Mexico’s famed “Tres Amigos” have made a name for themselves in Hollywood and beyond, directing their way to a bevy of Oscars. Less well known: the emerging wave of female auteurs from Mexico.
The directors range from Patricia Riggen and Issa Lopez, both busy with Hollywood projects and gaining their own international recognition, to women from indigenous communities, such as María Sojob, a Tzotzil native, and Elizabeth Piña, of Otomí Hñätho descent. The latter two are making their first documentaries. Also part of this wave: Tatiana Huezo and Variety director to watch Alejandra Marquez Abella.
“It’s just marvelous what’s happening now; there are more female directors in features, and even more making short films,” says Maria Novaro, freshly installed head of Mexican Film Institute (Imcine) and who fought against chauvinism early in her directing career. She is best-known for 1991’s uplifting dance drama “Danzon.”

Endemol Shine Boomdog, a division of Endemol Shine North America, has tapped seasoned Mexican film and TV producer Leo Zimbron to head its new scripted unit.
Zimbron’s credits in both fields include Netflix’s first original production in Mexico, the hit soccer-themed comedy series “Club de Cuervos,” now on its fourth season.
Formed last year through the merger of Endemol Shine Latino and Mexico City-based Boomdog, Endemol Shine Boomdog (Esb) has been ramping up its production of both scripted and non-scripted content for the U.S. Hispanic and Mexican TV markets.

The Tribeca Film Festival have announced the juries for each category of competition. A host of actors, directors and journalists have been selected that include Evan Rachel Wood, Paul Haggis, Josh Radnor, Eva Longoria and Bryce Dallas Howard.

The Tribeca Film Festival announced today that it has selected 42 jurors for this year’s festival. The jurors include members of the filmmaking community — including Bryce Dallas Howard, Whoopi Goldberg, Paul Haggis, Taraji P. Henson, Kenneth Lonergan, Eva Longoria, Josh Radnor, and Evan Rachel Wood — as well as policy makers and entertainment business leaders.

Maya Entertainment acquired U.S. theatrical and home entertainment rights to the Spanish-language comedy from Mexico , “Casi Divas.” The film is written and directed by Issa Lopez (“Ladies’ Night”, “Efectos Secundarios,” “Ninas Mal”) and scored by Academy Award®-winning composer Hans Zimmer. Director Issa Lopez (Efectos Secundarios) will helm Casi Divas (Road to Fame) for Columbia Pictures Producciones Mexico, the local production arm of Sony Pictures Entertainment. The film, which stars Patricia Llaca, Julio Bracho, Maya Zapata, Ana Layevska, Diana Garcia and Daniela Schmidt, will be produced by Luz Maria Rojas (Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Mask of Zorro). Divas, which is based on an idea and story by SPRI executive vp creative advertising Ignacio Darnaude, marks the fledgling production division's second feature. The first was the acquisition El Crimen Del Padre Amaro, which became the biggest Mexican film of all time.
