Ten years ago, the existence of the extreme right-wing ultra-Catholic sect El Yunque was proven in court. Since then, despite unofficial investigations by the Church and the rejection of Catholic parents who denounced the recruitment of their children, the tentacles of power of this international sect, which operates throughout Latin America and Spain, have not only spread: some of the names of this secret organization now hold public office. But what exactly is El Yunque, and how far does its influence reach? This question is answered in the podcast Dios, Patria, Yunque, a five-episode creation of Podium Podcast that will premiere this Monday, February 26, on all audio platforms.
Dios, patria, Yunque is an original series that reveals unpublished testimonies from former members of the clandestine organization that originated in Mexico and has been operating in Spain for decades, with the aim, according to its own definition, of "imposing the Lordship...

There's no doubt that Netflix is the biggest name in streaming. Though it lost some subscribers in 2022, the company has come out the other side and now boasts around 247 million paid subscribers — almost 50 million more than its closest rival, Prime Video. But the rise of Netflix has come at a cost to us all. That is to say we've been fed a seemingly never ending stream of middling "content," most of which seems to come and go without making any significant impact.
While this cultural nightmare continues unabated, Netflix has been gleefully raising prices, mainly because they signed up everyone they possibly could and now need to squeeze 'em for everything they've got. All of which would be fine — or at least, par for the course in our free market reality — except the streamer insists on taking our subscription fees and funding stuff like "Obliterated."
What's "Obliterated?" It's an action...

It’s the spooky season, and Netflix has returned with a film that is surprisingly linked to 2017’s successful Spanish-language film Veronica. Veronica was a one-off film based on a true story, which didn’t seem to have the potential for something more, but here we have a prequel (take it with a grain of salt) about an interesting character from the film. Sister Death goes back about 60 years before the events of Veronica, where we learn about Sister Narcisa and how she became the infamous blind nun named Sister Death. Brought to us by director Paco Plaza, who also made the 2017 film, Sister Death is set up as a more slow-burn film that will leave you haunted, just like Veronica. It’s become common practice to pick semi-important or interesting characters from horror franchises that are decently successful to expand films into universes. The Conjuring is the biggest example of this.

It’s probably not getting an Oscar nominations anytime soon, but “The Mother” has bested Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” where it counts: Netflix viewership metrics. Jennifer Lopez’s thriller film has entered the streamer’s list of Top 10 most popular English-language films at No. 8, knocking Scorsese’s three-and-a-half hour mobster epic out of the upper echelon.
Netflix announced the news on Tuesday, along with the release of viewership numbers for the week of May 29 to June 4. “The Mother,” which has streamed for four weeks after premiering on Netflix May 12, has now been watched for a total of 229.30 million total hours by Netflix subscribers. That’s enough to place it between “Extraction” (231.340 million hours) and “Purple Hearts” (228.69 million hours) on the all-time list, and bump “The Irishman,” which peaked at 214.57 million hours viewed after its first 28 days on the streamer, from the list.

Netflix has released its weekly chart of how movies and television series have been doing on the streamer, with the Jennifer Lopez action-thriller remaining in #1 over the Top 10 English film chart for the week of May 22, its third week in that position. Read on for this week’s analysis.
Before we get to the movies, it’s quite notable that Arnold Schwarzenegger made his debut on the streamer in a rare live action series called “Fubar,” created by Nick Santora (“Scorpion”), which debuted atop the English TV list with 88.9 million hours viewed, easily the most-viewed series of the week. It entered the Top 10 in 90 countries and was the #1 watched series in the United States, Canada and dozens of other countries across the globe.
It still received some stiff competition from the “All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” spin-off series, “Xo, Kitty,” its first season getting 63.8 million hours viewed last...

Ah, the Netflix Top 10. It's a place that can sometimes deliver hidden gems -- like the Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead mind-bender "Synchronic," currently at #5 on the English films list -- and star-powered stories. The streaming giant's weekly viewership chart has plenty of star power this week, from the Jennifer Lopez flick "The Mother" (#1!) to the Tom Hanks adaptation "A Man Called Otto" (#4).
For every title that feels like a hit, though, there's always an inexplicable chart-topper. This week, it seems to be "Muted," which as of publication time is in second place on the non-English-language TV shows list. According to Netflix, viewers watched 35.1 million hours of the Spanish psychological thriller show last week, which is a shame, because it's, well, really bad. Like pretty much every movie and series that's ever been put to screen, a lot of people surely worked hard on "Muted." Yet, with a 33% Rotten Tomatoes...

