Ten days after declaring war is a lousy time for a party, let alone a Super Bowl.
On Jan. 17, 1991, an armed coalition led by the United States commenced Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf, marking the first major military action of the post-terrorism age. Less than two weeks later, the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills prepared for their own conflict as Super Bowl Xxv kicked off in Tampa, Florida. Fears that Saddam Hussein would target this, the most American of sporting events, led some NFL officials to consider rescheduling. The big game would proceed as planned, but the festive mood of Jan.

40 years ago today, Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams schlemiel-schlamazeled their way into TV history when “Laverne & Shirley” premiered on ABC. Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney, two roommates who worked as bottle-cappers in Milwaukee, had made their debut on “Happy Days” the November before their own spin-off started airing on January 27, 1976. The zany antics of “Laverne & Shirley” quickly shot to No. 1 in the ratings, even surpassing the viewership of “Happy Days.” Williams departed the show after she became pregnant with her first child. As to why she left instead of scheduling around the birth of her baby, Williams has said, “When it came time for me to sign my contract for that season, they had me working on my due date to have my baby. And I said, ‘You know, I can't sign this.’ And it went back and forth and back and forth and it just never got worked out.

Many a singer has tried and failed to re-create the magic that was Whitney Houston's "Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl Xxv. The best most can hope to do is to make it their own — and own it Demi Lovato did, singing the National Anthem to kick off Game 4 of the World Series at Citi Field on Saturday night. Just as she stunned on Saturday Night Live with "Stone Cold," she once again let her vocal acrobatics put on a helluva show. In the end, the Mets might've blown it, but Demi's mic-drop might go down as one of the only moments of this World Series that New Yorkers will want to remember.

The Super Bowl isn't always about football.
It’s also about getting the best musical acts together, and this year is clearly no exception.
It was announced on Friday that Broadway star Idina Menzel and John Legend will be lending their singing chops before the big game on Feb. 1, with Menzel set to sing the national anthem and John Legend to sing "America the Beautiful."

Rumor has it that the Super Bowl is all about the NFL, but the frenzied sharing of 2014's game day ads says otherwise. In the days following the famous scrimmage, it's often the moments that have little to do with football that prompt the most discussion. To find the Super Bowl's best moments off the clock, Logo TV polled over 2,000 viewers on their favorite game day events that didn't involve pigskins or forward passes. The results uncovered strange stunts, touching commercials and an awe-inspiring rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner." Matthew Broderick's Ferris Bueller Commercial (Super Bowl Xlvi, 2012) "I'm Going...

Everyone knows by now that Beyonce's chilling performance of the national anthem at Barack Obama's inauguration was a lip-sync job, and she's facing backlash from fans and self-appointed Twitter comedians over it. But fellow music icons are defending the move, because it was too cold for her to sing it live. But it wasn't too cold for Kelly Clarkson to sing live. Maybe they have different vocal cords. Who knows?
For her part, Beyonce seems to be employing the crisis-aversion technique of 1) ignore, 2) don't respond, and 3) let the story die. While everyone ponders whether Bey will redeem herself by belting live at the Super Bowl, let's revisit some lip-sync scandals of the past, and examine whether this will really hurt Beyonce's career in the long run.

Jennifer Hudson wasn't even planning to attend last February's Grammy Awards.
Instead, she stopped the show with a tribute both sad and celebratory.

It turns out that Charlie Sheen may have been uncharacteristically conservative when it comes to buying himself lavish gifts. Despite reports that he had paid a whopping $230,000 for Lawrence Taylor's Super Bowl ring, Sheen says there's no truth to the story.
"As much as I would be honored to own such an important artifact, I had nothing to do with the acquisition," sheen tells Espn's Dan Patrick.
The ring, which Taylor got after the Giants beat the Bills in Super Bowl Xxv, was sold at auction for the exorbitant price, but the buyer remains a mystery.
As we previously reported, Sheen is a known buyer of high-price sports memorabilia. He owns Babe Ruth's 1927 World Series ring.

Charlie Sheen has spent his cash on a lot of interesting things in his day. But this latest item, if true, could be among the strangest. Sheen apparently purchased Lawrence Taylor's Super Bowl Xxv ring for $230,000 when it went up for auction last week.
Fox Sports Jay Glazer is reporting that Taylor and his agent Mark Lepselter were told on Wednesday (May 23) that the winning bidder for the jewelry was Sheen. Neither Sheen nor Scp Auctions have commented on the matter.
If Sheen turns out to be the buyer, it wouldn't be the first time the star of the upcoming FX series "Anger Management" has collected high-end sports memorabilia. Sheen has previously purchased Babe Ruth's 1927 World Series ring as well as the contract showing Ruth's infamous sale from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees. When Whitney Houston is eulogized and laid to rest on Saturday in New Jersey, it will complete the circle of her personal and professional lives in more ways than one. Houston, who died at age 48 last Saturday in a Beverly Hills hotel room of as-yet-undetermined causes, grew up in New Jersey and cut her teeth singing at Newark, New Jersey's New Hope Baptist church.
It is there that her family and friends will gather to remember a favorite daughter who burst onto the global music scene in the mid-1980s, never forgetting where she came from. Houston was the third and youngest child born, on August 9, 1963, to gospel great Cissy Houston and her late husband John, an entertainment executive and former Army serviceman.

It was Saturday afternoon, and I was late. Behind the wheel of my Mercury Milan, stuck in traffic with two friends in the backseat Driving Miss Daisy style, I tried my best to dodge and weave cars while heading over to pick up one last gal before driving south for an hour to have dinner. Not just anywhere, but a magical place I had never before been to, a place where the word “silverware” wasn’t invented yet and where most of the waiters had ponytails that rivaled my own in both silkiness and length. That’s right: We were going to Medieval Times. We were dressed up! Real dressed. (For Medieval Times standards, where, judging by the garb of the other diners, told me that medieval folk wore a lot of denim shorts and pool shoes.) And I had the drive all planned out: A little Sirius Satellite Radio...

The Super Bowl, by definition, is not meant to be subtle, but the NFL’s mission to wrap itself in the American flag crossed into new territory yesterday. I’ve grown accustomed to a generous helping of patriotism at major sporting events, especially the World Series and the Daytona 500, but the Super Bowl has no peer. Ever since Super Bowl Xxv, the Whitney Houston Super Bowl held during the first Gulf War, the game has been repackaged as a celebration of American strength and values.

Friday (Nov. 19) is the 20th anniversary of Milli Vanilli giving back the best new artist Grammy they won in 1990 because, well, they didn't earn it.
Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus were sold as the singers in Milli Vanilli, but as they started to break big in the United States in 1989, allegations surfaced that they weren't the ones who actually sang on their debut album. That didn't stop Grammy voters from giving them the best new artist award in 1990, but in November 1990 Milli Vanilli mastermind Frank Farian admitted that other singers had provided the vocals for "Girl You Know It's True," "Blame It on the Rain" and other Milli Vanilli hits.

At Sunday's Super Bowl Xliii in Tampa, Jennifer Hudson made her big return to the stage with a rousing rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner".
