a look. I liked the movie. It isn't really that bad as critics say and it reminds me of Cameron's Abyss. Maybe the reason why I feel that way is because I didn't read the book. I've heard it is so good but somehow I never laid my hands on it which is the first thing I'll do now. I'm really curious to see where the movie went wrong. Probably some books are to good for big screen. There is just no movie that can be better than our imagination. Maybe than I'll change my review but for now I think it is a good movie. Far better than Armageddon, for example, which earned 200 million.
City of Angels (1998)
Beautiful Movie
For me, City of Angels is one of those "surprise movies", when you get more than you expect. It turned out to be one of my favourite 1998 movies. Meg and Nicolas look great together. It seams that Meg Ryan is born for those heart breaking parts. And Nicolas is showing that he is great as an angel as well as he can be an action man. Moving performances from both of them. Very beautiful and touching love story. There is no happy end which makes it even better. Photography is excellent, so many beautiful angles and pictures. Score is fantastic. I like Gabriel Yared more and more. It is a shame that there is no CD score. Those 20 mins on the album pass too quickly. Songs "Angel" and "Iris" are great too. When you put all those things together you get a great movie.
