With sequel “Jason Bourne” leading the way, this weekend’s three new wide studio releases should provide an uptick during this seesaw summer season, which is down from 2015 despite a surge of animated blockbusters, continues to stage a rebound this weekend.
Last weekend saw “Star Trek Beyond” at $59 million pushing Top Ten grosses up significantly from the previous year. Now “Jason Bourne,” which is projected to end up in similar territory, could be joined by two other openers, Stx’s R-rated femme comedy “Bad Moms,” and younger-audience thriller “Nerve” (Lionsgate) combining to gross what last week’s other two openers (“Ice Age: Collision Course” and “Lights Out”) took in (just over $40 million combined). That plus reasonable holdover totals should propel the weekend substantially above the $136 million brought in last year at the same time.
The question is whether “Jason Bourne” will measure up to late July 2015’s “Mission: Impossible—”Rogue Nation,...

A&E Network have begun development of a U.S. series adaptation of the popular French zombie series "The Returned".
Fabrice Gobert ("Lights Out") created the series which is set in a mysterious mountain town and follows a seemingly random collection of people who attempt to regain their homes and lives without realizing that they’ve been dead for years.
Their arrival coincides with a series of gruesome murders which bear resemblance to the work of a serial killer from the past. The eight episode series was inspired by the 2004 film "They Came Back".
A+E Studios and FremantleMedia North America will produce the American version. No writer is yet in place, though there's word that "Bates Motel" showrunner Carlton Cuse is near a deal to serve in a similar capacity on this.
This is not to be confused with a British adaptation in the works from "Shameless" and "State of Play" creator Paul Abbott.

After last year's elegant Gainsbourg from Joan Sfar, France is giving us yet another musical biopic of a vintage pop star. The upcoming Cloclo, about pop singer Claude François, started shooting on Monday, for a planned 2012 release. In the 60s Claude François turned France upside down with his love for glitter, insane outfits and catchy tunes that made him one of the most successful French singers of all time, even after his sudden death in 1978, at the age of 39. Gist: A former student of Eric Rohmer's, helmet Florient Emilio Siri actually started his career shooting glossy music videos for France's finest hip hop artists before turning to action-packed flicks such as The Nest (2002) and Hostages (2005) starring Bruce Willis. Cloclo will be his sixth directorial effort and mark a definite turn in his career. The biopic will follow the kitsch song-writer as he rises to fame against his father's hopes...

Sonic Youth cleaned their closets and dug through hidden, long forgotten, boxes to put together this mix tape for you today. You can feel the weight just looking at it. It's got a couple gems from 1988, demos from "Daydream Nation," some "unknown" licky guitar pieces marked only "1988 Lee demo" (noise guitar hero Lee Ranaldo) and as Pitchfork points out, "the acoustic version of 'Star Power' that they played on the 2009 episode of "Gossip Girl" where Rufus and Lily got married."
Also featured on this nostalgically teasing cassette stream are a couple songs from the French murder mystery,"Simon Werner A Disparu" (Us title "Lights Out") about a group of highschoolers in the suburbs of Paris caught up in the disappearance of a classmate -- with original music by Sonic Youth. Two of the best movies I saw at last year's Cannes Film Festival, The Housemaid and Heartbeats, are shaping up for release in the Us over the next couple of months, and today delivers trailers for both. And the third of the premier troika of movies I caught in 2010 on the Cote d'Azur, Simon Werner a Disparu (also known as Lights Out), is about to launch its Sonic Youth-penned soundtrack.

'Schizophrenia' Curiously Missing From Upcoming Release' One of the highlights of this year's Cannes Film Festival, and a film that has undeservedly been ignored by distributors on this side of the ocean, was Fabrice Gobert's directorial debut "Simon Werner A Disaparu" (aka "Lights Out"). The film is a clever drama masquerading as a murder mystery following a group of teenagers chronicling events leading up to the disappearance of the titular character via flashback. We called the film "an insight to the tenuous and intangible qualities of those late sex-obsessed teenage years" with comparisons drawn to Rian Johnson's "Brick," with both…...

Today's new Indie Trailer Sunday, to mark the return of this fine series, is a trailer for a French flick that (unfortunately) doesn't have any English subtitles. However, because it was one of my favorite films of this year's Cannes and because there's still a lot you can pick up from this trailer (like the visual style and mood and a glimpse at its drama) that I wanted to feature it anyway. Twitch has debuted a trailer for Lights Out, also known as Simon Werner a Disparu... in French, a high school murder mystery noir film kind of like Brick but from France (read my review). Enjoy the music, too, as the film uses quite a bit of New Order in it. Watch the full French trailer for Fabrice Gobert's Lights Out: March 1992, in a small town in the suburbs of Paris. During an alcohol fueled party, teenagers...

Fabrice Gobert's Simon Werner A Disparu has two problems. First, though selected to screen in the Un Certain Regard program at Cannes 2010 it was programmed very late in the festival, in the waning days when many have already left and gone home for a nice, long nap. And so it was largely overlooked. And, second, it is saddled with sadly unimaginative sales agents who decided to ditch Simon Werner Has Disappeared - both accurate and highly evocative - as the international title in favor of the terminally bland and largely meaningless Lights Out. Here's how Cannes described the film:
March 1992 in a small town in the suburbs of Paris.
During an alcohol fuelled party, teenagers discover a body that seems lifeless hidden in the bushes of a forest
Two weeks earlier.
Simon Werner, a senior in the Science curriculum of the Leon Blum high school has not shown up for class.

Ana Girardot Among the huge line-up of young actors starring in Fabrice Gobert's Simon Werner a disparu... (a.k.a: Lights Out) - I think that in a decade from now we'll be more familiar with Ana Girardot. It's not to say that her character of Letizia has more screen time or a larger importance to the multiple Pov narrative, but the redhead is cast as the unattainable girl out of all girls in the high school setting for a reason. Girardot has got an interesting look that I wouldn't cast in a Dardennes' film, but in just about any role where a little bit more than just eye candy is required.

What many critics suspected has turned out to be true: this year's line-up at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival has been disappointing. Many have complained that the films as a whole have been overlong, dark, depressing, and lacking hope. I would tend to agree with most of these criticisms. After a week of searching, I was finally able to find a film that is much more "my speed" than the rest of the selections. Fabrice Gobert's Lights Out is a film set in a suburban French high school during the early 1990's where a student named Simon Werner has disappeared. Did he run away? Was he abducted? Murdered? The movie begins at a drunken house party, where two teenagers go for a walk and discover a dead body in the woods. Is it Simon's body? But the story begins ten days earlier, and we see through the perspective of four...

As I suggested in my last update, the Cannes film festival line-up we announced earlier this month has since changed slightly, with new additions coming quickly after the initial announcement, and the hoped for inclusion of Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life not making it to the party after all. Below is the new- and with only a week or so left until the Festival opens with Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood- presumably the absolute final line-up for this year’s programmes. All titles have been translated into English for ease where they re not obviously translatable.
