On March 1, Ava DuVernay’s independent film distribution company Array kicked off Women’s History Month the right way: by hosting a 12-hour Twitter take-over that united female filmmakers for a day of awesome, virtual interaction.
More than 30 filmmakers participated in the third “Rebel-a-Thon,” including DuVernay, Amma Asante, Julie Dash, Gina Price-Bythewood, and Mira Nair, with actor Kerry Washington adding her voice in support of the Twitter gathering. Array’s mission is to amplify the voices and visibility of underrepresented filmmakers. Spotlighted during the take-over was the company’s newest acquisition, Egyptian-American director Heidi Saman’s newest film “Namour,” which hits Netflix on March 15.
DuVernay, busy at work on her “A Wrinkle in Time” adaptation, checked in with nothing but positive vibes.

Films focusing on the struggles of everyday life for immigrants living into the United States aren’t a dime-a-dozen, but in this political climate, they are more vital than ever. Namour, by Egyptian-American writer-director Heidi Saman, tells the story of a young Arab-American (Kalim Saleh) who struggles between serving as a valet for a distinguish Los Angeles restaurant and the demands from his immigrant family.
“The recession is what inspired me to write the film,” Saman tells EW. “I was in my 20s when it happened. I myself had the feeling of ‘You’ve just graduated, you’re part of a mobile middle class and you have all these opportunities ahead.’ I felt like the recession took all of that away. I saw friends lose jobs. Some lose their home. And I thought the idea of having all this potential and then it’s taken away was interesting. What do you do with that?...

Philadelphia-based filmmaker Heidi Saman made our 25 New Faces list in 2014 on the basis of two works, one ongoing and one just finished. The ongoing one is her long-running film Tumblr “Four Eyes,” which consists of elegant frome/quote combinations. The just-finished project is her debut feature, Namour, which is being released March 1 by Ava DuVernay’s Array before being available widely through Netflix on March 15. Saman had made a previous short, The Maid, and works as a producer for NPR. From my “25 New Faces” profile: The Tumblr community was among those who supported Saman’s successful Kickstarter earlier […]...

Immigration is a hot topic these days, given controversy surrounding Trump’s Muslim travel ban. But Heidi Saman’s new drama “Namour” aims to showcase a different aspect of the immigrant experience: finding your place as an American. The trailer, which premiered on Entertainment Weekly, follows Steven, the son of Egyptian parents who is coming to terms with his menial valet job at a ritzy L.A. restaurant.
Ava DuVernay’s releasing company Array acquired the film, which is headed to Netflix on March 15. In 2013, Saman and “Namour” were showcased as the IndieWire Project of the Day.

The story of Steven, a young Arab-American valet at a slick L.A. restaurant, caught between his dead-end job and the demands of his immigrant family, Namour references such disparate films as The Graduate and Taxi […]...
