Update, 3:16 Pm: Is Les Moonves now, once again, Dan Rather’s boss? Well, a little: Turns out CBS isn’t simply partnering with Axs TV– as the companies framed the arrangement in their announcement today. The network giant has an equity stake in the channel formerly known as HDNet, Moonves told analysts this evening. He didn’t say how much CBS owns of the network which airs Dan Rather Reports or how much it paid, if anything. “Having the power of CBS I’m sure we’ll be able to increase [Axs TV's] affiliate fees, but it won’t be part of our negotiations,” he said. Moonves added that entrepreneur Mark Cuban’s channel will be able to offer “shoulder programming” for live events CBS airs; for example it could have had a show featuring backstage scenes at the Grammy Awards. “It’s a very exciting new prospect for us.” Cuban...

New York -- Former TV news anchor Dan Rather sued CBS Chief Executive Leslie Moonves and former CBS News President Andrew Heyward on Monday in a bid to have them reinstated as defendants in his $70 million lawsuit against the network.
In a lawsuit filed in New York State Supreme Court, Rather accused the two men of fraud relating to his claim that CBS made him a scapegoat in a scandal over a 2004 report on then-President George W. Bush's military record.
"These are the two individuals who committed the crime on behalf of CBS and we're holding them personally responsible," said Rather's lawyer, Martin Gold.
Rather claims CBS breached his contract and its fiduciary duty in part by not giving him enough on-air assignments after he was removed in March 2005 after 24 years as anchor of the "CBS Evening News."

Dan Rather's back in the saddle again.
The former CBS Evening News anchor will be on the air Tuesday night at HDNet for at least two hours of coverage of the North Carolina and Indiana presidential primaries. The coverage, which will partly air in the Dan Rather Reports time slot, will be televised live in front of an audience at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.
Guests include former U.S. Rep. Tony Coelho, D-Calif., political experts Donald Fowler and Peter Hart and media critic Tom Rosenstiel.
It's the fourth such nights of election coverage for Rather, who presided over two decades' worth as the CBS anchor. Without taking anything away from what the broadcast and cable nets do, Rather said that, by circumstance and design, HDNet is doing something different.
"If all we can do is do what the others do, there's no reason to do these programs," Rather said. "We're trying to take the audience inside the political process." So instead of video walls and short bursts of analysis between exit polls and election results, Rather and his team are going to have what he calls a "conversation" about the results and what they mean.

You can find Cuban's pointed account on his blog, where he also accuses O'Reilly of at least indirectly instigating bomb threats against his businesses and of causing his Fallen Patriot Fund's Web site to crash for the first time ever last Thursday (Nov. ...The O'Reilly offensive coincided with Dan Rather telling The New York Daily News that the Dallas Mavericks owner had been "sensationally good to me" during his first year as anchor of Dan Rather Reports on Cuban's HDNet.

NEW YORK - HDNet co-founder, chairman and president Mark Cuban is targeting Oct. 24 for the debut of his network's Dan Rather Reports and January for the launch of a Dennis Rodman makeover show, he said here Thursday morning. During an appearance at Advertising Week, a week-long series of events for Madison Avenue people, Cuban described the newscaster's first gig since he left CBS News last year as a 60 Minutes style high-definition news magazine. Cuban said the Oct. 24 debut is "contingent on everything getting done." Cuban said he was excited about the technological possibilities of the show, which will be supplemented by 64 stringers around the world with high-def cameras. "Dan's working with a completely different palette," said Cuban. "It's so diametrically opposed to anything on TV today."...
