The films will be produced by the duo in conjunction with Tyler Perry Studios in the latest expansion of Perry’s creative partnership at Netflix, inked as a first-look film deal in October 2023 and has broadened to include scripted and unscripted TV projects.
“I’m so excited to be working with DeVon on this and future projects,” said Perry in a statement announcing the partnership. “I think in this polarizing world, and at a time where the world seems to be growing colder everyday, we both share the common goal of wanting to spread some good. March 6 is a special day for Nicole Avant — because she and her mother, the late Jacqueline Avant, share the same birthday.
This year, Nicole Avant spent the occasion working. The former U.S. ambassador, film producer, activist, and now bestselling author of “Think You’ll Be Happy,” sat down for an intimate conversation about mother-daughter relationships as part of Visionary Women’s International Women’s Day summit.
Her friend, Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow, was waiting backstage of the ballroom of the Beverly Wilshire hotel when Avant floated into the private space ahead their fireside chat.
As the two women embraced, Paltrow quietly sang “Happy Birthday to You,” and Avant began to well up with happy tears. She’d been feeling quite sentimental all morning and kicked off the day by turning on her 1976 playlist to find the song “Love Is Alive.”
Why? Her mom used to play that song when...

Netflix is doubling down on its commitment to the ever-busy Tyler Perry.
The streaming service announced Monday that it was adding a multi-year, first-look series deal to its ongoing partnership with Perry. The first series under the new pact is titled Beauty in Black, a 16-episode hour-long drama, written, directed and produced by the man himself. Per Netflix, the project follows two women who lead very different lives — one struggling to make a living after being kicked out by her mother, the other running a successful business — and find themselves entangled in each other’s worlds.
The news comes some four months after Perry revealed his first-look film deal with the service, which has him writing, directing and producing features including the upcoming World War II period film Six Triple Eight, starring Kerry Washington, and legal drama Mea Culpa, fronted by Kelly Rowland. Tyler Perry is expanding his deal with Netflix, adding TV series to the mix. Netflix announced Monday that it had added a multi-year, first-look series pact with Perry to the previous feature film pact he sealed in October with the streamer.
As part of the expanded relationship with Netflix, Perry is developing the 16-episode hour-long drama “Beauty in Black,” which he will write, direct and executive produce. According to Netflix, “‘Beauty in Black’ follows two women leading very different lives. Tyler Perry is adding to his collection of first-look deals.
Perry has struck a first-look series deal with Netflix, adding to his pact with the streamer on movies.
As part of the new arrangement, the streamer has ordered drama series Beauty In Black, the first greenlight under the deal.
This comes on top of Perry’s BET deal for TV, which we understand is ongoing with more than 10 series at the company. In 2017, Perry struck a large, long-term pact with the company then known as Viacom.

For a while, it seemed as though Netflix’s sole focus was to become the first streaming service to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. With the releases of “Maestro,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Power of the Dog,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Marriage Story,” “The Irishman,” “Roma,” “Mudbound,” “Beasts of No Nation,” and others, many in entertainment felt that the streaming service that disrupted the entire industry was trying to backdoor its way into the good graces of Hollywood by releasing prestige pictures in theaters. Then, as the entire movie theater business was still trying to get back on its feet following the Covid-19 pandemic shutdowns, Netflix put “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” into theaters — for an admittedly limited amount of time. However, it appears that the days of the world’s largest streamer making massive efforts to release its films in cinemas might be over.

Netflix kicked off February with news of the streaming service’s 2024 film slate.
The steamer, which landed 18 Oscar nominations this year – including seven for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” – will debut numerous populist films in 2024, including new projects from Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry, Jenifer Lopez, Millie Bobby Brown, Eddie Murphy, and more.
Well-known directors with movies set to premiere on Netflix this year include Tyler Perry (two titles), McG, Richard Linklater, and Lee Daniels. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld will also make his directorial debut with “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story.”

It’s already been a busy 2024 for Netflix. Out is long time film chief Scott Stuber; in are live sports (sort of), a huge Sundance splash, and 18 Oscar nominations, the most of any individual studio. What does the next 11 months have in store? Answer: a hell of a lot.
Netflix on February 1 released a teaser video for its biggest properties arriving in 2024, including more than 50 new movies and 90 new and returning series. The highlight is “Squid Game 2,” the follow-up season to the South Korean dystopian smash hit that became Netflix’s biggest show of all time.
At the end of Netflix’s mega-tease, we see Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and his new bright-red hair walking through an airport when a mysterious voice on his phone tells him, “You’re going to regret the choice you made.”
“I’m going to find you, no matter what it takes,” he says in return.

Almost a full century after the end of World War II, new stories about the quiet heroism of everyday individuals continue to come to light. Now Tyler Perry is tackling the war with his new film Six Triple Eight, the story of the war’s only Women’s Army Corps unit of color. Perry writes and directs in his fifth project, starring Kerry Washington, for Netflix.

Netflix is not going to change up its movie strategy in the wake of the exit of film chairman Scott Stuber, according to co-ceo Ted Sarandos.
Sarandos did not directly address Stuber’s departure, news of which came out Monday. But, asked on the streamer’s fourth-quarter 2023 earnings interview about whether “recent management departures” might signal a shift away from original movies, Sarandos replied, “We do not plan to change our strategy or the mix [of licensed and original films]. It’s always going to be that kind of blend of, first window, second window and deep catalog. We think that formula works best to entertain the world.”
Netflix’s original movies “are attracting some of the biggest audiences in the world,” Sarandos said, adding that Netflix’s original films outperform licensed titles on balance. Netflix extended its lead as the world’s biggest premium video-streaming platform — pulling in a better-than-expected 13.1 million subscribers for the fourth quarter of 2023, a Q4 record. The company’s Q4 revenue came in slightly above Wall Street forecasts, while net income fell short.
As of the end of 2023, Netflix counted 260.28 million total members globally. On average, analysts expected the company to report about 8.8 million net new subs for the year-end quarter.
Netflix shares were up more than 8% in after-hours trading on the subscriber beat.
Revenue in Q4 grew 12% year over year, to $8.83 billion, higher than Netflix’s previous forecast due to favorable foreign exchange rates and “stronger than anticipated membership growth,” the company said. Net income was $938 million, or $2.11 per share. Wall Street expected earnings per share of $2.22 on revenue of $8.71 billion, according to financial data provider Lseg (formerly known as Refinitiv).

Tyler Perry is one of the hardest-working creators in Hollywood, but he already has a vision of how he wants to spend his retirement.
The prolific actor/writer/director, 54, joined Kelly Ripa on her “Let’s Talk About It Off Camera” Sirius Xm podcast and was asked how he wants to spend his later years.
“Do you ever think about retiring and what that looks like for you?” Ripa asked Perry.
“I do, but I think my retirement will be more like Clint Eastwood, you know, so instead of doing 12 movies in four years, I’ll probably be doing one movie in six months or something like that,” Perry responded, referencing the legendary actor/director, who is still working into his 90s.
“Right. One movie in six months. I love that. So, a real slow down,” Ripa replied.
“A real slowdown, yeah, but ideally, I’d love to be on a beach smoking weed.
