The series American Rust has been floating around for a while now, but has finally landed at Showtime, which has given the show a straight-to-series order. Now the series is known only as Rust, and has hired on actor Jeff Daniels to star in and executive produce the series based on the Philipp Meyer novel. Variety reports the following description of the series:
“a family drama that will explore the tattered American dream through the eyes of complicated and compromised chief of police Del Harris (Daniels) in a Rust Belt town in southwest Pennsylvania. When the woman he truly loves sees her son accused of murder, Harris is forced to decide what he’s willing to do to protect him.”
Dan Futterman will write and executive produce for the series, which will be a second collaboration for him and Daniels, whom he worked with on the Emmy-nominated Hulu series, The Looming Tower.

In the morning, on the way to his job, Theo stops by a local coffee shop for a cup of the good stuff. When he enters the shop, he wades his way through a dense crowd of listless civilians staring at a small TV screen showing increasingly grim news. Theo stops by a nearby trashcan so he can spike his coffee, but he doesn’t get far — the shop he just left a matter of seconds prior explodes in a cloud of smoke and debris. The audio cuts out and the camera zooms in on the smoke...

One of the more notable aspects of this year’s Sundance Film Festival is the presence of two features from Brazil, Gustavo Pizzi’s “Loveling” and Aly Muritiba‘s “Rust.” It’s great to see more talent coming out of Brazil and making its way through the festival circuit, but unfortunately, this one fails to impress.
Premiering as a part of the World Cinema Dramatic Competition category, Muritiba’s “Rust” is a cautionary tale of teen trauma in the social media age.