In the Netflix original psychological thriller Muted, the character of Ana Dussuel is portrayed as a complex and morally ambiguous psychiatrist. Throughout the series, Ana conducts a covert surveillance operation on Sergio, a recently released convict. Her motivations for doing so stem from her previous working relationship with Sergio’s mother, Blanca, who treated Ana better than her own mother did. This connection sparks Ana’s deep interest in Sergio’s story and the circumstances surrounding his mother’s death. Initially, Ana strongly believes in Sergio’s innocence and views him as a victim of domestic violence. She empathizes with him and becomes convinced that he was wrongly accused and imprisoned. Ana’s conviction of Sergio’s innocence drives her to gather evidence and conduct her own investigation, aiming to unveil the truth and seek justice for him.

As I reflect on the final episode of Muted, only one lingering question arises in my mind: why the series leaves numerous unanswered questions and concludes abruptly without providing a satisfying resolution. In the previous episode, Sergio obtained a lot of information about his sister, including her address and phone number. He texted at the given number, which happened to be Ana’s. Ana, driven by her impulses, unexpectedly arrived at Sergio’s doorstep to lead him to his missing sister, Noa. However, Ana neglected to inform her team of her intentions, leaving them bewildered throughout her time with Sergio. Now, let’s discover if Ana manages to escape Sergio’s clutches and coax him into revealing the truth about what truly occurred that night when he killed his parents.

In the previous episode of Muted, Sergio discovered from his aunt that his sister, Noa, had been adopted by a different family. However, it was revealed that Ana and her husband, Benat, were the ones who had actually adopted Noa. Meanwhile, Cabrera was determined to sabotage Ana’s secret operation, despite the fact that its true purpose remained unclear. Natanael, on the other hand, saw an opportunity to gain publicity by assisting Sergio. However, Sergio saw through Natanael’s intentions and decided to keep his distance from him. Now, with Noa in Ana’s care, the question remains: will she be reunited with her brother? Let’s find out.

In the previous episode of Muted, Sergio was wrongfully arrested after getting involved in a fight with Eneko. However, Natanael came to Sergio’s aid by blackmailing Eneko. Natanael possessed footage of the actual altercation, revealing that Eneko had been the aggressor and had beaten up Sergio. With this evidence, Sergio was able to regain his freedom. After his release, Sergio had a meeting with Marta, and their connection grew stronger. Marta was able to create a space of trust in which Sergio felt comfortable opening up about his mother. He revealed a distressing childhood experience involving his mother, Blanca. Sergio disclosed that his mother used to lock him up and administer medication in an attempt to change his behavior. This traumatic event from his early years may be a significant factor in Sergio’s violent behavior toward his parents and, ultimately, their tragic death.

In the previous episode of Muted, Sergio had just been let out of jail when he ran across Marta, who had developed feelings for him while he was the infamous Balcony Killer. Despite Marta being in a stable relationship with Eneko, Sergio wanted to pursue a romantic connection with her. However, Ana, the leader of the secret operation investigating Sergio, took advantage of Marta’s involvement to gather more information about Sergio’s emotional state. Marta, driven by her strange attraction to Sergio, decided to assist Ana in her investigation. The situation took a dramatic turn when Eneko discovered Marta’s connection with Sergio. Fueled by jealousy and anger, Eneko attacked Sergio in the middle of the night. Fortunately, Mikel, one of the investigators involved in the operation, arrived at the scene and came to aid Sergio. However, their encounter was cut short as the police arrived at the location.

Upon his release, Sergio returned to his home and was seen communicating with his tutor, Pastor Natanael, and even speaking like a regular person with Marta, a young girl who had a crush on him. Meanwhile, a secret operation orchestrated by Anna Dussul was underway during Sergio’s probation. Muted, a new Netflix series that manages to provide the viewers with a shocking twist in the very first episode: despite its misleading title, our protagonist, Sergio, can actually speak! Yep, he talks like a regular person, but only when it suits him and with certain people. This psychological thriller takes us into the twisted world of Sergio, who did something truly awful by throwing his parents off a balcony. As a result, he was locked up in a juvenile detention center, where he conveniently kept his mouth shut for a solid six years. However, after getting out of prison, his newfound freedom coincides with a covert operation orchestrated by the psychiatrist Anna Dussul, who closely monitors Sergio’s every move. The question arises: What could Sergio possibly be capable of that warrants an entire secret operation dedicated to monitoring him? Let’s find that out.
